    • there is a culture of complacency in this country. the previous cbc report from ghana was saying how the FBI had contacted ghanian officials about car thefts but not RCMP. also, the govt agencieshave a culture of 'this isnt my problem'. i remember when i was in immigration-custom enforcement and i couldnt find an agency to take responsibility for the ports. they all say they have a partial role at the ports and for me to ask another agency also: something im doing in my neighbourhood and suggestion to residents, set up neighbourhood watch groups. have ppl walking around neighbourhood at night. do not rely on technology or expect regular police patrols

I laughed at them and said try again. They said if I put an immobilizer in it and let them also track my driving through an app I'd save 10%. I just laughed again and told them if that's the best they could offer a customer of at least 20 years I'll be shopping around. Well I found insurance in one call for $7 a month more than my F150 so now they've lost my truck, my wife's car, a motorcycle, a house and an ATV. I am now saving $2500 a year between everything and now I'd like to thank the dude in the India call center for not giving a dam and sending me on my way.

  • How can they not catch a stolen vehicle being extorted out of the country? Do they not check the export paperwork? Do they not check what’s inside the container? I’m inclined to think that insiders at the port are part of these gangs. In depth investigations are necessary to break this network.

  • Seems like all the cars robbed in Ontario and Quebec are going to the port of Montreal. How hard is it to increase security measures and validate every vehicle that is leaving the port on those giant ships? In any case, the thieves (when caught, which is rare) seem to get out within 2 years. In Japan, car thefts get you 10 years... Insurance companies don't help either, they just sit by and laugh as they raise your rates for your car getting stolen 🙆🏾‍♂️🤷🏾‍♂️. Seems the best solution is to only buy older, low quality cars that the thieves wouldn't be interested in.

  • The insurance companies have already come up with a solution…gps trackers. They can be bought on Amazon for under $50 and requires a cell phone plan for well under $100 a year. With a tracker, police can find the car literally within a hour or two of it being reported stolen, possibly with the thief still driving it. It blows my mind why the police isn’t recommending this to car owners. Police can also encourage cell service providers to bring down the cost of the cell plan by offering it as an add-on to the customers’ existing plan. Please CBC, do the public a favour and talk to the police.
