@@user-db5mu7dt6q They Also Fought Each Other In The End At The War of The Roses
In the book 1066: The Year of Conquest by author David Armine Howarth it is claimed that Harold's brother Gyrth had offered to lead the army against William, pointing out that Harold as king should not risk being killed. Advisers suggested that while Gyrth did battle with William "Harold should empty the countryside behind him, block the roads, burn the villages and desttoy the food. So even if Gyrth was beaten Williams army would starve in the wasted country side as winter closed in and would be forced either to move upon London, where the rest of English forces would be waiting, or return to their ships." Harold rejected this advice.
Pride comes before the fall.
A King struggling to hold onto the crown in the face of accusations of fratricide and cruelty, would not do well to be seen torching his own countryside. He was smart not to take the advice.
@@TheHalcyonTwilight At about 4 minutes into the video William is burning down the estates of Harold's vassals in Sussex. At a few seconds after 19 minutes into the video, after William has won the battle and no delegation has come to surrender London, it is William who is burning the countryside. Also, the main reason he rejected his advisors plan was he felt he could not send someone else to do his fighting for him. If you are another lord why would you go fight and risk your own life when Harold is not going. He was worried about how it would look to the nobles if he did not fight.
@@fightsports66 I know that William pillaged the countryside: that's pretty standard practice for an invading army. I don't really see how that works in reply to my point that Harold, being the defender, wouldn't want to sour relations with his vassals by burning their estates himself. The vassals turned when it was obvious that William had shattered Harold's forces and killed him, yes. However, he would risk vassals siding with the invaders if he were seen to be inflicting as much damage upon his own lands as the invaders were. He'd have been deposed as a tyrant king, if not at least having to fight with a disunited country.
@@TheHalcyonTwilight The vassals would have known why he was burning the countryside, as they were with him after Stamford Bridge. Many of them would have been the ones asked to take some of their troops and perform the act. Burning a lords estate and burning the countryside are two different things. The country side are the forests where soldiers could go foraging and hunt for food.
Defeats army of Norseman. Gets defeated by army of Norman.
Yeah, William and Harald were actually related. The Normans were descended from the Vikings who invaded France and pillaged Paris.
@@wanderinghobo4917 Rollo never plundered Paris and invaded France (which did not exist at that time), the vikings lost all their pitched battles against the franks
@@rainieriergrimaldi563 Harold too should have never lost this battle. He should have waited a bit longer, gathered larger numbers and then probably William would have vacated the shores without a fight.
@@rainieriergrimaldi563 what? Invasion has nothing to do with pitched battles, invasion simply requires a breach of sovereign territory, and the reason that the Normans were allowed to settle in france was as a buffer from further viking invasions.
@@wanderinghobo4917 There was no invasion... The Vikings were authorized to settle in present-day Normandy after their defeat at Chartres and as you have specified to protect the Seine estuary and to spare cities like Rouen and Paris from viking raids. Charles the Bald was more concerned with what was happening in Lotharingia and than with simple scandinavians looters. And for information, the normans considered themselves to be franks, see the Bayeux Tapestry or the "laws of William the Conqueror". Irony...
Fun Fact: After the battle, many Anglo-Saxon veterans joined the Varangian Guard in the Roman Empire. They repeated the same mistake of falling for feint retreats against the Norman invasion at the battle of Dyrrhachium in 1081. When they realized what happened they took refuge in the church of St. Michael, the patreon Saint of the Normans. Ironically, the Normans set the church on fire and wiped them all out.
this made me LoL xD
Roman Empire? Wasnt the empire long gone by the by 1066?
@Armando Molina I knew "Byzantine" sounded familiar. Thanks for correcting me.
Not surprised considering Normans once fought a battle against the pope and his army and even kept the Pope captive for months after winning the battle. I mean they treated him good but still😂that Norse DNA is hard to wipe out I guess
Bretons dispute that patronage! Moreover, the Hautevilles descended from a Breton woman named Muriel. Thirdly, the feint at Dyrrhachium was conducted by Brian of Brittany, the same guy whose cavalry wiped out Earl Leofwine's men at Hastings by - wait for it - charging their solid shield wall. (Don't try this at home!)
I never knew the battle of Hastings was such a close run thing. This brought home to me (I mean, I already knew it, but this threw it in my face, as it were) just how much _winning_ is everything. It doesn't matter that the Normans almost lost the battle at least twice. Only that they won in the end. And thus it was a Norman, Francophone aristocracy that would dominate England for the next few centuries. There is a reason why English today is the most romance-diluted of the Germanic tongues... it's because of the Norman rule, when Normans wrote the laws and the books for everyone else. And on this narrowly-won battle, such a legacy turned.
Solidifies the idea that fortune favors the bold. Makes me reflect and wonder how much shit I can really get away with, haha.
No More Brother Wars
@Just Getting By Well said.
@@edwin11373 "the Romance language derive from Latin was way more sophisticated than the "barbaric" germanic tongues." This is nonsense. There is no such thing as a more sophisticated or less sophisticated language. They are a series of sounds that describe things. They are all on the level. Any claim to the contrary is just some sort of mindless linguistic jingoism. "Mine's better than yours... because, because.... well, _just because!"_ Irrational biases are a helluva drug.
And French is the most germanized of all the Romance languages
I can't imagine how pissed off Harold was when his wings charged without his orders
tbh, he should check if his units have guard mode turned on or not.. seriously though, lack of discipline is the hallmark of militia.. generally it means early rout, but it could also mean looting the enemy camp before the fighting end or breaking rank like this..
That's a myth: Harold had ordered his lieutenants (and brothers) Earls Leofwine and Gyrth to envelop Duke William when William's horse was felled and the Normans withdrew thinking he'd died. Harold didn't anticipate the sudden occurrence of the ferocious Breton counter-attack.

