What’s the TV show Breaking Bad about?
Walter White (Bryan Cranston from Godzilla and Total Recall), a chemistry teacher, is diagnosed with lung cancer. He decides to make and sell methamphetamine to repay his medical debts and secure his family’s future.
Season 5 of Breaking Bad:
With Gustavo (Giancarlo Esposito) dead, Walter (Bryan Cranston from Godzilla and Total Recall) and Jesse (Aaron Paul) decide to start their own drug empire. They team up with Mike (Jonathan Banks), Gus' former henchman. They also team up with Lydia (Laura Fraiser) and Todd (Jesse Plemons).
Hank (Dean Norris), now head of the DEA, gets involved in the Gus Fring case and tightens his grip on Mike, who will be forced to leave the operation. Jesse quickly does the same. Walter helps Mike to organize his escape but mortally wounds him in a fit of rage. Later, he makes Todd his new assistant.
Thereafter, Walter knows an uninterrupted success and accumulates enormous amounts of money. One day, Skyler (Anna Gunn) shows him the impressive pile of money, explaining that she can no longer launder it and begging him to stop. Soon after, Walter decides to leave the business for good.
Everything seems to be back to normal when Hank discovers that Walter is Heisenberg. Heisenberg buries his money in the desert and convinces Jesse to leave town, but Jesse agrees to surrender to Hank and his partner Steve (Steven Michael Quezada). Hank, Steve and Jesse manage to capture Walter in the desert. Walter, thinking that Jesse would be alone, hired Todd's uncle Jack (Michael Bowen) and his men to come and execute him, but tries to back out when he sees Hank with him, however Jack ignores this and a shootout ensues. Jesse is captured, Steve is shot, Hank is wounded, then coldly killed by Jack despite Walter's pleas. The mobsters find the hidden money and seize the quasi-totality, Todd insisting to leave him a small part of it. Walter then decides to flee with his family, but Skyler and Walter Jr. (RJ Mitte), terrorized, refuse to follow him.
Walter leaves to live in reclusion in New Hampshire, but his cancer relapses. Jesse is reduced to a slave by Todd, and after an escape attempt, Todd coldly shoots Andrea, Jesse's girlfriend. Later, Walter takes the risk to contact his son in order to give him money, but this one refuses and declares that he would prefer him dead. Desperate, Walter is about to turn himself in before he stumbles upon a television interview with his former partners, who downplay his contribution to the creation of their company. Overcome with resentment, he decides to act. He entrusts, under threat, the 10 million dollars which remain to him to his former associates, by making them promise that they will give them to Walter Jr. at his majority. He then says goodbye to Skyler and confesses to her that he did all that to feel alive and not for his family as he had always affirmed it. He manages to free Jesse and to kill Jack, Todd and their men, but is mortally wounded. He dies in a meth lab on his 52nd birthday, two years to the day after the events of the first episode.

  • Regardless of the ups and downs of their relationship, I can’t help but think that a huge part of what crushes Walt about Hank’s death is the inevitable realization that his own actions deprived his kids of an Uncle who would have been a great father figure in their lives after his own death. Hank would have been such a rock for Walter Jr. and Holly, and, instead, they will grow up without both their father and uncle.

    • At least Hank died knowing there was still a human side to Walter that loved his family very much. He would literally give up all of his earnings that he spent so much time, pain, and effort making just to keep Hank alive... and likely still end up arrested in the end dying in a prison cell. That's why there was no final "screw you" from Hank before he died, but more a harsh truth that he was already dead instead.

    • I could respect the fact that Hank is doin his job as a DEA agent but what bothered me is the fact that he clearly wanted “Heisenberg” not because it was the right thing to do, but more of an obsessive and vindicating need for vengeance. And I knew this the moment he tells Gomey that he doesn’t care of Jesse dies because they catch Heisenberg regardless. If he truly had integrity or a true moral code like some people like to think then he would have understood what he’s doin is wrong. Even Gomez react to him saying that clearly shows that even he believes that’s messed up but ultimately also goes along with it. That’s why up around this point I was sort of on Walt’s side. All Hank had to do was let it go but clearly wouldn’t to be the one who won. And not even for Walt but for his family and to keep the peace. Walt was eventually gonna die from cancer Skylar, Walt Jr, Holly and their children would have be able to live more than stable lives believing their father was a good hard working man with some flaws. Hank would have lived and Marie would still have a husband. Granted this “House would be built on a rock of lies” but ultimately no one would know and it would keep the peace. But both Hank and Marie couldn’t push their pride aside and move on and when everything blows up in their faces want pity smh. Tho Hank dying was one of the saddest episodes ever since Mike’s death which was one of the few times a did not like Walt and was even disgusted. But this Episode wasn’t one of them. This was all on Hank, (not so much Gomez) and Jesse. They played with Heisenberg for the last time and it but them in the a$$. Tho this was something Walt very clearly didn’t want, something Hank even saw before his last breath.

