  • As a Dutch FIE referee, I would like to share my opinion on this matter... Both fencers are trying for the Olympics and this competition was important for Tulen because it was his final opportunity for direct qualification. For Van Nunen it was to get selected for the zonal competition, if he made top 8. The referees in my opinion (without speaking to them) took this into consideration, because its an Olympic season. If Tulen would have done this on a Dutch tournament, then I would have drawn black for sure... Easily even, because the Dutch cursing words he used were unacceptable. On an international competition it is harder for referees to understand different languages or understand internal affairs of other countries. I therefore understand and support the decision of the referees to jot gave a black card. My only constructive comment here is that the referee could have done a bit more to deescalate.

  • I think the hit was good because when the light on the machine lit up, he had both feet on the piste and was not past Tulen. His reaction after is tough, I think the refs tried to calm down the situation since it's olympic qualification season and heat is on a little more than usual. I'm glad I am not a ref to make a decision here 😄

  • I understand emotions are high in this situation but like you say in the video, guilt tripping a teammate is just not ok.. The things Tulen is saying to David (“klootzak”, “lul”, “je gaat mij niet naaien” - (“you’re not gonna f-k me on this”)) is also hugely disrespectful towards his own teammate. Hopefully they can or have resolved this otherwise it is gonna be one awkward flight back

  • Tulen lost fair and square You can see in the video it’s super clear the touch was valid His reaction is absolutely worthy of a black card, and I find very weird the refs didn’t give him one

  • One thing that always astounded me when I started reffing was misconceptions about the rules even high level fencers would have. Definitely tough to watch, not good behavior, extremely patient reffing. Whether he actually didn't understand the rule, misinterpreted the action, or just couldn't accept it? Who's to say...

    • Yeah, it’s wild. I mean, I get why. It’s not something they really need to think about; the minutia of foot positions and position on the strip, etc… are absorbed by “hit the other guy as fast as possible.” But still. It’s astonishing some of the misconceptions top level fencers and coaches have about the rules, much less a lack of awareness about calling them.

  • I'm someone who's always obsessed with being fair. I've personally told referees to annul points they might've given me just because I wasn't entirely certain they were legit. In a tournament without video replay, I would've told the ref to annul this particular hit just to satisfy my own pride. In this case, though, there WAS video replay. The refs watched it, and they ruled that the hit was valid. Not even I would have told them, "No, you should annul this hit," at that point. That's just insanity. Yeah, you could make a case for either outcome, both that the hit was valid, or that it was not. In neither case the decision made by the refs was David's fault or problem. Tristan went way too far with this explosion. Yeah, I get it, this tournament is extremely important, and you're going to be emotional on the strip at such a time, but even then, directing your anger at your opponent, who has done NOTHING wrong, is just a dick move. It wasn't like David immediately walked to the en garde line, threw off his mask, and demonstratively saluted the second he landed the hit. He just waited for the decision of the refs and even then his reaction was pretty subdued after such a clutch win. If Tristan wants to be pissed, fine. He can let out a hearty "FUCK" and then plead with the refs through gritted teeth and murder in his eyes, for all I care. But this is just way out of line and warrants a black card. Wasn't he the one shouting about being teammates? Then fucking act like it instead of throwing a tantrum. On the plus side, this means new memes for my clubmates and me to use in tournaments, and I plan on starting this Sunday, so cheers, guys.

  • That’s why we have video. At the decisive point you don’t have to ask for it, the referee must check to make sure is good. The guy was on the strip and did not pass Tulen. Clearly a good touch after checking the video. Attacking your teammate over this is wrong. The dude had nothing to do with it, he just hit him. It wasn’t his call and in these kind of situations never is. A floor touch would be a whole different story….

    @korifencing@korifencing3 ай бұрын
  • It’s crazy they didn’t even give him a yellow. Yelling at his opponent like that should get him something. And the touch was absolutely correct. Wasn’t even a hard call.

  • 0:30 shows the hit valid, about as close as it possibly can get but clearly there is nothing to argue about. Weren't both fencers to shake the referees hand after the bout which none of them seemingly did? Tulen was lucky that the referee was so indifferent, maybe owed to the mass processing mentality at tournaments until the finals, the next bout already showing at the end of the vid.

    @thefriendlyapostate8290@thefriendlyapostate82903 ай бұрын
  • Regardless of the refs understanding the language or not, I'm extremely shocked they didn't black card him for his constant refusal to salute/shake hands, and overall extremely unprofessional and immature behavior. I've definitely seen threats of black cards for much much less, and you don't really need to speak Dutch to know that whatever Tulen was saying, whether it be to Van Nunen or the ref or himself, was not pleasant nor appropriate in a competition.

  • Behaviour like this is very damaging to fencing as a noble sport -or any other sport for that matter-. The black card system was introduced exactly to teach hotheads like this a little respect and humility. He has had his appeal and the only thing left to do was to graciously accept the decision of the referee. If this isn’t a black card situation then what is? The FIE should black card this fencer.

    • whether the hit is legit or not might be up for debate, but certainly you cannot legitimately criticize Van Nunen for "dishonesty" since there is no dishonesty in play here. If the touch turned out to be bad (which is not the case here), both fencer will immediately resume fencing
