Windows95man Is No Joke

There comes a time in a man's life when he can no longer deny his nature, and I'm a man who is easily baited by silly songs. Do you have a complex and challenging piece of musical art? I'll get to it if I have time. Do you have a song where a man runs around bottomless until the stage manager forces him to put on a pair of jean cutoffs? I'm going to use vacation days to research it with the intensity of Jake Gyllenhaal hunting the Zodiac killer. You know that meme where Elmo goes face first into the pile of cocaine? That was me, with this song. That's who I am. And if I'm not alright, tell me why do I feel so beautiful tonight? - MB

    • That kind of depends. We have people who are indeed happy such as myself, and some game company millionaires who recognize the role of the society for their wealth. I'm happy to pay almost 15k in taxes because this welfare state still pays my kiddo's meds that are also almost 15k per annum. But I would be happy to pay if she didn't have juvenile rheumatoroid arthiritis. That's kind of the societal contract around here. I pay high-ish taxes, and I get to enjoy a publicly build frisbee golf parks, libraries, health care (and also that for my loved ones!) and fairly good public transit. To name just a few.

  • I haven’t seen people talk about it but I am quite convinced that him emerging from the big egg in the beginning is a Kalevala reference from the Finnish myth of how the world was created & the singer having flown sleeves and moving them in “birdlike” movements in the beginning is then corresponding to the great bird that brought the egg.

    @Xariel2000@Xariel2000Ай бұрын
    • I think I heard that somewhere and it's wild :D So, in a way, if you combine all the artists that wore clothes with prominent sleeves with this entry, you get to a higher plane of meaning? (Kaarija, Go_A singer Kateryna, Baby Lasagna, Nina Kraljic, Dana International, Netta... everyone with bell sleeves...).

  • I'm so happy there are people who actually can appreciate this entry, instead of calling it just a joke, "trash" or whatever!! It seems (most of) Europe has entirely lost its sense of humour, at least what comes to Eurovision, and prefer dull, pretentious songs they call "quality" or "art"... 😔 Having some humour in an entry does NOT make it "just a joke", the same way as comedy film directors are not called "joke directors", just for an example.

    • Okay, but isn't the beauty of Eurovision that there's something for everyone? I don't like Finland this year, I don't get it (I'm Team Croatia). But you do the same thing you criticize in reverse, by calling songs dull and pretentious. It's okay for you to not like songs, but tearing them down so you feel better about an entry you like is exactly what you don't like in others.

      @Tollkirschenkind@TollkirschenkindАй бұрын
    • @@ameliab9391 I know, right?! ;) But of course, in Eurovision it doesn't matter who hate an entry, only who love it, as you can't actually downvote an entry ;)

    • @@Tollkirschenkind I'm not "tearing down" anyone, only responding to loads of hateful commentary I've seen here on YT about this. I sure have every right to voice a differing opinion from those I refer to, or do you wish to say only they have the right to theirs..? (BTW, Croatia is fine, a great song, only it's somewhat copying last year's Finnish entry, much more than Windows95 man does, but oh well.)

    • @@florenna please read again what I wrote. You tear down other songs by calling them dull and pretentious. How is this any better than when people say Finland is just a joke? Please explain that to me. You have of course every right to call songs dull, but if you do this, everyone else also has the right to call the Finnish song dumb. Again: if you love that song and don't want other people to criticize it, that's fine! But if you go and call other songs pretentious, you're doing the exact same thing.

  • I love how everyone always throws a blanket statement that Finland's tax rate is 43% when it is in fact not. The tax rates are progressive and if you earn A LOT then yeah your tax rate is 43% but for example mine is ~20% which INCLUDES health care, unemployment insurance and pension etc., and if you're not completely math illiterate then you realize that it's less than USA. If you guys pay 24% tax which doesn't even include your health insurance, then let me tell you, you're getting a bad deal.

    @Noksus@NoksusАй бұрын

  • I really loved this analysis! I do think it's interesting to point out that it's very easy to interpret the song's lyrics through a queer lens as well - "Call me what you may/See if I care, see me slay", "I am the king, I am the queen", and "Is there something wrong with the way I look?/Is there something wrong with who I am?/If I'm not alright, tell me why do I/Feel so beautiful tonight?" very much read like a message of queer liberation to me, and even if it's not intentional by the writers I think it's really fun!

  • A little misunderstanding there. Maybe some Finns already commented but he was not either forbidden or forced to wear the jorts. He was actually born from the egg (thus "naked") and after a while he got his jorts and he's good to go! Kind of grew up. So all this is from an old Finnish saga Kalevala, where this guy is born from a bluebill's egg. Henri would be the bluebill obviously. With his feathers.

  • The 43% tax rate is actually not right. The Highest tax rate right now is indeed 44%, but you only pay that for the part of your income that is over 150 000 euros, which is not true for most people. The less you earn, the smaller your total tax rate is. I, for example earn about 45 000 euros a year and my tax rate 19% with all deductions included. And the median total income tax rate is indeed 19,97%. That highest tax bracket rate is often used as a propaganda tool by the Republicans in the US to make it look like we have to pay huge taxes, because it fits their narrative.

