Neil deGrasse Tyson & Matt O’Dowd Discuss Their Favorite Scientific Discoveries
Is space infinitely stretchable? Neil deGrasse Tyson and comedian Chuck Nice explore fan grab bag questions about supermassive black holes, Planck lengths, and the gravitational wave background with extragalactic astrophysicist and host of PBS Space Time, Matt O’Dowd.
Neil and Matt compare notes on science communicating on the internet. Learn why Neil would choose death by black hole and how falling into a supermassive black hole would be different from falling into a regular one. Could you communicate what happens on the inside?
Learn about the discovery of gravitational lenses, quasars, The Einstein Cross, and whether dark energy is changing over time. Will we find out what dark energy is in our lifetime? Could we zoom in on matter indefinitely? Is there such a thing as the smallest particle? We break down a Planck length, cosmological inflation, and whether space is infinitely stretchy. What happens to all the gravitational waves? Discover the gravitational wave background, how to find it, and what it could tell us about the universe.
Is there a correlation between the space compressed by black holes and the rate of expansion? We also discuss the mystery of the early universe uncovered by JWST. How do supermassive black holes form? Do we have any black hole clusters? Learn how NuSTAR will help us track the movements of black holes. Plus, does every object have an event horizon?

Regular viewer of PBS SpaceTime. Essential viewing for science-lovers.
Matt O'Dowd has slowly been onboarding a generation and a half in proper astrophysics for the last 5+ years and now that he's got the foundation built and is talking about the stuff he actually loves and studies personally you can tell that this was always the plan. I am incredibly impressed when I look back on it all. I'm a trained engineer, so I have some of "the math" on lock, and it's like being taught to turn my math into literal magic spells.
Ditto. Have been for a long while now. :)
Came for this exact comment. Was not disappointed 😲
Following that channel for the past 3 years. It's absolutely gold
@@ANunes06 I enjoy PBS spacetime, but it sometimes gets too technical for me. That's what makes it unique though. It goes into a LOT of detail, which you don't often see in pop science channels.

I asked Dr. Tyson a question by email many years ago. Long before KZhead was a thing like it is today. He forwarded my question to another person who answered it. A well qualified person. I was surprised that I got an answer at all, but he made sure that I did.
Cool story bro.
What's his email?

Had to re-watch that segment due to the significance - great for pub talks - everything has it's own event horizon, even you, Steve!
And aren't we now caught in Neil's event horizon? LOL
i LOVE Matt's face as Neil is describing how he would communicate while falling into a black hole. I've made that face countless times while undergoing an enormous internal struggle about whether to correct someone or be polite
Out of all that? That's what you loved?
As a fan of Neil I gotta admit he can be cringe sometimes especially when he sounds so confident in something he's completely wrong about😅
@@barobaro1True academics be that way
My dude could change his occupation to Shaolin Monk with the chill he was able to maintain during the whole podcast. On top of that he's insanely good at visualizing practically incomprehensible principals and even make Neil understand them little better.

PBS Spacetime with Matt. That's where the live ongoing story of physics, is. There was an era, It was either PBS Spacetime or PDFs in my spare time.
No seriously, if I wasn’t doing my work in grad school i was either learning from Neil and Chuck or Matt.

