Olly Alexander wrote a song. But Joost wrote a Eurovision song.

Back in December, the United Kingdom's Olly Alexander was hailed as one of the biggest stars ever to come to Eurovision. He seemed like the end goal of the EBU's uphill battle to make Eurovision a place where a-listers could bring their a-game. Across the Channel, the Netherlands' Joost Klein had a reputation as a funny, emo rapper that festival kids adored, but it wasn't clear he was capable of mainstream success. Their songs went live within 24 hours of each other... and that's when this story threw us a dizzying twist.
This is our last review of 2024. But if we didn’t cover your favorite song, please understand it is only because we hate it and think it’s stupid.

  • Watching this video after the announcement that Joost does not get to perform due to (allegations of) "agressive movements" from Joost to a camera crew is so unreal. It feels so unfair that the EBU gets to take away such a core moment within Joost's life, over such a small thing. It shows once again (to me) that big organisations really give horse crap about people's wellbeing & mental, while acting so pretentious wholesome at the superficial layer. Ridiculous. Joost, in the rare event you'll read this: You've done an awesome job at the eurovision, don't let some bullies from the EBU ruin that memory for you.

    • trouwens ik ben nederlands, kwart fries. If you want to know something about the frisians then I'll tell you their secrets, they named themselves after the nordic goddess freya, freya is the goddess of freedom and fertility, the dutch word vrijen, vrijdag(friday/freyaday) comes from freya. We are freya's children who desire freedom. the fact joost made this entry already proves my hypothesis. Vrijen the word for intercourse literally refers to being free. Frisians desire freedom and EBU is denying them. This speaks volumes to where europe is aiming to head and how strong the human spirit truly is. @joostklein1

Friday is the day you get to be free, you get the week-end. The fact they disqualified a frisian with the message of freedom speaks volumes to europe's agenda. Eur-o-pean, you're-a-peon. Peon; noun 1. a Spanish American day labourer or unskilled farm worker. 2. (in South and SE Asia) a low-ranking worker such as an attendant, orderly, or assistant. "the elder son is a peon at a nearby school" Frisians want freedom, the word vrijen in dutch means to have intercourse, friday is called vrijdag in dutch. free=vrij. I believe the EBU did this for a reason to subconsciously prove a point. Note: the frisian flag has been removed by google.

  • I am a Dutch person who normally does not care at all about EuroVision (I did not even know it was coming up, if you can believe it). I thought the entire show was just a collection of intentionally bad vapid pop. This video randomly came up in my recommendations and I figured I'd give it a watch, basically just to laugh at whatever nonsense we sent in this time, and how you could possibly fill half of an 50 minute video talking about it. I couldn't be more wrong, I found this to be an amazing video. It managed to make me actively care about the outcome of the EuroVision, when previously I had no idea about the range of genres represented in the show, let alone the underlying emotions behind many of the songs. My expectations were thoroughly shattered, and the level of research in this video (and several of the others I have watched since then) impressed me almost as much as the Frogger joke. Seriously, that one had me laughing so much I had to pause the video. Then right after watching this video I decided to google Joost to see how well he was doing, and found out that he was disqualified 15 minutes earlier??? :( What a damn rollercoaster of emotions. Unbelievable. My opinion as a brand new EuroVision aficionado may be of limited value, but I wish him much strength after this. The song is an actual banger that I am sure will live on long past this moment. Keep up the good work Joost and Overthinking It!

  • terrific video, the "bizarden" comparison with Joost is inspired. my favourite "hidden detail" of Europapa is at the start of the full version of the Outro. This begins "Een kruistocht in mijn spijkerbroek," i.e. "a crusade in my jeans." The reference is to the widely-beloved Dutch children's novel from 1973 by Thea Beckman, "Kruistocht in Spijkerbroek," in which a lad is transported by a time-machine back to the year 1212 and ends up in the Children's Crusade (a tragic episode of European history) --- book was filmed (big-budget Dutch production, English-language) with Johnny Flynn and Emily Watson in 2006.

  • As a Brit I've been wary of UK writing songs specifically for Eurovision, as it's easy for someone to fall into the trap of writing a song that they *think* makes a good Eurovision song, when actually it doesn't because it's too kitschy, cheesy or generic. In the same podcast you referred to, they also mentioned that some of the songs they listened to were too "Eurovision-esque". I get thay they wanted a more commercial sounding song, but I'd be curious to hear some of these songs to see if any of them would have been a good pick. Just because a song isn't your typical commecial song, doesn't mean it can't be commercially successful, as evidenced by Joost. You make a good argument that actually writing a song specifically for Eurovision may actually bot be such a bad idea after all.

    • Interestingly, the reverse was the case for Europapa. Joost has explained in an interview that he would've loved to make it harder - as in, way more happy hardcore and gabber than it is now. Instead, they made the decision to throw a lot of pop in there, to appeal to a wider audience. It's a move that has probably saved the song: the gabber makes it stand out and is a wonderful tribute to a Dutch subculture that is still alive and thriving (!), but the pop makes it digestible to international listeners who aren't familiar with the genre - thus commercializing the song, but without losing its essence.

