1960's Green Tonka Dozer Restoration

2020 ж. 8 Там.

My Aunt and uncle found this 1960s Green Tonka Dozer at a flea market June of 2020. I was super excited about it, since I already had the dump truck to go with it restored. The Dozer didn't come with a trailer, so I ended up finding one on eBay that was the correct trailer. One of the track wheels were missing. The was an extremely fun project and I love the way it turned out. The tracks were dry rotted, you really can't tell in the video, however they were bad enough that they needed replaced.

  • The part I like most is that I get to see all those toys you have in your junkyard, because those were the kind of toys I played with in my childhood... what a wonderful years... even when I never had one new ...

  • I had this dozer as a tweenager in the mid 80s. I never knew there was a trailer to go with it! I saved up my firecrackers and fuses, then used them to "blast" roads down to the creek behind the house. Then I used all my Tonkas to build a dam so I could play with my model battleship and other boats. Fun memories of a beautiful place to play.

  • I am tearing up right now. This is the exact model that my grandfather gave me when I was a kid. I am 38 now. I loved this model so much I played with it a lot especially on summer vacations. Unfortunately, I lost this and a whole bunch more die cast old school toy cars when our house got flooded. Sorry grandad. missing you...

  • I had one of these, when I was about five, I reckon. It wasn't green, though - my late father, who for many years was a civil engineer, had it repainted Caterpillar yellow, with decals showing the name of the company he worked for. That toy moved a lot of dirt in our garden. It had a driver, too - a funny little jointed figure - one that would be known today as an 'action figure'. Seeing this 'Dozer again brought a tear to my eye - not of sadness, but aching nostalgia. Thank you. And it's a wonderful restoration. Nice one. 👍👍👍

    • I was introduced to a glass beading cabinet in the mid-1980s at a radiator shop I worked in. It really is miraculous what they can do! With special stencils you can also make frosted glass or etched wood designs. Various media will give you various coarseness of finish and they even use special things like ground Walnut shells for blasting engine parts that they absolutely can't have sand left in. And in very special blasting operations, they will use chunks of dry ice- which of course disappears into carbon dioxide.

  • At the end of the Tonka assembly line, in the 1960's there must have been some guy, like Chip, that put toys together. Growing up poor, I only knew of a handful of these toys and that was because of being allowed to play in some other kid's sand box. Someday soon, the size of Chip's collection will be museum sized. Chip should call it Chip's Sand Box Collection.

    • The Tonkas that we see Chip restore probably came from the early 60"s. The oval Tonka logo started in 1955. From the sandbox (which I played in 1963-67) those toys included the giant yellow crane and giant dump truck. Late in the decade a nearby family gave me a pickup, dump truck and jeep.

    • to be fair, the Tonka trucks were of fairly simple design and construction, half the line share the same chassis and cab and all the mechanisms are reduced to their simplest expression, making them quite robust the all metal construction also helps, as metal doesn't have the issue of plastic that can become brittle with time

  • There used to be one restoration channel I watch and that was "my mechanics" now I have too! Your channel and his are the only ones I watch!! Everything you do is so organized and satisfying ❤️! And I love the end result of before and after!! I could go on and on...

  • Man u make this stuff look easy. O took apart my first Tonka truck loader today and that was painful. Lol. Next will be soaking and cleaning, for repair and assembly. And yeah, my Tonka loader truck is from 75, an original one.
