I bought it cheap, but how much work is needed?
It's a goal of mine to own every generation of M3s. When I saw this competition for sale, I knew I had to get it. It's the color I wanted and the price was right! The SMG will have to go so I'll be doing the 6 speed manual conversion soon. I'll be bringing this car back to it's glory while adding some goodies to personalize it the way I want. What is your favorite generation of M3??

WOW
What a lucky dude 👍👍 next time I will comment faster lol 😂
@@JamiesGarage1 This. THIS is the warm reception that all those kids who comment "1st!" on any KZhead video are hoping for. Nice surprise and cool reward, Jamie!
Can't wait to see more of this thing!! I know it's like a hundred times more of a hassle to frame, block, light, film, edit, etc. than it is just to knock out all the work in a super-productive weekend with the radio on. But we do super appreciate you all letting us peek in on cool projects like this.
Recording absolutely takes longer to get the work done by 5 times or more but it’s worth it 👊
Hey Jamie, I too live in Florida and I have been watching and following you. Such a breath of fresh air seeing an honest mechanic. My 2006 3 series blew a head gasket and I was really bummed because I thought I would have to trash my car. But I decided to have the engine rebuilt. But watching your videos I realized that there aren't a lot of honest mechanics around like you. Can you refer me to a Honest shop that specializes in BMWs to have the engine rebuilt. I don't even care if it is out of state. A high performance rebuild is also on the table. Thank you for reading Sir.
I'm already in love with this e46. I hope you restore it to its former glory! I personally would love to see an OEM or better restoration. Im excited to see what you do with it.
So looking forward to seeing this series. To me these E46 M3’s are timeless and in my will never get old. Thank you for all the excellent and also hilarious content that you put out.
A good find you are lucky. Can't wait to see the rest of the upgrade and repair.
Love this! Looking forward to completed updates on this one
Definitely, the E46 is the best M3 ever designed. Enjoy it a lot!!!. Greetings from northern Spain
Looking forward to the series. Hopefully the valve leak does not mean the valves were never adjusted, which might point to a bit of slack in the maintenance. Cheers!
An already nice project car. I am looking forward to watching the next videos.
Super cool e46! I'd love to have one myself. Looking forward to seeing the upcoming videos on it.
Such an awesome and knowledgeable person! You can really tell he loves what he does! Great to see
Nice camera edition details. Hope to see more of these long videos showing all the restoration and swap process. Keep it up!
Thank you! More long format videos already in progress, lots more to come
I subscribed to follow the progress on this beautiful car. I look forward to what's to come!
I'll be posting as I go along with other BMW's too. Thanks for the Sub!
My first BMW was a standard 2004 E46 M3. This is the one BMW I'd want to have back out of the 5+ I've owned and the car I learned how to DIY on. This is like a trip down memory lane! You'll have fun with this one!
I had an 03 m3, my favorite car ive ever owned. Ill be following this build
Sold my 2006 e46 m3 comp pck interlagos blue with smg back in 2019. Sure brought back memories watching this. I'll sub to see your (hopefully not too far out) updates you plan on doing like the 6 speed manual swap and other items you mentioned.
I was so glad to hear you're dealing the SMGunk trans
CSL trunk and bumper are a must have.
Can't wait to see a series on this vehicle!
A new series with my favorite M3? Thank you sir
That is an absolutely gorgeous blue! Not even really a BMW guy besides for old E30s and sharknose 6 series but I definitely appreciate a beautiful car.
Elite motors 🤝 place is heat! especially Keith they always have taken care of me. They always have good inventory.
That E36 325i convertible in the background looks mint!
I mean its no Scirocco ;).. btw the shop looks good. a few new lifts?
No scirocco indeed! LOL. Yep, we moved the alignment machine to the opposite side and added 3 more 2-post lifts. We now have 8 total 2 post lifts. The shop has been growing like crazy!
@@JamiesGarage1 HELL YES!!!!
hi @humble mechanic, waiting on your "how yo move your seat back" 10min video
@humblemechanic I’m thinking of getting a ‘13 Scirocco 1.4 TSi or a 2.0 TSi. Is there any common issues in those or anything I should look for specifically
Do a collab
Les't go! I'm exited to see that beauty finished.
Great color for a sports car. I couldnt do the rust, but its in great hands and youll get some content out of the restoration!
