Wallaroo Part IV: Land Rover extreme offroad test

2012 ж. 4 Мам.
238 535 Рет қаралды

Three Land Rovers including a Discovery 2, Discovery 4 and Range Rover Sport tackle the final leg of the Wallaroo State Forest Trek. Bonnet deep creek crossings, mud ruts and steep hill climbs combine to give all three vehicles a great workout.

  • Hello from USA. Recently purchased a 2008 RR Sport HSE (also black, she's your twin). Many of my colleagues are big "truck guys" and scoffed at my "Froo Froo Yuppie SUV" ... until I sat them down for a few of your clips. Thank you so much for the time you took making these videos.

  • Cheers and Thanks! Except for the D2 that has heavy duty springs and larger bore shocks, the cars have no mods to the suspension or driveline. It's one of the ain reasons we love these Landy's so much. You can step back onto the road and the handle superbly. . As soon as you start heavily modifying drivelines, most 4wd's will drive like a pig. On some trips like our last adventure to the Kimberley, we clocked up 16,000kms in 6 weeks with the majority on sealed roads to get to the good stuff.

  • It's a pity most people equate Range Rovers with 'Toorak Tractors' but now that early Gen III RRs (2002 to 2006) have fallen to an 'affordable' price, they still offer astounding on road presence with very capable off road potential. I bought a silver HSE new in '02 with the BMW straight six diesel and for several years, I took wealthy international visitors on short but 'extreme' 4WD tours to popular Australian destinations along the coast and over the Great Divide. After some 300,000km of comfortable, event free off road touring, I traded it in on an '06' Sport with the TDV6 but was never really happy with it as it did not have the sheer 'presence' of the L322 and when you arrive at a Sydney 5 star Hotel to pick up your guests for a week of Aussie off road touring, this is important. I eventually sold the Sport and bought a '93 Vogue SE Classic 4.6 Litre which I have only just sold at 500,010km to replace it with an '05 HSE with the original BMW M62 4.4 litre Quad-cam V8. Most of my 'touring' these days is running international 'enthusiast' rail tours but it is always reassuring that as a Range Rover owner who spends most of his time on the bitumen, if you choose to turn left into the bush, you can in confidence.

    • I'm a huge fan of the older RR's having fallen in love with them in the early 80's with their lightweight aluminium V8's. Incredibly that you could throw a big vehicle around like that on the road. The Gen III's are great value at the moment if you can find one with low enough KM's. ON the servicing costs of smaller diesels VS V8 petrol motors factoring in the additional petrol costs, I'm actually tempted to go down the V8 petrol path again.

    • That’s some serious km’s, I’ve got a td5 Defender 10k away from 500k km. Preventative maintenance, regular servicing and good oil really goes along way. Would love a l322 they’re becoming very affordable here in SA. Green oval has been ahead on technology for many years.

  • Thanks for the kind feedback. I'd actually love to do a much bigger production but then we wouldn't get to enjoy the driving as much and would spend all of our time etting up shots. This way we get the best of both worlds. The other upside is that you get to see some very honest footage of what is really going on with the vehicles without a lot of crazy angles and multiple takes.

  • The RRS rear just popped back on and hasn't moved since. It's happened with both bumpers in the past and hasn't been a problem. As for the D2, in it's defense, it had already cracked previously so it wasn't a big stretch to tear it into pieces on that trip. There is a nice new steel rear bar now in it's place.

  • The Rangie was actually purchased second hand and was 18months old with only 20,000kms on the clock. It was actually cheaper than buying a new landcruiser and I couldn't resist. Such a lot of car for the money compared with other options at the time. It hasn't really cost me much either as yet as everything has been under warranty. Also huge savings on fuel. In road trim she gets 9l/100kms which is insanely good for a 2 tonne rig. #winning

    • Why in the world would you want to get a Toyota over a Land Rover? I would not even choose a Land Cruiser over my Jeep, much less over my Land Rover. My Range Rover has been the best and most reliable vehicle I’ve ever owned. I just came back from a road trip (Colorado mountains) and my Landie performed flawlessly.

  • Great stuff!! Love to see the LR and RR in action in a place where it should be used :) Watching this my question is: what was the PSI in the tires? Did you lower it to go through? I couldn't tell watching the tires, but it seems to be infalted as for the road driving. Am I wrong?

  • In Australia, ADR approvals are very expensive and the small number of RRS vehicles here means that it is not economically viable for 3rd party manufacturers to produce something for the sport. Fitting a non ADR compliance bar voids your insurance.

  • The dog is a Hungarian Vizsla. They are a pointer (also known as a Gun Dog) & are closely related to the German Shorthaired Pointer. Absolutely beautiful dogs that make incredible companions and very protective watch dogs. Our pooch (HungargunnAllThatJazz) 'Roxie' for short, is from the well know Hungargunn breeders here in Australia. If you look up 'Vizsla Yogi with Crufts Best In Show' on youtube, you'll see Roxie's grandfather in action.

Struggling to find anyone or anything available in the local market as far as offroad gear is concerned. trying to find rocksliders / steps, roof rack, winchbar perhaps. • They don't come with the snorkel but you can buy this official LR version for them. Very neat fit through the existing side vent. Just have to make sure you upgrade the porous hose that runs from the side vent through to the air cleaner as it is obviously pointless otherwise. The RRS is so well soundproofed you can't actually head the snorkel unless you have the window down.

  • it is an interesting comparison. The D4 with the additional e-locker is a real weapon. No need for after market diff locks any more. The only problem is that Land Rover set it up so you can't retro-fit the e-diff and there are limited numbers coming onto the second hand market. I think LR made a big mistake in this regard as they are limiting the opportunity to engage second hand owners for parts and service.