Chuck is a perfect companion for Neil 👍🏻
Ugh. I find him thoroughly vapid.
Agrees perfect and I think he should be given an honorary PhD at this point. He has accumulated enough knowledge and information during this show he has earned an Honorary PhD - so which institution is going to hand them out one I guess the City University of New York perhaps?
I'm trying to sound the intelligence is that like a $200 word that's what I call those words because it's probably what you spent to learn it in your United States or wherever you go education system where you actually have to pay to go to university where is here where I live you you get to go to university for free as long as you make the greats. My University education is primarily from the United States so I had to pay but I've also taking classes now here which were free so I'm not sure I had some scholarships so I didn't have to pay so much money so I don't know...Vapid?!? I think he's really cool actually and he's super nice and he's learned an enormous amount since he started and it really shows that anyone can learn and master very complex astrophysics for example. You don't have to go to university in order to accumulate the knowledge that he has over the time that he's been co-hosting this show and I think it's a real interesting to watch his Evolution and his own ability to think abstractly at that high level.
@@MrJungle123don't watch. It's simple. I don't care for him either way but at least I don't think everyone needs to hear my opinion.
@@bentucker2301 I don't watch. I was fooled into a false sense of security by the thumb nail but had to turn it off about 20 seconds in, obviously - it's quite simple. Don't be mistaken by Chuck's persona. He is an incredibly wise and smart brain who surely would be able to discuss and teach most edge science matters. Add that fast ability to create gags about every situation. Kudos to you, Sir.
100% . I noticed this a while back. He def plays up a character who doesn’t know much but he is extremely smart but plays his,”role” as the everyday guy. Agreed he is VERY SMART
Neil’s best quality is his enthusiasm and joy of the science.
Niel’s statement about avoiding the galactic center is even better when you remember that it’s referred to as the “zone of avoidance” by astronomers. This was a great episode and the explanation of direct collapse black holes was enlightening.
We elderly viewers may also be living on a shoestring and not joining anyones patrion, but you serve a huge purpose for us in helping us keep our brain cells in working order. Watching Dr. Tyson talk about how falling into a black hole is at the top of his 'ways to die' list was a lot of fun, and how, when you're torn in half, you'd still be alive (apparently a good thing), and the other guys nodding politely. Way to sell it Neil! I watch a lot of Matt's show and was thrilled to see you all together having fun. Great hang!

Funny thing... I actually understand Matt O'Dowd here in his conversational style far more than I do when watching an episode of PBS Spacetime, wherein sometimes the concepts are so dense and time so short, that its very hard to follow. No issues here though. I find that pretty interesting.
This was a good episode, I haven't watched in a while but I found the time to watch this one and it was good
I loved PBS Spacetime as well and i was listening to it a few years ago, but it was kinda too complicated for me in a way especially as someone whose English isn't his first language so nowadays i rely on books more, but nonetheless they do a great job at teaching.

Glad I spotted this. I always wondered if Matt O'Dowd was just a hired presenter for PBS Spacetime, much like so many video topic presenters have been over the history of KZhead, and also wondered if he actually understood the deep, complex, and interwoven topics he was presenting. Never really tried to research that question though, but this video proves that he in fact does. Which I find pretty cool.
The question about gravitational waves possibly being connected to dark energy in some way, really got me thinking.
I love the discovery of Pluto. I feel like it was very ironic. While being widely controversial. It redefined our definition of a planet and lead to many more discoveries. Most of all it deemed our 8 planets unique from dwarf planets. A great sacrifice.
Poor Pluto has been in therapy ever since.
Chuck calling out Dexter and Abby was priceless 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
This was a great one! Well done all around.
My theory on dark energy: Our universe is a black hole in another universe, its gravity is drawing in time and space (much like blackholes draw in matter) from the outside universe, and at an ever increasing rate (more mass, the faster it collects). Dark energy is simply our universe collecting the outside universe's time and space, which causes our bubble/universe to expand.
Sounds like a legit theory to me, thought provoking for sure.
So, we're the result of a white-hole spewing post spaghettification.
Not a new idea, part of the reason for all the research around Black holes. Also part of the idea of the multi-verse. Since the laws break down, we don't really know what applies. So, this very much could be the case until proven it isn't. Love the human imagination.
@@user-he1yb7pl1w I appreciate it's not a new idea, but what disproves it?
The great thing about multiverse/exoverse theories is that they depend on stuff that's outside the universe, our capital-U Universe, which contains literally everything that is observable - so you never need worry about someone disproving it.
The sad part about learning so much from you, Neil, is that my growing knowledge makes much of the world seem increasingly dumb.
Maybe it's not that the world is getting dumber, but rather your expanding understanding of the cosmos is highlighting the vastness of what we as intelligent species have yet to learn, not just the whole universe but within ourselves too.
Search the right people around you, and focus on that and science and nature and you''ll be fine.
You discovered the impetus for the anti-science folks. It’s hard to fool people who think critically
The more you know, the more you can see what you have yet to learn about... or The bigger your horizon of known knowledge gets, the bigger the frontier you'll be aware of not having crossed yet will become... The dunning kruger effect
Me too
