Just because the object of the insult or joke took it well, doesn’t mean that another person doesn’t have the right to be offended. I agree with you, in that Sofia was not offended and it was all in jest, but I think the point he was trying to make was by using negative words to describe someone’s accent it could lead to other’s saying it in a less jokey tone and a more derogatory, offensive manner. Celebrities have to be more careful and considerate in the words they chose, because others will follow.

It needs to be understood that there’s subtext to these comments. You’re dealing with people’s cultural identities, and for minorities in this country there’s a great deal of sensitivity around “foreignness” indicators. I’m not personally offended by her comments, but it’s not my or Ellen’s job to decide that Latinx people shouldn’t be just because one Colombian woman isn’t.

It does matter, phonetically speaking you will only hear the 'b' sound from native speakers. The only exceptions are people from places where there is influence from other languages like Catalán or native languages.
