Must Watch Before Buying Wheels - Getting The Wheel Size Right
In this video I am going to go over everything you need to know and consider before buying new wheels, especially in regards to performance. I will go over how the rotational weight of your wheel is important, I will explain what is unsprung weight and how it effects handling and acceleration, we will go over how to size new wheels when it comes to wheel width, what is wheel offset and also what is positive and negative scrub radius and how it effects your performance and lastly what should the diameter of your new wheel and tire combo be when compared to stock and how a low profile tire might effect your driving experience and handling as well.

Feel like I’m in a class with the best professor in school; got me wanting to take notes haha keep up the good work man!
Agreed!!!
FINALLY. A good explanation on wheel offset.
When you brought the Engineer in @6:45 I knew this was a verified broadcast ;-) Jokes aside, this was a quick & simple explanation that makes the details easy for everyone.
Ratchets, you're getting in the way of the dog's video Great info
Just want to say thanks for this video you explained it very well and made it so much easier to understand otherwise people don’t take into account what are you really doing when you want to change your tire set up on your car so again thank you and keep them coming
I saw a late-model Charger on 26" wheels. It was especially hazardous because it made laugh so hard that I almost ran off the road!
I always laugh at those. Was the bottom corners of the fenders all bent and curled in? That's what I usually see on them.
@@MrTheHillfolk I don't know because I was also partially blinded by laughter tears!
@@iotaeta-pi2770 😮🤣
Hate seeing this the fact there’s a documentary on vice on street racing with donks I’m like omg....
Good Information... one other thing worth mentioning regarding overall tire height. Not maintaining exact height will affect electronics such as your speedometer, gas mileage and range functions
Changed from 15 in. steel rims to 15in. aluminum on my 2000 cherokee. Dramatic performance increase in all areas. Great explanation
Very informative video. I learned a lot of stuff that I never considered. Thanks.
Excellent video! I never knew tire size played such a huge role in performance. I guess that explains the loss of 3 mpg (approx) since I purchased all new tires for my SUV that were slightly larger. Thank you for an in-depth explanation!
How "slightly" larger???? Did you increase them 1 inch, 2?????
You lost 3mpg in the city but you gained 3mpg on the highway
Great video! I will recommend this video to all my customers looking for "high-flotation" off-road tires.
I was about to get a set of 18” wheels. Thanks for the great video and advice
Great video, as always! 7:03 expected some love for the doggo 😅
Hope you are doing good brother. This pandemic thing is crazy! Stay strong and Healthy man. Great videos.
Excellent explanation. Thank you.
I love your videos, really informative. I watch ones that aren't even relevant to me because I always learn something :-)
Great video, very informative. Thanks! If you changing the wheels make sure you put a genuine one that fits other trim levels of the same make and model or if you about aftermarket just to be within the same specs as oem
Very professional and practical, thanks, much better than Scotty 😉
Very professional I agree but not a fair comparison with Scotty
He's different than Scotty but equally as entertaining and educational
I never thought of the scrub radius. That must be why every homey I see who stuffed some 26s on his car is never going over 25 mph. Probably can't control the dang thing above that speed.
Yeah, scrub radius is new to me too. This is good stuff.
They're just a bunch of scrubs.
Cuz them broke mfs didn’t upgrade their suspension
KZhead Donks Racing. That'll change your mind
There's a yeah but there though. The effects of negative offset are negated by negative camber and REASONABLE negative camber is good for handling.
I've been watching your channel for a while, and had to subscribe. Thank you! BTW... Happy Holidays! 🎄🎇🎆
I always learn important stuff about my truck watching your videos. Stuff my mechanics should be catching, WTH!
Thanks for explaining that final part about low profile tires getting damaged easier that's what I been going thru dented wheels
There’s less sidewall of the tire means it’s not as strong hitting bumps I hate low profile tires they look nice but don’t hold up
Great info, and the Supervisor showing up was awesome. (Nice Dog)
Youre the man! Always come to rachets and wrenches for knowledge, young tech here
Excellent video. Now I'm pretty sure l can upsize my 20"×8" wheels to 20"×9" wheels. Same 245/50R20 tire size and same +53-57mm offset. Thanks for your very detailed explanation.
Very useful video as always. Thanks
This is a great video. I especially loved when you mentioned the car engineers scrubbing off.
You make very good videos. I know aabout many things you talk about but i usually learn a new technique, new product whatever main thing is even though i know most of these things i always walk away learning some things
An incredible complicated subject. Covered fairly well for introduction to aftermarket rims. Center bore also important.
Just remember the bigger number is the width the next number is hight and the R followed by a number is the rim size
Great video! Very informative! Thank you very much!
