This padlock looks truly amazing and unusual. My goal was to restore and preserve it, although some parts are completely destroyed by the rust. I tried to keep most of it original. And it also works!
I found this old padlock in the forest while metal detecting. The house site is about 150-200 years old, so that's about the age of this lock. There's a video of me finding it on my other channel: • SILVER on the WW2 posi...

  • In my opinion, the ideal solution would be to put a rusty object in hydrochloric acid. He will etch the rust. And restoring old metal objects is an art. Regards ☺

    • @@soul_iron_restoration I'm just giving you a hint. The acid perfectly etches the rust, and the metal may not be in its natural color, from the so-called patina. However, it is etched with rust. I greet and wish you further success in bringing old items back to life.

  • Замок, собранный на клей, продержится до первого рывка.. Или может лопнуть на морозе. Трудозатраты большие, а результат сомнительный.

  • Looking at the 3 lugs, I imagine they slid onto a fixed 3 pin chest or box before locking it into place, as extra security. Just a guess.

  • Fill in surface irregularities with tin. Then you can file and polish it with a finish like steel. And to finiched: WHERE´S THE KYE !!!!!

    @paulaobs@paulaobs Жыл бұрын
    • Tin is a good idea, I have thought of it. The only problem is that tin oxidizes and the color becomes different from the iron. I would have had to paint the lock.

      @soul_iron_restoration@soul_iron_restoration Жыл бұрын
    • @@soul_iron_restoration Iron cathode. The anode (negative electrical connection) is attached to whatever you are removing the rust from. The cathode (positive electrical connection) is attached to your sacrificial conductor (most likely iron, perhaps some rebar or similar). The current travels from negative to positive.

  • If you had brazed with, for example, brass, the lock would have become stronger. Now just hold a burning cigarette lighter under it and it will fall apart.

    @ako456@ako456 Жыл бұрын
    • Yes, I agree. My goal was mainly to make it look good, suitable for exposition. As it would have looked back when it was used. Brazing is surely the best method but also quite difficult in this case.
