Alexander Michael Where did you get that information? I’m not trying to sound rude but if that were true, pumping water from the ground would be just as bad. But that’s not the case. Calcium carbonate neutralizes acid. Calcium carbonate doesn’t come out of a scientist lab, it comes from natural sediments found in stone, fossils, limestone etc. this type of system works perfect for balancing the ph levels of the water. We have been using a two large concrete cistern system with essentially the same materials since 1993. Our public health inspector claims our water is cleaner than city water

I had a aquaculture business in Florida growing salt water LiveRock. Corals, pink coralline algae etc... each rock had over 500 species of life on it. We built reefs out of a100% calcium carbonate rock in the Atlantic Ocean & the Gulf of Mexico. We used a lot of charcoal in our filtration system of about 3,000 gallons. We use to recycle the charcoal by cooking it on cookie sheets in the oven at a preset heat and time. It was then sterile again for reuse. We hardly ever added new charcoal except over time from what spilled or turned to dust. We did this at least a dozen times and never replaced it with new. We kept extra charcoal only to replace very small amount lost charcoal from handling. It never went bad. Don’t remember the temperature or time length of heated oven. But I’m sure you can google it. Hope this may help. Great video, and love & compassion for human life. If everyone that watched this did something to make two other people’s life better, and those two did two more and so on..???? “What a Wonderful World it would be”. Right..??? just saying? Love the design, and the step by step assembly of the system. My only reservation for this setup was the centre tube for free movement of the set floated valve. It felt like an unintended bypass for the water which could reduce the filters effectiveness (Though I guess the reduced effectiveness would be minimal). I saw your concrete design which did address this issue with a separate float area from the filter. Maybe a larger diameter pipe for the float to sit inside and the top of the pipe could reach above the water line to simulate it's concrete counterparts method. Other than that I want to make one. Does rain water also need to be filtered this way? Isn't rain water already "clean"?
Your playing a game with your long term health.
@@synchr0nic0 Rubbish, you cannot filter Acid, one needs specialist equipment from a lab.
Hi Jon! We found this video several months ago and built the water filter based on your instruction to solve our clean water issue in our small town in Bolivia. We also made a video about it! Just wanted to say THANK YOU! To you and Josh Kearn. Amazing work. Life changing. Keep up the wonderful videos.
did you get it going? Did it work? I'm just struggling to write down all the parts- What the heck is "pea gravel"? Sigh. Hope it works at your place!!
@@timisaac8121 we did get it working but are doing some upgrades including putting coiled copper wire and looking to put a uv light in the top of the last tank. We will post up any additional learnings. Pea gravel is pea sized stones. We also removed the mesh from the top of the third tank as there was an accumulation of algae there. Probably caused by some organic matter (grass) in the charcoal. We scooped out any charcoal that floated

Great video, and love & compassion for human life. this is great little over engineered from others i have seen on youtube . but thats awesome cause it cleans the water better . and i agree with you brad but what i would really like to see is this kind of thinking along the river ways that are already dammed up . sure it would cost a little bit and there would be three or four levels of dam walls but the out come would be cleaner water at a very great level . cleaner streams and water ways . humans destroyed our water ways with sewage and toxic waste its up to us to clean up our mess . the only way that will happen is stricter laws against water waste and mass water filtration plants . it would be alot easier then trying to send people to mars for god sake .

Distillation is the only way 100% to have pure water and you are Never Guessing. Your Gonna say, well true but that takes a lot of Power as in this example; 1200 watts for 24 hours is 21 Liters. So that is 28.8 KW @0 .14 = 4.04 CAD Since science is so full of holes nobody can solve the simplest problem. Example : 100 watts for 24 hours is 38 Liters and a total of 4.4 KW @0.14 = 0.61 CAD or A Wind Up Clock, A Hand Pump and a Sealed Container 0 watts for 24 hours is 23 liters costing you a slice of bread for Energy. Question: how does it filters/eliminates bacteria, virus, protozoa, chemicals? If it can't filter/eliminate the ones above, can we consider it safe or practical?
Frank Smith if you watched the video properly, Professor John Kern developed this “primitive” system for his graduate thesis. He spent years testing it in various labs including Bangkok and Colorado. He essentially developed and improved this system in university. He needed post “college” education to do this properly and efficiently. And by the way, quoted words are the ones you misspelled in your comment. You’re welcome.
This kind of filter is very similar to the kinds of filters used for aquariums. The basic principles are the same, it's only the materials that vary slightly. For anyone trying to replicate this, I recommend looking into what's being done in the aquarium hobby to get some inspiration
Exactly. I have many aquariums. And I'm thinking it's the same principles. Pretty cool.

Clean and edible water is a big business. By doing your method I'm sure the big company will close down. We are been fools by them by buying their product in order for them to survive and be rich... Thanks a million to you by sharing this value knowledge...
it's always great that knowledge like this is shared, but the rest of you statement is really naive - 1. not all people could make this 2. not all places have frequent rainfall 3. rain is seasonal 4. not all people could maintain systems like this 5. business will just turn into selling drums/pipes
Faruk, what is wrong with providing a service or product people want, like bottled drinking water? If they don't want to buy it they can make it themselves. Nobody forces anybody to buy bottled water. But many, many people are too lazy to learn a method like this and construct a water purification system on their own. So they prefer to buy bottled water. Does that make the companies providing the bottled water evil?

Love the design, and the step by step assembly of the system. My only reservation for this setup was the centre tube for free movement of the set floated valve. It felt like an unintended bypass for the water which could reduce the filters effectiveness (Though I guess the reduced effectiveness would be minimal). I saw your concrete design which did address this issue with a separate float area from the filter. Maybe a larger diameter pipe for the float to sit inside and the top of the pipe could reach above the water line to simulate it's concrete counterparts method. Other than that I want to make one. Can just see my wife rolling her eye's at me.
Thank you, your video was most informative, very well done.
Did you build one
Great job and ready to build mine here in the Philippines!
Can't thank you enough. Digging my bore at my yard and was wondering how to clean water. Thank you again
I had this question and he answered it at the end. “Is there a limit to how long you used this method does it need some type of cleaning because if the water is being cleaned then the stuff(dirt or the stuff that has been gotten out the water) left behind goes to get rid of it. “ great explanation
Good demonstration. Thank you for the information. Such an intelligent man.