Might I suggest a separate channel for the comedy and social commentary. So great to see you back with regular content. You break it down so that even a novice can follow along and learn, but you don't dumb it down. You strike a nice balance.
Thanks for posting informative
Your Audi is looking good there Sir. 👍 Great vid as usual.
Very nice video. Really informative!
Very nice and detailed explanation bro. You are Excellent Mechanic.
I forget to hit LIKE, so I reopened the tab and boom ! LIKED.
You're an awesome teacher.
Good insight I have now. thank you sir
Congratulations you have one new subscriber 😎
Great video, thanks!
Great video! You really got to the meat of the situation. Have you worked in the tire industry, besides being a mechanic?
well explained 💯
Also size of calipers especially brembos on subie stis. Happy holidays to you and familia.
Awesome video thanks!
Excellent info Thanks
great vid - i understood the maff
Very well said. I have a Toyota Highlander that I bought used, the previous owner put these ugly chrome rims on. I found a pair of OEM rims at a Toyota/Honda junk yard, and performance is a lot better, it does better on gas, handling is so much better, it’s just been a win/win all around. The after market rims were even the same size and still. If you don’t like the stock rims on your car know what you’re doing before you change them.
thanks 👏
Very informative
Nice work
Thanks for this easy to understand wheels/suspension system info and explanation. This is helpful when I am ready to order my 20” wheel/tire package for my 18’ BMW 540i xDrive!
As long as the roads u drive are good/smooth.
good explanation for those that put spacers, big rims, and anything else makes car fast in their brains
Informative.
Good info!
very good explanation
My cars wheel numbers are 205 , 65 , R15 but in the winter time I go 205 , 70 , R15 it’s a little more of a taller tire gives my car some lift clearance it helps in winter when there’s lots of snow on the ground. The tire just fits in the wheel well so 70 on the hight is about max
Been trying to figure out why my 04 Pontiac vibe is so loud and bumpy. I feel like I feel and hear every little bump in the road even those seems that you sometimes have every 20 feet or so. I put factory 17” alloy rims and tires (215 50 17) on it. I don’t have much to compare it to since the 16” tires (205 55 16) were pretty shot so I replaced them right away and found the factory 17’s for a great deal. My 04 matrix with a 100K more miles (255k) rides smoother in 16’s
I've heard a bad scrub radius will also cause premature wear on the ball joints and tie rod ends. Also the from what I understand the taller sidewall tires are better in the snow. I know that narrower tires cut through the snow to the ground better but would you be able to explain why more sidewall is better.
You forgot to talk about hub bore size when upgrading to aftermarket wheels, very very important.
Very well explained!👍 Are you dropping in a Audi Supercharged motor?😛
2.7t is twin turbo more legendary than the supercharged.
I like learning from both you and Scotty. Two ways of saying the same thing helps people like me get it..."Ooooh now I get it." LOL 😅😅😅
Great video.
My Subaru has 17" rims and I want to change to 16 or 15 and put thicker tires for offroad performance. Could you please walk me through the thought process for how you adapt the tires? the standard tire size ratings don't seem to include the overall radius or diameter of the tire. for example 225/60r17... I am not even 100% sure I want to do this because obviously it would mean having to buy new wheels and possibly it just makes more sense to buy more aggressive all terrain tires at the standard size for my vehicle. I am just an occasional weekend warrior after all and I'm not keeping this car forever. But this problem is interesting me, I would like to understand it and figure it out. Also it seems very difficult to find the weight of tires and rims. To be honest it just seems like tire regulations are in the dark ages and the stuff you need to know you have to hire a private investigator to figure out. Thanks for any help. Brilliant video, I subscribed although I'm pretty sure you're diving deeper into car magic than I need to go in your other videos. Loved your explanations in this video, thank you.
Scrub radius!! Subbed rightaway!! Tnx for the infovid from Phillipines..
XS power, stage 3 is under 3k... What you waiting on!!! Very informative
That wash a nice to know, budy I am planning to go 15 to9 18.... it's in NV200 2015 Nissan... what is your advice. .. my of set is +20 and center 5x114.3 what do you say
Looking forward to the Audi mods!👍.
YOU NAILED IT BROTHER..I THINK I SHOULD STAY WITH THE STOCK TIRES AND RIMS..HALF AN INCH INCREASE IN HEIGHT DOESNT MAKE MUCH OF A DIFFERENCE..
Niceeeee! I wanna see that audi modification!😎
any advice im planning to change my steelie for my 2013 corolla size 15x6 offset 33mm and use 15x6.5 offset 38mm will i have any problems in engine or in my suspension thank you in advance
Lol I've been looking for those exact wheels that are on your audi, for my audi. Chicago potholes just are too much for my sport suspension and 18 or 17 inch wheels to handle.
