Hi guys. This is a video tutorial about how to make a Viking ship (Drakkar) out of popsicle and bamboo sticks.
Drakkar was the ship which prevailed on the northern seas during the first millennium, travelled from Scandinavia and floated over the waters of Iceland, Greenland and North America.
We will need:
• Canvas
• Toothpicks
• Bamboo sticks (1 mm) for the oars
• Bamboo sticks (2 mm) for the deck and the hull
• Bamboo sticks (0.12 in - 3 mm) for the mast
• Twine (0.4 in - 1 mm)
• Hardwood sheet for the deck
• Popsicle sticks (4.5 in - 11 cm) for the supports of the deck and the dragon’s head
• Popsicle sticks (6 in - 15 cm) for the keel, the stern and the prow
• Popsicle sticks (8 in - 20 cm) for the shields
• Wooden cubes (0.4 in - 1 cm) for the supports of the deck

  • Wish my hands could do that. I used to be a mechanic. I miss working with my hands and welding. Used to modify bikes for disabled riders some too. Trouble is my hands don’t work too good anymore. Nice work. I always admire work done by hand.

  • Reminds me a lot of what I used to do in my childhood. Gives me an idea of what to make. Although most major nations in the medieval period did build naval vessels. But naval warfare then was centered around boarding the enemy ship.

  • Started watching at 2am in an insomnia spell and was enthralled, then the green tape hid all the skewers and I kept saying "Why did he do all that work to just hide them???". Turns out I was irrationally mad over painters tape. LOL Great job!

  • I just completed a double-hulled Polynesian voyaging canoe (48 inches bow to stern) from scratch and hand milled and hand carved all the wood and was trying to figure out how to make the tillers and oars.....and here you are with the bamboo sticks which I also use in my projects! Great job and thank you for the inspiration.

  • Beginning with the main deck instead of the keel and ribbing makes the whole project much easier. Counter-intuitive to what I have seen most of the time. The ship type makes it possible so I guess a Drakkar is probably the most beginner friendly project for an aspiring age of sail modeler.
