The D-Day landings achieved great success due to several factors, including the element of surprise. Despite the massive gathering of troops along the southern coast of England, German intelligence remained unaware of the impending invasion. Hitler's Generals, under the impression that the rough weather conditions made a landing impossible, were taken off guard. Although the mission was nearly impossible, the combination of surprise and a massive invasion force proved to be a winning formula.

Every school should have this included in their History class as a subject and a constant REMINDER that we OWE so much to those who gave their lives so we can go about our daily lives as we do. I am 61 now and I went to school when WWII was included in History class. A-last, today’s generation missed what needs to be still told…

    • @nhabro660 Absolutely and it was not just the soldiers. This time mothers were being killed. A primary Axis goal (especially the Germans) was to kill civilians. Most of the more than 55 million people killed were civilians and 90 percent of the civilians killed in the War were killed by the Axis powers.

Sorry that WE did not know how to preserve the most precious gift from You for the world and for our lives. We are partially and systematically dividing the world in the name of peace and world order. Today we have another war in Europe involving All the parties mentioned in the documentary.   • 2nd Alamein was failing until the 9th Australian Division broke into the German lines in the north. Monty shifted his focus from the failing southern sector to support the Australian drive to the coast. Rommel arrived from sick leave in Europe in time to send his armoured reserves north to meet the 9th Divi. After weeks of heavy fighting the Germans stopped the Australians but could not force them to retire. Monty then reverted to the southern attack and the British armour broke through after more hard fighting. Both Churchill and General Alexander recognised then and later the part played by the Australians in winning the victory. Soon after the Australians left Africa to face the Japanese in the Pacific theatre.

    • @englishandthebeautyoflangu3610 Yes too often the Eighth Army is seen as a British Army, it was a British Empire Army. The Germans in both World Wars ignored the Empire and the rather tardy Americans when they launched the War.