Excited for the mods! I really am not a vw fan, especially after changing the clutch and flywheel on my friends A4 turbo. Not a fun job. But it'll be cool to see what you do with it.
Stick with mk1/2 and it's much easier to work on than newer stuff. Dreading doing vr6 timing chains in the wife's old Jetta before I cut it up to install my Smythe Ute kit.
Tell me about it. the Tacoma i'm currently driving had 16x10s put on it by the previous owner. you REALLY don't want anything wider than a 8 inch wheel on these things. Lots of rubbing, and it's probably going to put some really bad wear on the tires i just bought.
How do I know if a bigger tire will fit my wheel? The tires on the wheels now are 275/35Z it's a size 18 wheel I want to get bigger tires mainly just to have it look good from the back would I run into any issues if I got a bigger size for example a 295 or 305?
Swapping the wheels of different trim level would be ok for the same model??? Say I have camry xse, i want wheels of camry le same model ???
Keep em coming bro. Im paying for your next haircut.
Yeah get wheels and tires that fit. Great run down
HOW should we check for BODY CLEARANCE on suspension and tuening with those aftermarket products .
I think I’ll keep the rest of this video for when I go to bed tonight. Less than half way through and it put me to Sleep
HELLO! I have a 2009 Toyota Camry with 111 mileages but I’m planning on selling it to get a Toyota Highlander V6 2006-2007 . Would that be a good idea? Dealing with the snow in New England...
I only went up on size on my vehicle, I was advised my Honda wouldn't hold up with wide tires, so I went with the size I was advised.
I have a 07 honda civic lx just got 17 in 245 45 17 voxx rims they seem to fit fine have just started getting some humming noise post 700 miles
I was wanting to replace my 225's with 245's 18.
Does my car handle well? I turn the wheel left, the car goes left. I turn the wheel right, the car goes right. It handles just fine. For every race driver, there's a million wannabees. I'm not either of those. You explained things well, again. Thank you, and keep it up. Oh, and a dog in the video never hurts!
are you on crack
Honesty appreciated. Please merge out the left lane, hog
The most important thing to watch on audis and vws and venz anything with bolt lugs make sure there not from steel wheels cause alloys are thicker needing longer studs
6:12😂😂🤣 -you so silly!
you so naughty
I have a 2013 Ultima what is the biggest and the widest I can get With out messing with the ride
I have heard the max 5 MM +- degree recommendation for wheel offset. However, I wonder on what it is based? Can one say that a 5 MM change would not significantly impact handling, steering feel and stress on the suspension?
30mm is safe as I experienced. Sometimes it's NESESERY to wide offset the wheels, especially when lifting a vehicle.
My wheel is 17" x7.5 45mm offset The wheel I wnt is 17" x7 40mm offset, will this wheel work?
Ahh, you seem to own a C5,you’re a man of culture lol
Hahaha same I have C5 avant 1.9 tdi with 15 inch wheels 😂😅
Hi friend, Can I use 215 70 16 instead of 225 65 17 for crv 09 winters?
I love the a6 c5
I am looking at a car with really wide wheels and tires and is low profile. I think it is a 205 70 vr15
My car is a toyota avanza 2010 with 185/65 R15. Im planning on upgrading to 16s. Is it recommendable? Hope u can reply asap
Hi can use 89 octane my corolla 2016 coz its have 10.0 ratio engine
Hey ratchets and wrenches, I have a 2007 Toyota Corolla S and i had 195/65R15 tires on it but, The tire place put 185/65R15 tires on it ... What difference will this make? Less MPG? more MPG? ... I read that the S model should have 195 on it.
Great advise and the best advice you are going to get. Do not listen to your local armchair racing car drivers. This guy knows what he is talking about. I'm into very luxurious cars with a very comfortable ride. However the modern so called expensive but often cheap luxury cars have air suspension fitted, just to compensate for just some of the problems related to their very low and hard profile tyres. And you are paying for all these modern fashionable overengeering trends in our modern cars. Just stick to what the manufacturer makes for your car and buy practical cars. And for those so called lead foot drivers who don't want to, then they are fortunately protection by speed limits on our roads which restricts even the standard cheap car from using most of it low performance and power.
So I have a 98 Lexus ES 300 that comes stock with 15’s and I’m wanting to put 20s on it how would that affect my car
Hey wait a minute I just recently read an article stating that car manufacturers are designing cars with bigger Wheels now and I also seeing some wheel manufacturers are designing Wheels with carbon fiber barrels so hopefully it'll all balance out in the end
What is the tallest tire that will fit on a 2012 Chevy Malibu with 17" rims?
