  • With all due respect, Bulgaria did not send all of its Soviet made BTRs to Ukraine as Bulgaria has thousands of those in storage. the ones that were sent are the BTRs that the Ministry of Internal Affairs used during the Communist times. Bulgaria use to have one of the biggest armies in the Warsaw Pact and still has huge stockpiles of Soviet weapons and a big arms industry. Bulgaria helps Ukraine a lot in this war but doesn't do it openly because Bulgarians consider both Russian and Ukrainians as their brothers and don't want to pick sides.Luckily only about 15% of Bulgarians support Putin and the rest know very well who is right in this war.

  • I work in refineries. It's correct that they should not hit storage tanks - easy to replace. (Like when Saudi was hit by Iran or their proxies. They were up in weeks again.) The stuff to hit is the distillation columns, prio 1, and the furnaces, prio 2. Another prio 1 that is easy to forget is the main HV transformer. If it's 100MVA or bigger, it will be extremely difficult to replace, and almost nothing will be operatingin the plant. Let the lines at Ruzzian gas stations grow! On a side note, many journalists think this is done to hit Ruzzias exports, but that is not the case. Crude oil (and gas) does not pass through refineries. Hitting their pipelines could be politically counter-productive because they go to eastern European countries that Ukraine doesn't want to disturb.

    @mikaelcronholm@mikaelcronholmАй бұрын
    • You mean to say that you could not parallel three 40MVA transformers to get your power back? Distillation towers don't have a lot of fuel in them so may not burn as nicely as a storage tank which could set the rest of the plant on fire, especially if they did not put the plant together properly. This is 50 cycle stuff by the way, so German or Swiss most likely.

      @tedmoss@tedmossАй бұрын
    • @@tedmoss It will not be so easy to source multiple smaller transformers either. They could cannibalize on local power distribution somewhere, but that would turn the lights off for people - good! Distillation towers will be destroyed by the actual missile, not necessarily the fire. Storage tanks are dispersed. They may not even ignite each other if they are hit, much less the refinery. When Iran hit the Saudi refinery they did not intend to shut it down for long, it was a warning shot to show that they could hit them. Only the tanks caught fire. Next time... something harder to replace...

      @mikaelcronholm@mikaelcronholmАй бұрын
    • Pipeline like fuel storage tanks can be easily replaced as well whether east european countries needed crude oil and natural gas or not.

The fracturing is simple, as the hydrocarbons separate, the more volatile and smaller, lighter molecules rise to the top of the towers. At each level, different hydrocarbons are piped off. Measurement of volume heat, and pressure are necessarily tracked, as the entire system is anoxic, and the products quite toxic. The best defense against missiles is to neutralize enemy missile launchers, because precision munitions designed to intercept missiles are often much more expensive than the missiles they are targeting.

If the refineries and storage closest to the front are damaged or destroyed it means more oil needs to be used to deliver more oil. This can severely hurt putins war effort as they are heavily reliant in just time supplies and constant conscription means lots of fuel is needed to keep the war machine running.

But if you don't have working refinery infrastructures, or the technology components to repair damaged refineries, you can't move things, can't operate militaries, can't cook --- well, okay, 11 time zones of vast trees, Russia has plenty of logs for outside cooking. But that's hard in 2024... esp. for folks in posh Moscow. Energy grid & oil refinery destruction are two things Russia simply can't function with, in this war. Russia knows it and so does Ukraine. No modern nation could function when those two things go bad; but especially not Russia, in such a northerly latitude, with so much gas and fossils to play with.... in the middle of a small special military operation that has wounded and/or killed AT THE VERY LEAST 500K on both sides (combined).

They expected that fixed fortifications would be blown apart by artillery, just as they were in WWII. They forgot to factor in that counter-battery radar existed, so using mortars and towed artillery to destroy fortifications (along with dropping bombs from aircraft) would end up being too difficult. They expected that trenches would be meaningless against all of the artillery that Russia had in storage.

  • For the following reasons, the deployment of foreign troops in Ukraine should be seriously considered. - 1) Protection of civilians. In different parts of Ukraine, foreign forces could take over air defence. This is justified, as Russian attacks on civilian targets are a war crime. - 2) Border control. Foreign troops could take over control of the borders of Belarus and Moldova. With the troops released from the border, Ukraine could strengthen its defence. - 3) Military training. NATO forces could help train Ukrainian recruits on the ground. - So, foreign troops would not be sent to fight on the front lines. On the other hand, if the front extended into their defence zone, they would participate with all their might in the fight against the enemy. This is justified, since the Nuremberg trials of 1945-46 already established that a war of aggression, and even the preparation for it, is a war crime.

    • I heavily support this! Furthermore, the NATO troops could work on logistics and maintenance. These NATO troops would help to defend Ukraine, an independent democratic country attacked by Russia. Finally, a group of Western fighter pilots (and maintenance people), working as mercenaries in Ukraine, would heavily take away the pressure from the frontier. The West is not attacking Russia. The West is supporting Ukraine to defend itself. This war will end immediately when Putin pulls the troops away from Ukraine. However, Putin is clearly preparing for an endless war (or cascade of wars).

    • And let's not forget that Putin broke the Budapest Accords. That happened in 2014, when Putin invaded Crimea, and again when he sent 'un-badged' Russian military units (Wagner Group?) into Donetsk and Luhansk.

  • The significance of the Suvalki Gap has decreased drasticly by the Nato membership of Finnland and even more so Sweden, because now Russia can't reliably threaten western capabilties to reinforce the baltic states by sea. There for, the attempt to close the gap (which absolutely would provoke a Nato response) wouldn't jeopardize the support for the baltics nearly as much as previously. That is why Kaliningrad is more and more a reliabilty rather than an asset for Russia. And as much as I am a firm supporter of the support for Ukraine, I still have to insist in the fact that the baltics, other than Ukraine, are Nato and EU members, and article 5 DOE'S apply to them, regardless of their population count. Whether a response would be nuclear, even if the initial assault was of that kind, is a different questions, regardless whether the targets name is Ukraine, Letvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Poland or even Germany or France, for that matter.

  • Mate, they can't defend Belgorod. No way are they going for Kaunas. The Poles have a stronger army now than Russia had at the start. They would be in Minsk in hours. If UAF continue to take out a refinery a night for the next two weeks Russia will be technically already dead by then. Like a diver, or a pilot, that has already blown it. I'm a boomer Englishman. My heroes are Bernard Lovell (RADAR), Geoffrey De Havilland (you've heard of him I'm sure, the Mosquito!), and Ernest Hives, head of production at Rolls Royce. We had technology we didn't leverage fully in WWII. It could have cost us the war. The Dambusters story is complicated, as is Wallis to some extent. The tune means something very special to us. It means we aren't just braver, we're smarter too, and we fight for freedom. I am also a software engineer of some many decades. I've worked with your guys. They are the best on the planet mate, that's an honest assesment I can point you to three years ago. I was organising an operation in Kiev. I knew you were going to do this brother. Davay! • I don't blame the Ukrainian government for not building defense lines during 2014-2022, because Russia had occupied parts of countries before without trying to take the countries in full, such as Moldova (Transnistria) and Georgia (South Ossetia and Abkhazia). Ukraine's government may have expected the frozen conflict to continue indefinitely.