1. Congrats on the new ride! 2. Excited for all the new content! 3. Can you show us how to remove the BMW roundel on the hood?!🤣🤣🤪
🤣
dude its so satisfying watching these videos
I look forward to what you do cos I have exactly same car but not it good condition hopefully after watching your video I can repair mine thanks
Great looking machine! Currently working on my E46 330i ci...that will get a turbo this year.
Nice find.
I’m jealous! But on another note in the trunk I never knew that you were supposed to hook that cover like that to stay! Nice tip I’ve went many years fussing about that when I messed with the jack
E46 content from you is better than anything I could have asked for :)
I can’t wait to learn all about this beautiful car!
Nice video. Keep it up!
I'm in talks to get one of these in July. I'll be here for the ride
It feels so good to restore a car like that. Did a lot of maintenance on my 2005 Z4 3.0i and it’s just so rewarding.
yo, sick! looking forward for more updates
I've always liked the body style of your new M3. Sleek and aggressive!
You just selected a really really nice project! I’m looking forward for the next videos. Would be nice to see some jobs on the differential…
I have a '05 E46 M3 SMG. I added the Frank Smith SMG tune and I'll tell ya...this is how it should have been from the factory. I do not miss the 3rd pedal. (yea...yea I replaced the SMG pump a few years ago and if it goes out again, I will likely do the manual conversion)
Alcantara was also available on the 330i ZHP! I had one ;)
What a lovely E46 and such a great colour 😊 It shouldn't need too much work to make it tip top again. Also, if you're getting rid of the aftermarket head unit then I'd be quite happy to take it 😁 Something like that would be pretty darned expensive over here in Oz if you can find someone still selling such things for a 15yr old vehicle.
Don't forget the rod bearings! Also, the LSD and axles need attention on E46 M3-s.
Have traded quite a few of these E46’s. Most of the owners selling had no idea or was told they could skip the 30k valve adjustment service. Some shops would say just to wait until the valves start making noise then shim it.
Haven’t clicked this quickly on a video in a while. Can’t wait to see this series!
interlagos blue...one of my favorite colors
I'm glad I stumbled upon this video. I enjoyed seeing someone who has an M3 also give love to the diesels. I've got an e46 m3 and hoping to buy an X5 diesel with the (m57?) motor that's in the 335d for a daily driver in the future. I think I'll have to learn how to drop a subframe for the first time, so I can remove the costly DPF related weaknesses though.
Depending on your countries rules regarding emissions related things might mean you cannot just remove the DPF. Also you have to have the ecu coded so it doesn’t think a DPF is installed or else you’ll have a permanent engine light. Best to leave it alone and every couple of weeks drive the car for a longer period, like 30 miles constant driving. Less short trips and stop start driving.
To be honest i do not know what is more creepy. The Fact that the Side mirror's side of things or the beared guy behind the camera, inside that Side mirror. 😂
It's weird too because I recorded this by myself... is it ghost?
@@JamiesGarage1 or maybe its just our imagination or some sort?🤣🤣
I Hit the subscribe button as soon as you said Nothing better than driving a manual
I love your videos, I love BMW and your garage is my dream!
This car looks good. I have a 2008 535i And only has 81,000 miles on it. And I am the second owner car runs great looks great TwinTurbo lotta power
I love seeing these used and driven M cars get a thorough refresh. People buy these cars used and expect factory newness, they sometimes don't realise these are sports cars engineered to be maintained for peak performance. looking forward to the refresh.
Nice content. Would love to buy that radio from you once you update. All the way from 🇲🇼
This is also my dream car!!! I would like a regular M3 in Laguna Seca Blue, Phoenix Yellow or any of its grey shades.
Laguna Seca blue it my next favorite M3 but unfortunately they don't make it with the ZCP package. I'll end up getting one one day though!
@@JamiesGarage1 Alpine white with cinnamon interior with a slicktop and a manual is my dream spec
Love an e46 looking forward to this
Hello love your videos i own an e90 320 I would love to see you work on one of them and telling us what we should be aware of thank you keep of the good work
Looking forward to the content on this one 👍🏽
Just picked up my first ever BMW, a 2001 330ci, yesterday. Paid $1500 with a failed auto transmission. Perfect for a track build with a manual swap.
The after market navigation is actually a Xtrons Head unit, they make plug and play head units for lots of vehicles. I would look into a better one by them.
