Can 320,000 Blue Beans Solve this Maze? 4K

The last maze video was fun so I wanted to make another one that fills more of the screen. Again, made with molecular + (previously pyroevil’s molecular script), in Blender, rendered in Cycles. I like the blue colour but maybe that orange is too much - thoughts?

  • It would be cool if the first 1000 beans to exit the maze were coloured red, so we could see how they toss and tumble through the maze before they finish.

  • Nobody seems to have mentioned this in the comments, but the first weird thing I noticed was that after a bunch of blue beans got stuck in a dead end, they would start moving again for seemingly no reason, and this movement would speed up, and the beans would turn into a fuzzy blur. It looks very wrong. Why is that happening? It is very un-bean-like.

    @omp199@omp1992 ай бұрын
    • i think it’s an artifact from too much pressure. beans are essentially forced into a dead end where none would fit, they start clipping into each other and move insanely fast to get out. physics games esp source can have similar things happen

  • I would expect round objects forced through rectangular tunnels to jam. In reality the force of friction would eventually stop the beans. If the beans are irregular rather than spheres then this becomes more likely. If there is a great deal of pressure then the amount of friction will be magnified at particular points by the high pressure. As a frictionless simulation this does seem to work.

    @Zebulization@Zebulization2 ай бұрын
  • I beat it at the thumbnail... Also of course they will. Anything will make the maze if enough pressure gets pushed into it. It might even reach there first since you can't really fill the deadends.

  • There's a faster way... pre-fill the maze with beads, then add more beads. Track motion for a few seconds. Due to back-pressure the only beads to move will be those on a path to the exit. You can eliminate gravity and merely rely on pressure with the exit being to only compressible region.

      @blacky_Ninja@blacky_Ninja2 ай бұрын
    • @@blacky_Ninja Why wouldn't that be? It still found the exit and did so in the way that physics typically does: by branching out in every available direction and following the path of least resistance. Just because it's not efficient doesn't make it an invalid solution

      @ScipiPurr@ScipiPurr2 ай бұрын
    • @@ScipiPurr If you were given the task to solve a maze and you proceeded to simply colour in the whole thing, i doubt anybody would count that as you having solved it. If you are given just any kind of task, in order for that task to be considered ‚solved‘ there has to be one, clear, recognizable way/development from the question to the answer. There might be multiple options of which route you can choose depending on the kind of task, but in the end the „solution“ is always a quite linear thing, cause it would be worthless and thus not a „solution“ to end with something that has no actual use for anyone. The question with mazes is always „Where is the unobstructed way from point A to point B“. There is no recognizeable way shown by the beans, thus the question is not answered and the maze is not ‚solved‘.

      @blacky_Ninja@blacky_Ninja2 ай бұрын
    • @@blacky_Ninja CompSci and math majors would since pretty much all search algorithms do that in their worst-case scenarios. The beans here found the path from the entrance to the exit. It doing that by exhausting all other avenues is irrelevant by the fact that it still found the path Besides, what else are you expecting it to do? It's physics. It's not following some sophisticated pathfinding algorithm it's basic pressure dynamics. Replace the beans with water, electricity, etc it still does the exact same thing

      @ScipiPurr@ScipiPurr2 ай бұрын
    • @@ScipiPurr Yeas, it „found the path“, but the result is completely unusable for anything. In science you document the paths you‘ve taken and at the end you use only the ones that worked, thus creating the linear, recognizable path from start to exit in your final results. You might‘ve visited the whole maze on your way there, but in the end you‘ll always be able to point out the right way, which is not the case here with the beans. There is no highlighted way that shows the right path. It‘s all just blue. I don‘t expect the animation to do anything, we were discussing about wether this should be defined as „solved“. This is purely a language thing, ain‘t got nothing to do with the physics shown.
