Couldn't find anyone else mentioning this, so i will. The transfer speeds you showed are in Giga**bits** (Gb) not Giga**bytes** (GB). The difference is a difference of 8 times, 1 byte is 8 bits.
That's when they don't use Gibibytes which should never have existed. We were fine with having 1k = 1024 bytes
Usb 4 (40) only 5gb / per sec
@fstemarie difference is even more extrem than gibibits/bytes. 8 Gibibytes = 8.5 gigagbytes. 8 Gigabits is one Gigabyte. He messed up bit/Byte, not Gibi/Giga. Point stand usb/data standards are gone wild 😂
1 GB 🟰 1,000,000,000 bytes
Fundamentally, yes. But the reason gigabit is used is because it's the measurement of the speed of transfer, while gigabyte is the measurement of storage. Two completely different applications
John, the main purpose of choosing USB-C was initially to reduce the overwhelming abundance of chargers that is impacting the environment. The second one was user convenience. I can't tell you how many time I was at friend's house and when asking for a charger I had no choice but let my phone die because didn't have the type of connector my phone had. All USB-C cables support charging. So it is mission accomplished in my opinion.
Yeah, they are not a perfect, universal, all work amazing solution. But it is absolutely a vetter solution than what was had before. And also, tech will progress and get better, so higher transfer rates and such just makes sense to me happening. Why would you not make faster cables if it was financially feasible. But, his complaint of, manufacturers should be using universal cable identification labels that he made in a comment,(That exists but is rarely used) 1000% agree. They should be labeling these products more clearly to denote such info as video support, no data, etc. Some do, not all.
I've bought many gadgets/devices which came with usb-a-->usb-c charging cables (headphones, flashlights, trimmer..). Almost all of them went straight to the bin because of the ridiculously low charging power, and of course without any markings on the cables themselves, I jad to figure out why it would take an entire day to charge the headphones 🤷♂️ I think there should be an universal power capacity marking on the usb-c cables

IKR? this video was annoying. USB-C is a connector, not a standard for the entire cable
@@SourCyanide The video misses the point of USB-C. It's not on cable to rule them all, its one connector. The protocol is what varies. If you want a cable to carry the 100W (actually much more now), video, i2C, sound, HID, and the dozens of other protocols, you might find that cable is thick, short, and heavy - because the PD spec cable is going to be a thick cable, and if you need it to carry the extra for speed, it's several pairs of twisted wire as well as the power cable, so you have just doubled the thickness and weight of the cable, then you will be complaining your device broke from using an impractical cable for minor tasks. No matter how you communicate the right way to do something, people will miss understand then spread incorrect information.
@@dennis8196 also can't your pc identify the speed?
@@badoem5353 the protocol checks if the cable is able to reliably transfer data at whatever speen both parties (host and slave) can do. That is it checks the cable for all wires or some, if the connection is RF noisy and if there is an interface chip in it. The cable debuted as the fix-all solution, not just the symmetry solution. Turns out, it did not fix all. Just as you say, the problem persists.

Your problem is not USB C "port", your problem is cable 🤔
The thing about USB type C is that it is a form factor, not a data transfer or power delivery standard. The reason there are so many kinds is because not all devices can accept the same amount of power or data speeds. A more capable cable means higher manufacturing cost and inevitably more cost to the consumer. In order for them to all be the same you would need all TB4 cables which at $40+ each could get spendy fast… So, while it may be confusing, it is beneficial to still have all the different types available.
"The thing about USB type C is that it is a form factor, not a data transfer or power delivery standard. " Actually that's a great straight forward way to explain it. Makes sense.
It’s beneficial… IF you can tell the difference. Accidentally grab the wrong identical black cable and your presentation/holiday is ruined because you can’t transfer data/charge your switch? It’s frustrating as fk.
If I could buy cable for 40$ that last at least 10 years instead of six or seven which last half a year of usage for 10$ each, that would be beneficial. Instead the consumers are still screwed and companies making a fortune. That’s capitalism and forced obsolescence my friends.
actually it's worse than before cause now it's much easier to grab the wrong cable and not know it until you actually need it and it doesn't work.
If they amended the standard to require printing the spec abbreviation on the cable itself somewhere (ideally on the side of the plug), a lot of the confusion would be solved.
USB-C defines the connector, nothing else.
The problem with USB C is that you don't like needing to know what the fucking thing is designed for, you just want it to do.

