    • Favorite line from the entire song! Blows my mind how chill he can keep it while still absolutely murdering his flows like that, and still somehow also manage to make it all an important message. So glad that we still have rappers like this in 2021.

  • Straight up no cap at all. Yesterday I was at a water park with my 3yo son, and we were in the wave pool. He had a floaty vest on and he was floating on his back with my hands under him guiding him around the pool. He was afraid of the pool for a while and out of nowhere he looked at me and told me “dada don’t hold me, I can do it”. He instantly started to kick his legs and hands and yelled “dada I’m swimming, I told you!” And I right away thought of this song and it made me have a surreal dad moment. Yes your kids will grow up and be their own man one day. Cherish the early years because it’s true, one day they’ll say let go my hand.

    • My son is 6 and hasn’t told me to let go. But his facial expressions and his mannerisms tell me all the time that he knows! He knows he guides me just as much as I guide him! My son is my God! He is my inspiration he is my goals. I look at his face and wish I was him! Just because of how much I love him. Of course we have to be fathers and invest time and dictatorship but when they sense your love and run with it! Man that feeling is priceless! It’s a horrible feeling when you do wrong because you have a mini you watching at all times. But it’s also an amazing feeling when you can use that mini me to be GREATER than you ever thought you could be!

  • Best song on the project. No fancy rhyme schemes or witty punchlines, he's done that, hell even this pouring out insecurities he's done before, it's the poetry created by the space between the words, next level for Cole isn't proving that he's a wordsmith but rather that he's accepted the limits of his abilities, the ultimate form of honesty.

"Luckily my bluff was workin' way more often than not But sometimes a nigga pulled my card, tryna expose me for a fraud And with my reputation at stake I was scufflin' just to save face" So basically he was pretending to be tough so he doesn't get picked on early in a tough environment, but people still challenged him and he had to fight to defend his honor. Real shit. This song is deep and is about hyper-agression built into society at a young age.

My wife got Covid and had to be placed in ICU and was in a coma for 2 months. I came home the night she went in the hospital which was the following week the album released. This song was all I listened to on repeat with tears in my eyes. Especially when the hook came on “if I die, before I see your smile just one more time.” That hit my soul. Cole knows what to say. He’s a phenomenal artist and his music got me through a difficult time.

  • Your welcome. [Chorus: J. Cole] Soldier's song, marching on, on Hoping to see home If I die before I See your smile just one more time [Verse: J. Cole] Sometimes I question whether this shit matters Puttin' substance into something in a world so used to instant gratification I found this instrumental on my phone while on vacation Ib sent it a year ago or so I probably heard it before, but slept on it, you know? Shit don't always connect as soon as you press play At times you gotta step away, do some livin' Let time provide a new prescription, givin' truer vision I dibble-dabble in a few religions My homie constantly telling me 'bout Quran, puttin' me on I read a few pages and recognize the wisdom in it But I ain't got the discipline for stickin' with it Now I'm on the way to London, got a show for seven digits I'm wonderin' just when did I become my biggest critic? I wanna be my biggest fan, like how I was when didn't nobody know my jams Today my son said, "Dad, let go my hand" Reminded me one day he's gonna be his own man And my job is to make sure he's equipped I gotta make sure he not no bitch 'cause niggas bound to try him If I said I was the toughest growin' up, I would be lyin' I had a fear of gettin' punched while everybody eyein' Add to that a constant fear of dyin' By gunshot wound, the other violent type of endings I kept a tough demeanor on the surface but was mostly just pretendin' Luckily my bluff was workin' way more often than not But sometimes a nigga pulled my card, tryna expose me for a fraud And with my reputation at stake I was scufflin' just to save face Couple wins, couple losses, some broken up too quick to call it My last scrap was with Puff Daddy, who would've thought it? I bought that nigga album in seventh grade and played it so much You would've thought my favorite rapper was Puff Back then I ain't know shit, now I know too much Ignorance is bliss and innocence is just ignorance before it's introduced to currency and clips Or bad licks that have a nigga servin' three to six, shit [Chorus: J. Cole, Bas & 6LACK] Soldier's song, marching on, on Hoping to see home If I die before I See your smile just one more time [Bridge: Bas] Soldier's song I could be one to lean on Time will right the wrongs Won't be long How can we grow any closer? How can we grow any closer? How can we grow any closer? How can we grow any closer? Something inside of me's tryna crawl up to the surface Something is suddenly smothering, stopping me Stubbornly getting its way (Way), way (Way) Drowning out the wave (Drowning out) I've got a reason to believe that I'll turn out just fine Soldier's song [Outro: Diddy] Lord, please guide our steps Watch us, cover us So that every move we make is in alignment with Your will Your purpose Please fill us with Your spirit Keep us forever in the present For presence makes the strongest fathers Teach us how to lead Show us how to love

    • I think what he's tryna say is that the physical world got man so busy that he can't get enough room to fully stick to the religion. And I think he's quite right, even religious ppl around me can't stick to certain teachings of the holy book cuz of the nature their jobs n the brutality of this world. The holy books tell us to walk the straight path but if we follow the straight path then it'd be quite hard for us to be rich in the present world. So it's up to the man himself, be at peace with what he has, live a modest n decent life, help others n do right. Or play dirty, work his ass off, apply all kinds of politics n get to the top of the world with ppl n money in his feet.

  • Dear lord, there's too much to say, but for what it's worth I'll gladly do it : - Instrumental already being a walking nostalgic kinda vibe, the on and off iconic jungle sample, not added in a predictable rythm and therefore sneaking by, caressing your ears when you least expect to - Cole's intro.... And throughout the hole damn song, the depth behind what he talks about, The WEIGHT on each and every words he pronounces, how profound it is, the tone he delivers all those heavy thoughts with... there was this incredible moment when I was first listening to it, and somehow he happens to talk about the way you don't necessarily resonate/fuck with something you hear the first time (more precisely a beat in this case)....and it's almost like he reassured me, while listening to the project, since I had high expectations of it, but not everything necessarily clicked with me, so I felt like I was missing something while it's completely normal and nothing to be fustrated about, unbelievable.... - The damn vocals man !.... 6LACK already having made a name for himself vocal wise so nothing less to be expected from him, but HOLD UP!!..Can we talk about my motherfucking man Bas's vocals ???? I mean the man is underated as f and is basically like a hidden gem in rap music, but GOD I wouldn't have believed for SHIT that he could hit vocals like that ! Have listened to a big part of his discography before, and still in shock (even with the auto-tune). MATTER A FACT, EVERYONE ON THIS TRACK HIT THEM VOCALS SPOT ON ! (but Bas's...were something else jesus, coating and soothing every nooks and crannies of my darn soul...) But now please... Like cmooooon, can we just talk about the outro for a second ??? Would you believe me if I said I legit almost died being hit by a car (I wouldn't be kidding about those kinda things, and therefore I am very grateful to be alive in this very moment), because while listening to it my mind simply went BLANK : I was literally frozen in time.... Had chills all the way through the track but literal GOOSEBUMPS during the outro. This is definitely best and favorite in the album for me, having listened to almost everything Jcole blessed us with, this is and hits unlike anything he ever did, absolute masterpiece of a song.