So god damn excited
great video Jaime, by any chance can we in insight into ur bmw toolbox
Can’t wait for these videos to come out
Very nice e46. Greetings from Germany
Beautiful amazing car :-)
Broski I’m loving all the old videos and all but I need the Chris fix video, I’m glad he actually put me on your channel
When you apply the brakes really hard the ABS system vibrates in the brake pedal. Not doing an underside inspection could be very dangerous if the car has cracked rear subframe if it hasn't gotten the re-enforcement done yet.
Manual to the rescue!!!
beautiful looking bmw ..
Can't wait for next video
I wish more people were around us like this gentleman who knows german cars.
New series yeah
I know a manual is of course fun..But I have to ask-Have you driven an SMG E46 a lot? Like spirited or on the track? I bought mine new in 2002 and still love it. It was amazing at the time. Maybe it’s the nostalgia that has me still loving it. But I’ve also got many other manuals from the 80s and 90s and the M3 is fun and actually so easy yet interactive and a great change on occasion. And those throttle blips on downshifts 👍😜
I agree, my smg pump just went out and now of course, really considering doing the swap.
As someone who has a bmw with an smg trans you are 100% correct..absolutely hate it
I love the Jim Carrey Liar edit!!🤪
Man. I can't find the next video on this project, if there is any!!!!
E46 stock rotors are know to jadder even new, i instantly got jadder after emergency braking lol I think spending a bit to upgrade to bbk is a better option
Ayyyy ORF 757 represent!
don’t forget front subframe reinforcement and front shock tower reinforcement plates.
Alcantara wasnt just for comp! Zhp and some m3s also got it.
I’m curious about your fix @2:28, that literally just started to pop up on mine!
This has been my dream car even since need for speed most wanted. Instant sub. What are your thoughts on throwing a B58 in an E46 ?
I am fan from egypt and i can tell you that your inspection is so good 👍 i have Daewoo lanos and i love it as bmw cars By the way what's the music in the end of the video?
Rod bearings. Like every S54 ever. I have never seen a S54 that didn't need rod bearings. I can't count how many S54 rod bearings I have done. Even the "good" ones and the " I don't need bearings it's a 04" they all had some copper showing.
Rod bearings are on top of my list! 🤘
0:50 look in teh mirrow hahah
0:56 cameraman in the mirror 😂 who else got it ?!?
I don't know if you're a stickler for OEM, but as far as the rear view mirror goes - there's a replacement mirror-only (glass) available from AliExpress and similar for around 50-90 USD depending on the supplier and when you check. The OEM mirror is only sold as a complete module and costs a few hundred bucks (500+). The replacement procedure is dead simple and you just solder 2 wires and use some adhesive tape for the electronics from the old mirror. At least that's what I did for my E46 purchase this summer.
Great advise, I'll look into it. Thanks!
You can also have the mirror rebuilt by radar mirror for $100 or so.
Lol at the cameraman on the side mirror
Clean looking car for those miles. I disagree that the biggest issue to check for is the rear subframe. I'd rank that at #2 or #3 behind the vanos hub tabs and maybe the rod bearings. The biggest issue with these cars has to be the vanos failures. You should 100% be inspecting the vanos hub and oil pump for broken tabs when you do the valve adjustment. Especially with 131k on it. One of my tabs was broken at 55k. I was lucky to catch it before a catestrophic failure. The first thing I did to my 05 ILB 6SPM was to do the cruise control retrofit. It's a BMW parts kit which is basically just a top cover for the steering wheel that gives you the cruise and audio buttons. You lose the track mode functionality though. I found a trick on the internet to use a wiper stalk from a different model with the intensive wash button where you wire that button up to be your track mode button when you do the retrofit to get factory cruise. Best of both worlds! The outstanding question, however, is "how cheap was it"?
that's M6 color btw. my friend got one in this color back in the day, it's great color in flesh.
i saw a yellow esprit v8 in you garage...i wish i could drive it 😌
I live in Virginia Beach that’s a good dealership they have some clean used cars
Gotta say that the e46 M3 comp is still the best looking M3 of the bunch in my opinion
You know your bimmers!!! Literally when you said it’s an smg I said ew and you’re like I hate smgs 😂
Cool car and color. Did you mention the price?
I use my hood strut clamp ever day.
Hello Jamie. I recently found your channel wich I am enjoying a lot. I was watching this video and you mentioned that the exhaust was touching the two braces in the middle in the car. The same is happening to my car. Have you been able to find the cause for this? I still need to sort it that out in my car I was thinking that maybe is caused by a collapsed engine mounts. What do you think. Thanking you in advance.
Nice BMW
your shows are always interesting Jamie