@Fantassin de Guillaume I would rather call the guy ambitious as when harold was a noble(and a powerful one) he never plotted to take power from his rightful liege or disobeyed him (possibly one of the actions that paved the way for kingship to him) unlike more or less half of his country when he was king(these 2 northumbrian earls held huge lands and very experienced troops even after the war and they would tip the scales for harolds behalf. If thats not enough his other lords/earls didnt wanted the give him troops just after one war(even though it was defensive too) so as you can see in the video nearly all of his troops were footmen/militas. Then these earls got angry when their lands were disturbited to williams norman friends serves the backstabbers right imo but I am really sad for my man harold he was an logistics genius
Harald did nothing wrong it was those eager earls and huscarls and poorly trained militia men that against their given orders pursued the enemy
@Fantassin de Guillaume edwards promise to william is nothing more than a simple propaganda tool against harold as there wasnt any communication or prepartion for williams succesion during the reign of edward. Even williams sources say he chose harold as his succesor in his deathbed also as house of wessex was already exiled at this period and as edward gained kingdom of england with election of witanegomont(or whatever its hard to write it) and not by sword I think we can agree he was accepted as rightful king back then. Harold didnt supported his brother and stayed loyal to his liege until his death his gains of land was either inheritance or appointment by the king (except for one time his brother was exiled and his realm was divided because he abducted an abbess fun story) and this appoitments was simply repaying favor to him as he was the main reason edward was on the throne

Tragic story this of a king whose short dominion oversaw a great victory against a dreaded long time enemy, and total defeat at the hands of a new one, ending two centuries age eras, and giving birth to a new one. Stuff of legend.
I mean, they were both opportunistic usurpers, and a certain Canute had already weakened the native Wessex monarchy to the point the "normal" method of royal succession (the Witenagemot) was only rarely invoked. By this point England was the prize of the North Sea, and the fact that two challengers vied with Harold within months of his assumption of the throne tells you /somebody/ was going to take that damn island. Of course, Canute, Harald Hardrada, and William only wanted England b/c it had an advanced bureaucratic administration. Of all the realms in Latin Christendom come 1066, England was the easiest to collect taxes from, so these foreign kings wanted it as a bank account to fund their other endeavors. Consequently, I'm always skeptical of ppl. trying to rehabilitate King John or Richard III on the basis they enacted administrative reform. Please! Administrative reform in England circa the High Middle Ages is easy!
A really cool what if scenario would be "what if William failed at Hastings"
Played that in CKII. Answer: empire of Britannia, tons of kinslaying and a shortlived kingdom in Croatia.

Honestly, Hastings was one of those rare battles that was so close, it came down to which king was killed first. Could’ve just as easily been William felled by a stray arrow. And if so, his army would’ve melted away just as the anglo saxons did. Also, to me, Hastings wasn’t William’s greatest feat. the ironies of histories...the bretons are made up mostly of escaping britons who fled england during the anglo-saxon invasions to settle in armorica in gaul, a few hundred years later they went back with william to "avenge arthur"
The ironic thing is Bretons loved the Anglo-Saxons. Alfred was a very popular name in Brittany after Alfred the Great. The reason was King Alfred built a fleet and put it to task of patrolling the English channel where they would attack any Viking ships that went through. They defended the Breton coast from Viking raids and the Bretons were very thankful for it, also Alfred decreed that Bretons when in England had all the rights of Englishmen and could settle freely if they wished. Many Breton nobles fled to England at various points to escape Norman aggression. To get the Bretons to fight against Anglo-Saxon England, which they really did not want to do because they didn't like the Normans at all because the Normans were pretty horrible to the Bretons; William kidnapped and held many Breton nobles families hostage and threatened to murder them if they did not raise troops and join him in his invasion of England. So the Bretons were not really willing participants in the invasion, and would have preferred to fight for the English ironically
@@keighlancoe5933 Alan Rufus was a Breton knight allied with William, and his father, Eudon, was the maternal first cousin of Edward the Confessor and while before 1066 Harold had not dispossessed the Breton landowners and their titles in England, many of them they would not have supported William, but rather would have defended England, and the invasion would certainly have failed. Harold drove out Alan Rufus, who only owned Wyken Farm in Suffolk. Ejecting the Bretons was the fatal error for Harold. But your theory of William kidnapped and held hostage by numerous noble Breton families is completely false, I study Breton history and I never heard nothing about that.
@@keighlancoe5933 It was Athelstan who helped the Bretons, the Duke of Brittany Alan was his godson, he had taken refuge in the English court during a Viking invasion, Alan returned to Brittany a few years later, Athelstan given him a fleet, he defeated the Vikings and definitvly ejected them out of Brittany at the Battle of Trans la Foret. You may not have heard about it, but that doesn't mean it isn't true, it just means you haven't heard about it
@@keighlancoe5933 You are wrong, I have read several books on the subject, written by historians specializing in the history of Brittany, and about the Battle of Hastings. I never heard of it. Can you give me your sources, links, ref please ?
William the Conqueror is one of the few individuals in history not to be forgotten after his death he achieved real immortality.
It helped that Britain became a great nation
@@joellaz9836 did it? The Normans were a devastating disaster for England. It took many centuries to recover.
@@Zakalwe-01 That’s not what I meant. If Britain had remained a backwater and unimportant nation then I doubt anyone would care all that much about William the conqueror, but the fact that Britain did become a great nation helped to make William the conqueror even more immortal and important historical figure.
Few individuals ? There are literally tens of thousands known historical figures.
@@joellaz9836Britain didn’t even exist in 1066, it was England.
Brilliant as usual!