The non-data-transfer cables are actually very useful. Some public chargers can actually be hacked so that you're at risk of transferring some bad shit to your phone. IMO manufacturers should include a non-data cable for the charger, and optionally a separate data cable, maybe in another color.
Exact, it's a feature. He calls himself a nerd gear head but doesn't understand this very important point 🤦♂️
I see it both ways really but most expect to be able to sync and stuff over the included cable... So i probably sit more on the side of having a data cable included and selling an optional non data cable or something similar
The risk of public chargers is minimal. For one, the odds of connecting to a malicious charger is very low. For another, it has to take advantage of a flaw in your specific phone. USB-related flaws (and even OTG command sequences) are usually extremely specific to individual OSes, if not individual models. If it's not taking advantage of a flaw to bypass security, you get a prompt asking if you want to trust the computer, a huge red flag for what should be just power. Finally, a malicious public charger that attacks connected devices has to have a mechanism to store and/or transmit collected data. The ways of transmitting this are limited and leave evidence, and the presence of the malicious device makes for additional evidence of the crime. There's a reason that no such devices have been found in the wild. In over a dozen years since the first reports of such attack capabilities from researchers, not one verified malicious station has been identified. If you're that worried, get a USB condom that allows power but not data. You don't need an entirely separate cable.
@@JarrodFrates Yeah, that is in fact true. Most if not all modern OSes are extremely secure and by default Android will just not allow any data going in or out unless you specifically tell it to, but it's better to be safe than sorry as they say. This was an existing problem before USB-C. Take for example micro USB, there were cables that did not transfer data. We went from a dozen cables and their variations to one cable and it’s variations. Still quite an improvement
And micro USB only has 4 connectors, compared to USB C’s 26. If they needed to make microUSB cheaper by removing 2 cables, you can imagine what USB C manufacturers have to do to make a cheaper cable.
You can have a one cable fits all, it's just that it also costs more. It's called a thunderbolt cable. Usb-c to usb-c with everything included.

Honestly, it's really important to me to have cables that *only* charge, because then I feel safe plugging my phone into whatever wherever, knowing that I'm not downloading viruses or uploading my data if all I need is to charge my phone.
My mental requirements to use each device with the cable it came with has honestly saved me from this issue
I can't. My cat eats any cable not braided.
Unless you play pokemon go and burn through cables like a hummer does gas😅
this was life before USB
Part of the issue is things that have usb-c ports but don't come with a cable for it, for instance my laptop has a USB c port that supports display out but doesn't come with a cable for it
All I can think of is the scene of obi wan crying and screaming about how anakin was meant to be he chosen one
Bro I was about to comment that 😂
Same
"You were the Chosen One USB-C! You were supposed to destroy the fragmentation, not join them!"
Bro get a universal USB C cable for once for all.
Bro really said "nah these mfs too good there’s something fishing goin on“
Still an improvement. Usually a cheaper cable still works. Slower, but it still works.
And the good ones work on everything unlike before
Not for charging your phone.
Can't expect a $2 cable to support your 80watt adapter.
@@iamsheel Exactly for charging my phone. The cheapest cable charges my phone slowly and the more expensive cables charge it faster. What phone do you have, that doesn’t charge?
@@bettertoaster it doesn't matter what phone you have. Bad cables will never charge your phone fast enough, and some will even charge slower than the consumption rate of your battery that it would look like it drains the energy from it.
This is like that time I decided I would only buy black socks to avoid losing one sock from every pair. Now I have all black socks… but slightly different shades and textures, enough to be infuriating
underrated comment
Done the same, years ago. I feel your pain.
But it means in a pinch it works
Same 😂
My solution was to ditch all my old socks of varying shades and just buy several dozen of the same brand. When I run low on black socks, I'll either ditch them all and get new ones, or buy several dozen dark grey socks.
I do notice that usb c chords tend to last quite a bit long than others. That’s the only reason I like them so much.
My problem is with laptops. You already need a brick, so its going to be different. I dont want a cord that'll snap if I forget to unplug it.
Back in my day… Every cell phone had a different charger 😂

small note: those measurements are gigaBITS per second, separate from gigaBYTES. a gigabit is 1/8 of a gigabyte
Came here because of this 😅
I will be honestly. I didn't know gigabits were a thing, and if we were having a conversation I wouldn't have picked up on it being different. Would've just figured it meant bytes. Thanks for making me learn something today. I was going to say. Who the hecks needs 40 gigabytes per second? Running a damn server on USB C or something?
@dianapennepacker6854 yeah. 40 gigabit however can easily be taken up by raw uncompressed video
@@MoMoMonsterkil That is a crazy fact I didn't know. I would have said a gig at most. It is crazy how far compression has come honestly in my lifetime. It is a really interesting tool we plebs don't think about really. I was just thinking about WinZip after thinking about MP3s. Which was since I was reading a conversation about the Voyager message on how many KBs they use. Haven't used WinZip in forever.
True story i talked to a guy that works for a company that prototypes data/power connectors... He didnt know the difference between bytes and bits.