    • yeah I'm going to need to hear the rest of Olly's album to know if they made a mistake but it's probably a load of other radio hits. I think Dizzy probably has a staging plan they really want to execute, which makes Dizzy a song designed for a live show, with stronger radio songs to follow later in the year to profit off ESC.

    • Europapa perhaps is more Europop/Eurodance, that's something more relevant to central/mainland Europe than it has been to UK music. How he dresses and acts in that MV is likely more accepted in that context. Cultural differences

    • It might be, if you understand what a 'good Eurovision song' actually IS these days, which the souls charged with picking entries for the UK do NOT, paired with a record industry and artist's roster that thinks it's way too good for Eurovision and the artists that may be suitable and want to go never getting approached by the cabal in charge of picking entries. Honestly Sam Ryder seems to be more of an accidentally good choice than an informed one.

    • Same here, although i still don't think it's a great track, as i grew up listening to "real" Hardcore, DJ Paul Elstak hasn't been known to be a "true" Hardcore DJ for ages, but the cheesy (no pun intended) lyrics make a lot more sense now. And although i'm not entirely a fan of the "gratuitous suffering", on the other hand, i was also a major Nirvana fan until Kurt was no more (when i was 10), which is exactly 30 years ago this month actually. So yeah, knowing all this, i don't dislike the track as much anymore, and i appreciate Joost more, but i still don't really expect it to do well, as i think that it just lacks energy to make it really exciting, and it doesn't have the emotional punch to make this some timeless classic, but it did well in the charts, i was surprised to hear that it topped it for 5 weeks. That example they used of DJ Paul Elstak's Rainbow in the Sky, that is an energetic chart classic, Elstak should've used some of that energy in this one. But yeah, i don't actually follow Eurovision, algorithm brought me here after watching an F1 video, but i was kinda curious to know who Joost really was, because i never watch Dutch TV anymore and only hear some songs on the radio at work. Not to end on a too morbid note, he's 26 now, just kinda wondering, he turns 27 in November this year, will he make it to 28 after this rebirth, or... y'know, Club 27, 50/50 chance imo. But i hope the best for him of course.

However, when you analyse it this way you can see that there's something behind these fast beats and funky clothes. • I think the main reason that Europapa is so much better is not even how real or heartfelt it is, it is how well he succeeds in taking you along on his journey. Joost leaves absolutely nothing behind, and his story is both painful and beautiful. In contrast, Olly's entire thing seems to be just 'being gay'. I'm sure being LGBT+ comes with a host of stories and challenges, but the song doesn't really go to any of it. So you listen to Dizzy and it sounds good, and then you listen again knowing the inspiration and it falls flat. Listening to Europapa once will have you go 'wtf', you look at an interview, and you learn that Joost put his heart and soul in there. Then you listen again, and you see his past, present and future, his hopes and dreams, his fears and nightmares, his fond memories and his trauma, his pride and nostalgia, his anger and his joy, it's ALL THERE. It's a gut punch. And all the while, he's partying, like his life depends on it. It probably, unironically, does. Joost, through a million tiny things, invites you to go along with him. Olly, in contrast, wants you to look at him. To me, that contrast is more Dutch than windmills. We don't believe in superstars. Joost is one of us, and it feels like it.

    • I don't like Dizzy but if Eurovision just ends up being about back stories it could be like one of the worst game shows. Whether war, heart condition, gender fluidity we've seen it a few times in Eurovision the last decade. The music ends up not being the main thing

  • Otto Walkes, the original Frisenjung, lol, the one and only. He has been a commedian for decades, composer, actor, musician (though its usually in comedic form) and cartoonist with his Ottifanten. He is from the northern region of Germany. My grandonkel had met him a few times a long time ago when Otto was young, he seemed friendly. My other Onkel had all his records, thats how i got introduced. He was definetely unusual back in the 70s when he started out, ahead of his time, but VERY funny. I STILL have some of his jokes in my head 😅. This video was great, clearly a lot of work and fast turn around 😮

  • I'm at the point in the video where you said: "The Netherlands send artists the Dutch liked. Or rather, Dutch mom's liked". And you couldn't be more true! The only times I listened to the Toppers or the 3J's or any music in that genre is when my mom put a cd of them on. Which is also likely a reason why they failed.

    • I'm a Dutch mom, but I like Joost and Euro-pa-pa much more than 3J's or the old guys with Shine. So I'm a little bit offended by that 😏.....but I forgive you! Amazing video!!!!You're spot on about Joost Klein!.❤ By the way: The clip you ad to the video when you mentioned Jangue Macroy with broccome ( I don't know how to wright his name and in the Netherlands, unfortunately for Jangue, we call it the broccoli song) that was not him! You got all the other Dutch artist right. Maybe you can correct that