Family was off-limits for him (he even wrestled with killing Jesse so much because he saw him as family). Hank even saw that Walt was willing to give up the money to save his life. I think that's why his last words to Walt weren't spiteful or harsh. No last "screw you". Just the harsh truth: Walt, you don't understand, I'm already dead.

    • @@jacobsummers1530 I get why Hank was so critical, but to say Hank did no wrong like everyone usually does is false. Walter did terrible things, but so did a lot of them. Walt just did so many terrible things that peoples miss conception of the others kinda turned towards they were great people. Was kinda the point of the show. It starts out with Hank kinda seeming like an ass hat, and Marie too, but by the end of it they look like saints. Either way, Hank was very unprofessional a lot, and his own actions caused this. He was willing to be very scummy just to get the answers he wanted. If he wasn't so desperate to "solve" the case, then he probably could've done this in a much safer, and more logical manner. Instead, (ironically kinda like Walt) his ego, and everything got the best of him, and he ended up dead. That’s why the show is great because him and Walter are similar, but just on different sides. They both are controlled by ego, and they both wanna be kinda idolized in a way by the people in what they do. You also can’t say Walters’s family didn’t cause this. This all happened because they never really held him as much. They knew he was super smart, but they never held him too high, and Walter was too afraid really to “be a man” so this kinda drive to be a “man” and getting cancer was just a recipe for disaster. Prior to all this though you can kinda tell that Walter is just viewed as this soft guy that is poked and mad fun of by hank and others a lot in the family. People can say what they want, but I think that would get to anyone eventually, and his family never picked up on it, or every took responsibility for it.

  • One thing I like about Hanks death was that as soon as Hank realised Walt was Heisenberg, he assumed that Walt didn't care about his family, but in his last moments, he sees Walt is willing to give up literally everything to save them, when it comes down to it. You can see that it isn't enough to absolve Walt in Hanks eyes, it shouldn't do, and you can see from the way he speaks his last words, that Hank still has a certain amount of contempt for him. However, I like that Hank was able to see Walt's true priority was his family right at the end, and says that as smart as he is - he was stupid. I'd say it's a good way to sum up Hanks last thought about Walt. He goes from thinking "He's an irredeemable bastard" to "My brother in law is still obviously in there somewhere, but what a stupid, fucking idiot."

    • It was consistent with Uncle Jacks' character. Of all the organized crime leaders, Uncle Jack was the most human and relatable. If there was any way to avoid killing Hank, he would have done it for Walt But Gomez had already been killed in the shootout, so they were all looking at capital murder of a DEA agent. If they let Hank walk away, all of them are dead men (including Walt). So he had no choice but to kill him. Uncle Jack does let Walt live, and not just that, but lets him keep a small fortune in cash, which was incredibly kind and honorable. If Gus or Tuco or any of the other villains from the series were in that situation, Walt would have been buried in the same hole as Hank and Gomez.

Todd wouldn't stand for Jack taking all of the money anyway and he knew he took something precious from Walt so it was the least he could do. Also think about how far Walt was willing to go to cover his ass. He had Jack murder 9 witnesses across multiple prisons simultaneously within a span of 2 minutes. They could have been intimidated or anything but they were outright killed because there was no other choice. Now he's seeing the head of the DEA being a witness to the murder of his partner, him seeing all of their faces and him knowing about their connection to Walt. • The show was heavily funded by the DEA, which is why Hank is such a admirable character and also why the show is completely absent from phone and wire taps (one of the conditions of funding/using the cool police gear and locations etc is that you do not depict the dea engaged in wiretapping activity, which in real life is the majority of the work)

  • “You’re the smartest guy I ever met” Walt received what he wanted all along, the realisation and validation that he was the best at something, yet it took him until he nearly lost a family member to find this out, and realise the mistakes of what he had done and become. You can see Walt's realisation in his eyes as he realises what he did, when everyone knew how great of a scientist he was all along

  • The character sketch of Hank is so very powerful. He is shown as a quirky yet smart officer at first, then the incredible killing the twins scene, where you realise that the man is not easy to put down. The turmoil of a person when he can barely do any work when he was recovering from the injury was also perfectly embodied by Dean Norris. Lastly, the blast where he realises the man he has been looking for over a year is his own brother-in-law. The sheer pain to be cheated and fooled upon someone you love so much, and then this scene. The perfect hero of the show, ASAC Hank Shrader.

Then as Walt desperately pleas for his life - he realises Walt's true priority was indeed his family. He still has contempt for him, but seeing Walter beg for his life with 80 million dollars shows Walt really put his family above everything else.
