Topuria has a kind of Tysonesque peekaboo style when he moves left and right. I bet Sean thinks he can time a head kick. Ilia got caught with it once by Jai. It's how JJ finished Cormier. Ilia has shown a lot of evolution, though. Volk tried to High kick but it did not go anywhere. Sean probably thinks because he has better reach and is more lenky he can do it.

There's no risk in fighting Illia, if he loses he is still the BW champ and gets to keep all the benefits that come with that. If he fights Merab, his belt is on the line.

Sean is a smart bloke. He’s looking at that Merab matchup and thinking, I don’t need that smoke. He will play for time if it’s at all possible. Ilia is a nightmare too but possibly a more favourable matchup.

Fighting Ilia is a duck because it means you’re avoiding defending the title. Anytime someone calls out someone in another division it’s to extend the title reign in their current division without risk of losing their title while getting paid

I'm not a huge sean fan, but styles makes fights and i think he is a scary matchup for Ilia. Sean got length, he is a great counterpuncher and can generate a lot of power off his back foot.
Ilia has never had issues with tall guys. Ironically even tho he KOd Volk, Josh Emmett who also is short gave Ilia the most trouble. Jai Herbert landed a clean head kick on Ilia and it wasn't enough to put him away so Sean's best punch has nothing for Ilia if he can't even be brought down with the full force of a head kick.

I think MMA math will not work in Topurias favor and Yair could piece him up. The jab Volk landed on him is the blueprint but when Yair or Max throw it , we have a whole other ball game.

Sean calling out ilia is the safest thing he could do which is why so many have an issue with it. The worst case scenario if he gets that fight is that he's still the batamweight champion. Same issue with all these campions trying to fight up. Volk was an exception because he's so active. But we see how that worked out for him. Just a bad idea imo and I like Sean
If Sean beats Chito, let him move up to fight Ilia. Merab can fight for interim while Sean does that, and the Suga Merab fight will be waiting. We let Merab at him first then Sean’s story probably over and we never get that Suga Ilia fight.

That's a head kick from a 145er. Omalley's best punches are not enough for Topuria to get dropped. Sean gets folded easy and it would be an embarrassing loss for him. It would be comparable to how Islam KOd Volk. Sean can't even take a leg kick from a 135er Chito. A leg kick from Topuria would chop Omalley down easy.

The way I see it- ilia is more dangerous for Sean when it comes to the power factor but merab is a worse matchup because there will be grappling exchanges

Im a Fan of Sean for years and I like his goofy attitude a lot for making fun of others and himself. But I feel like he’s trying too hard to be cool when he’s at a press conference or any ufc event (UFC 298)… stay humble Sean and do your thing, but don’t try to force the star power, it will backfire in my opinion
