  • There’s no doubt about it, this is the seminal moment in college football history First of all it was the National Title game, it was the Rose Bowl Game with all the usual pageantry and the incredible setting, and it was the most hyped game of all time, after 2 full years worth of buildup it overshadowed the NFL all year including even the Super Bowl. Then it somehow lived up the enormous hype like few events ever have, by delivering a thrilling and dramatic comeback capped by a last-second upset Plus a lot of 20th century CFB culture ended after this game: the last Rose Bowl Game played for the National Title, last year before the SEC’s run fundamentally changed the sport and conference structure, the last year you had all traditional blue chip non-SEC powers dominate the conversation (USC, Texas, Notre Dame, Penn State, Ohio State), the end of Keith Jackson calling games, the end of ABC Sports as a whole, the end of conference balance in college football, and to an extent the end of 4-year college athletes. All of that combines to make this college football’s high water mark, both in terms of national cultural relevance outside the sports world, and in terms of entertainment value for its own fans.

    • Very well summed up! I as well think of this game as the final send off of the great 20th Century phenomenon of college football. And for me, the end of a prolonged period of personal immersion in college sports. It really, _really_ mattered to me who won. After that night, my partisan passions began to drop steeply.

Gonna be a little difficult to prove your better than a back to back undefeated team with the #1 defense in the country who beat more Top 25 teams than the team you played in the "title game"...... Also looks incredibly suspect when: 1. TCU is the only team in NCAA history to go undefeated and get jumped out of the national title game by two lower ranked teams. 2. The entire season was incredibly suspect in how it was determining rankings, sos, and strength of teams Auburn jumped TCU when they beat FCS Chatanooga at home by 28. Yet the same week TCU beat #6 Utah on the road by 40. You wanna explain the logic behind that? In fact name a time in the last 50 years an SEC team beat a top 10 team by 40 points and didnt move in the rankings? Thats pretty suspect.... Everyone talks about SOS, yet in 09 TCU literally went undefeated and higher SOS than UT, yet it didnt matter. Even more questionable is how the f&ck SOS was even being measured anymore when San Jose State in 2010 was ranked 129/131 teams in SOS even though they played 50% of the teams that would finish in final rankings in the Top 10 in addition to two more Top 20 games. 5 of the 7 Top 25 games they played were on the road, and yet somehow 100+ teams played a tougher schedule than them? TCU wasnt the only aggrieved party that season. What truly mind boggling is how Boise State dropped in the rankings BEFORE THE EVER LOST. BSU entered the 2010 season on a 25 game winning streak, yet they dropped in the rankings when they won 30 consecutive games. And who jumped them? Oregon. A team that has NEVR IN THE HISTORY OF THE SPORT ever beaten BSU, and in fact were 2 of the 30 wins Boise State had up to that point. Id love to know logic of that especially considering the fact that Boise State ranked #2 in offense, #2 in defense and #1 in margin of victory on the year. BSU didnt even make a bowl game somehow despite having a better record, better stats, head to head wins and even outranking 5 TEAMS THAT DID (literally beat teams that made bowls over them, cuz f&ck logic)...... And this is the season you really want to claim an undisputed title?

  • This game marked the end of SO MANY eras: • The end of the USC dynasty of the mid-2000s. • The end of the original BCS era; college football would go to a BCS+1 format until 2013, then form the CFP in use today. • The end of ABC Sports’ telestial brand of college football; they’d outlet ESPN’s college football services beginning the following season and has been this way since. • Final game called by the legendary Keith Jackson; he retired after this game (and has sadly passed on). Dan Fouts would go-full duty to the NFL after this game, partnering with Ian Eagle at CBS until recently.

My Michigan siblings still don't understand why my allegiance is so strong, but they don't live here. This was the game that brought it home for me. Slightly off topic, I heard on sports radio before the game that a contingent of both teams happened to be at Disneyland at the same time. They recognized each other but had their game faces on. No communication. A cold war. But it was Young who went over and introduced himself, called the other Longhorns over to shake hands with the Trojans, and after that everything was chill. When we arrived in Pasadena I was able to sell the rest and ended up making $2,000. Had I waited to sell them at the stadium, I would have killed it. People were offering $1,000 for single tickets!