Are you telling me you can't read a box before you buy it?

this guy has zero understanding of usb c. its really not hard, and his complaints are so petty and nitpicky its clear he just hasnt put any effort into understanding usb c
@@teancoffee208 Yeah the complaints aren't really valid. The complaint is that a cable 10 years from now is faster and more capable than a cable today, but you may not be able to tell the difference between them? What's the solution here? Unless you're going to require labeling the generation, that's just the way it is.
We need to let the free market work and see what happens
It's mostly to save on costs. Data transfers require the internal of the cable to be different which costs more and monitor cables requires higher data transfer speeds which adds on to the cost. If he gets the most expensive cable it can do all the tasks
Until you realize all those other cables also put us through same shenanigans.
Atleast in one case you can tell if it's going to work or not vs literally having all cables that look the same but being not even remotely similar
You missed the point of the video. And at least the cables used to look a bit different so you could see the difference.

@@kaktus9414 I was kinda hoping they would just keep adding 2s to the end. Like they were doing for the 14++ nanometer process
Point still remains, in most cases you can use one cable for multiple devices.
This is why I always buy USB C 3.2 Gen 2x2 Cables only, unless I specifically need a thunderbolt cable
everytime i see something about USB-C i'm ready to defend the connector as it's never wallowed out on me. as a 2000s kid i'm just happy that connectors stay fixed now. No elastic bands no more.
Really depends on the quality of the cable and connector. I've had two phones fail from connectors failing, and multiple cables failing whether they be expensive or cheap. Yes, that includes using the cables that came with the device.
i agree. but i'm also in the "don't let perfect be the enemy of better" camp. 😂
It's not better if you buy a cable and it won't charge your device. It used to be that if a cable fit, it worked. Not sure who's behind usb connectors, but they have failed miserably.
Exactly. Wasn't it the same with the first UTP cables? They were uniform, but you had Crossed over and straight-through. Most home networks nowadays just use straight UTP connections. No need to figure out whether that HUB needs a crossed over connection anymore. They just standardized it. But dag-nabbit it took a while. Just because technology isn't completely "there" yet. Doesn't mean it's not the solution to a serious problem (in this case e-waste).
I use just 1 cable, I can do everything that you mentioned.
At least i don't have to flip it three times before it goes into the usb port 😂
Honestly I think the main problem was expecting every company to ship out expensive top spec type c cables instead of realizing they can save tons of money on their laptop charger by just shipping a cable with just a few data lines and some thick power lines.
Wouldn't it be cheaper if you didn't have to provide an expensive cable if the user already had that cable?
@@chorisoneira7362 That's where I'm at now. I probably have 20 different type C cables that came with various devices, but I only use one or maybe two of them. The rest of them will never get used and probably end up in a landfill as an absolute waste of time, money, and resources. Multiply that by a billion people and we have a serious e-waste problem. We need a good way to send this stuff to companies that can recycle them. We can do it, it's just more expensive than throwing everything away. No one needs dozens of cheap cables when they only use their fast charging cable and occasionally a data transfer cable, but people would get pissed if their new device didn't at least come with a new cord. Remember how upset people were when they stopped shipping charging blocks.
You could technically still use only one cable you just need one that works for everything you do
The different functions are fine, they just need to be labeled
it is a wonderful improvement. now we only need one port to do all of those functions. I remember having a smartphone with a micro hdmi port to be able to connect it to a display, it sucked. No one sold micro hdmi cables around me. Now I can get a couple nice USB-C cables, and I am set. It takes a little reading before you buy, and you just label them. I usually carry power only cables mainly, cause I don't want to charge in a random port with a data cable.
“What went wrong?” *laughs in Apple product*
Honestly had no idea about the different download speeds and such! I always wondered why I had issues with charging/transferring on some cords, though! Thanks for sharing!
Basically if they deisnged every cable to do every function it would be expensive and bulky. My cable capable of doing 100watts is a THICK boy. Almost as thick as my laptop charger. I got it to charge my phone so its more durable. The power cable should be pretty obvious, but the data less so. Basically if you want max speeds or fast charging, its going to cost you. If you get something cheap, its going to do all of it mediocrely.
@RebirthOfLeGenD what's the more expensive option that's recommended by you?
"Bona fide nerd gearhead" "40 gigabytes per second"

There's so many goddamn people who make that mistake.. It's insane.
I loved that Apple is moving to USB-C because now all cables look the same which can be confusing to a lot of people but when you realize the security measures and sole purposes of a given cable to more likely we are to not be vulnerable or lack in knowledge with our tech.

@@TheNpcNoob Go ahead and look for: “Universal Serial Bus Type-C Cable and Connector Specification Release 2.0 August 2019” USB C specifies both cable and connectors. You’re mistakenly thinking that USB C is only the connector and USB2, USB3, USB PD are the cables. USB C is the connector and cable specifications, USB2,3,PD is the technology and protocol which are separate specifications.
It's still reversible tho, I'll never not be impressed that we made it that far
That also comes with an issue, if you disconnect an USB-C that's charging a device with a lot of juice, you could accidentally twist it a bit and fry the port. Is not common, specially if you pull it straight, but working repairing smartphones I've seen it a few times, altho' usually the cable burns first.
I have several products with USB-C that don’t function unless the cable terminates in USB-A.