    @Aquelll@AquelllАй бұрын
    • Also, the American tax rates do not include their insane cost of healthcare on top. Americans (well, except the ultra-rich maybe) are not getting a good deal at all

      @shumstra@shumstra12 күн бұрын
    • There's also plenty of confusion about what *marginal tax* means, or how tax brackets work. Like, if you are in the tax bracket with marginal tax of 44%, people think the tax you pay is 44%, while in actuality you'd only pay that 44% out of the income that you would earn *_beyond_* your income, which obviously isn't even possible. You're actually paying more like 23%, and that's before any possible deductions. EDIT: correction, I was looking at old info. The bracket of 44% starts now at €150 000 (which is a lot higher than it was), so if you just about get there, your actual tax is around 33%, not 23%.

  • The first thing I thought of when I saw this was Swedish comedian/singer Mats Söderlund aka Günther - Ding Dong Song (You touch my tralala) (2004). It was EXTREMELY popular as a proto-meme song. He was incredibly well known to people around the same age as Teemu and I, to the point that Günther was invited to play at Yale. I'm completely serious. Günther & The Sunshine Girls also entered Melodifestivalen in 2006. Tapping into millennial nostalgia for 2000s nostalgia of the 1990s was a really clever way to go for the character.

    • @@zzpazii was thinking that as well.

      @norax3212@norax3212Ай бұрын
    • @@zzpazi That sort of "total tax rate" only applies to people who spend 100% of their money on specific products and services with the specific tax rates. Depending on how you fenagle them, you could claim pretty much any percentage accurate and give a truthful example that supports it. A median Finn pays about 22% taxes, and if they spend 100% of what is left every month to products with 24% VAT (the standard, non-reduced rate for products - no investing and the like that have reduced/taxfree rates), they pay just barely over 40% of their income to taxes. Property taxes and such, if they have any, would bring it up a bit more, depending on the value of the property.

    @Masaim6@Masaim6Ай бұрын
    • In the US it is also very easy to see things that paying the taxes aren't fixing. Potholes, homelessness, medical debt due to no fault of the patient, etc. That erodes the public's trust on whether paying the taxes is worth it. I could be wrong, but I believe American's would be more happy to pay taxes if paying them took care of the problems people see in the US. After all, true anarchists - who believe there should be no government, law, taxes, etc - are quite rare.

But her live performance left a lot of people wanting and it actually seemed a bit too much like Loreen. • The brackets have changed this year. €150 000 is the start of 44% bracket, with the actual tax at that point being about 32%. Getting to 43% actual income tax is nearly impossible. Everyone making more than €37 000 got a tax break, the more the bigger.

  • How could a guy's passionate art and love for music be a joke..? He couldn't wear some clearly definable undies, because they aren't part of his outfit. So in his origin story stage show he's not really nude, but rather shown without his shorts. You didn't find action packed denim in Chuck Norris' and Jean-Claude Van Damme's films..? From Finnish films 'Pahat pojat' comes to mind: "PAHAT POJAT Official trailer Solar Films". Speaking of stage looks, how about this guy's look?: "2. Maanantai - Mixet tahdo olla mun kaa". What's said in the song is: "Why don't you want to be with me, even though i love your Levi's jeans?". Käärijä's 'Cha Cha Cha' is basically a revisit to Fredi's 'Pump Pump': "Finland - Eurovision 1976 - Fredi & The Friends - Pump-Pump". And of course there's Finnish horror movies. Many many horror movies. A few at least: "SKELETON CREW - Movie Trailer".

  • "Cultural appropriation" is something we've been doing for millenia in Europe... the Greeks keep telling everyone that ancient Romans stole their culture, modified it and then spread to the rest of Europe... which is more or less accurate. Then again after the Renaissance all Europeans studied ancient Latin and Greek and the built their monuments in a "Neoclassic" style. Nobody has ever batted an eyelid: why should we start feeling ashamed about it now? Plus all Mediterranean peoples have been sharing the same little sea for so long... we all feel like cousins. Sorry if this sounds weird to Americans... but it is pretty normal to a lot of us.

  • For anyone confused about the finnish "love" for taxes: I have a very average finnish salary and my tax rate is 20%. 43% is if you have a pretty high salary and at that point you can afford to pay more. Kids lower your tax rate btw, and so do any mortgages you have. For that we get a free education system that is some of the best in the world, super affordable daycare (the most anyone ever pays is around 350€/month), affordable GOOD health care, a social safety net, and even roads that sometimes aren't completely ruined. Having a healthy and educated population is good for everyone because it makes a safer society. Simplified: I pay for the neighbor's kid's healthcare and schooling to keep my neighborhood safe for my family because the neighbor doesn't have to cRiMe AbOuT just to survive. Seems like a good trade. 🤷‍♂️

  • It is important to note, that Windows 95 Man had two quite notable predecessors, Markku from Finland, a character created by web comedy group Ruttoryhmä and Stig Dogg, nowadays just Stig(his real name is Pasi Siitonen), who is a really popular artist. Both characters share the moustache, the glasses and the awkward aura with Windows 95 Man. All three are distinctly separate characters, but I'd say that Teemu Keisteri definitely was influenced by Stig and Markku from Finland when creating the Windows 95 Man alter ego.
