    • @@shifty_s197 this song alike other songs on this album have is more than rhyme patterns and wordplay its about placement, building progression, stretching subjects, and moods matching statements. And plus i listen to j cole all day everyday i don't need to hear tale of two cities explained i listen enough and long enough to know all that that song means. Which is why im so astonished by this album and what he did with every single track and making it all fir seemless like it was planned to the T. Like it was destiny. It's literally the off-season. Like Lebron Averaging 42% from 3 for a season. Like damn how much better can he be. Its crazy. Im on my no lie 20+ listen of this album. He not only has songs with meaning each song has more than one meaning. Its incredible to listen to a song like love yours. Or kod then see him attempt something similarly now and is able to make a song with one of those concepts and make it sound however he wants it to sound( not dictated by the mood of the beat) can do a whole story in one verse and hook in certain songs, can keep consrant metophors to the point where no sentence is regular, etc i promise its so much man and you'll understand what i mean when you continue to listen. If not you probably already understand what i mean

  • here's my interpretation: You cant bring everyone to the top with you. You can wish the people you care about could change their destructive ways preventing them to get to the top but ultimately, you can only watch the separation between you and them grow as your morals and passions are more centered around ambition

    • There are two paths you can take, the right way and the wrong way. The guy selling drugs is the same hopeful guy you are he just wants to make it, the only thing separating us is the choices we make, a lot of times we realize it too late.

    • Furthermore, I think the whole song is a double entendre for the “commercial” route hip hop went. He uses his friend which now turned to lean and money as a parallel to how Cole doesn’t feel rap is going the right way - and it’s proven by all the rappers who ultimately got killed for their riches (e.g. Pop Smoke, XXX etc.). The whole song is full of subtle clues “we knew each other’s folks” = back in a time when there was room for both concscious and commercial rappers, before rap started to “have candy rims on spokes” ... what do you guys think?

    • On the penultimate song from J. Cole’s sixth studio album, The Off-Season, the North Carolina native reminisces about a former friend who succumbed to the temptations of drugs and gang life. The narrative culminates with the apparent murder of J. Cole’s friend as he laments over their deteriorating friendship.
