  • I think it’s a great video. I also think the uptake of this building method will depend on how ecologically sound the material preparation ,is it quicker to build than current methods and how effective the insulation is . All round it looks pretty good !

    • Electrical and plumbing is added when the interior walls are built. In other words the plumbing, electrical, and HVAC is put in the void between the blocks and the interior finished wall and ceiling. For this home that is. For other structures I've seen, they cut channels in the fiber cement and foam, after the concrete infill set to make room for the components before rendering the walls and ceilings. The scope of the project, materialsadded to the structure (heavy roofing tiles, a second floor, etc., etc.,), local and/or national codes and regulations dictate how utilities can be added without reducing the integrity of the building.     • I guess you would cut into the woodfiber part. It is in principle just a mould for the concrete. Or you would just screw or nail it to the woodfiber and plaster over it.

    • These days you can get pre-fab concrete and timber with electrical, water and heating conduits fitted. On site construction like this is increasingly getting squeezed by pre-fab..

  • Woodwool, the basic of the Isotex system, was the wonder material of the 1970's that fell out of favour especially when it was shown to deteriorate badly when saturated as the cement was washed out leaving wet, loose wood shavings . This system only uses woodwool as the formwork so the structure will be sound but the woodwool will crumble around the concrete when wet. I can think that that will be a PITA to rectify!

  • Looks great, what we don't see is before these blocks and panels are delivered. Doesn't matter what you do, it's going to cost about the same. Some easier on the job, some not so easy. That block one, with the grey foam is incredibly labor intensive, laying, bending, tying all that rebar, pouring all that concrete.

  • Just great, a house full of osb and closed cell foam. When you have a house-fire, evacuate the neighborhood due to contaminated air.

    • Closed cell foam can be made IFR, so fire isn't that big of an issue. The Isotex (first one) the structure of the block is wood fibers and cement so no need to worry about that burning. Normally i shit all over the gimmicky building ideas, but I was actually impressed by the Isotex and the concrete fill going in the block.

    • @@stillToxed2loss Styrene poisoning probability is about the same as driving in your car with an insulated cooler in the back. So not really and issue unless your a hypochondriac who reads comment sections. The composite wood outer shell for the first one is wood fibers mixed with cement, think aircrete with the foam replaced by wood fibers. The second one is just OSB you find in every house in the US, its even in your house.

  • As a structural engineer i'd like to know how you get sufficient bending capacity without reinforcement in the second build shown, especially with no mortar or glues between the pieces. I would not use this in a location with earthquakes or strong winds. Does it just rely on gravity of heavy things on top? Doesn't seem very robust to me.

    • I saw some screws being used and they just didn't emphasis how many were actually used. Still, I preferred the first construction with the concrete and rebar.

    • I share your findings. I do not have experience in areas of an earth quake zone, but strong winds we have once in a while. My friend built a bungalow on the north shore of lake Erie, from the Swedish composite blocks, and the structure is with no problem so far. On the upper second idea, I noticed, that they did not use too great of a span, I think max 12'.

    • Most of the material I've seen, handled before and when it gets wet, the damage is nasty. Compressed wood alone doesn't stand a chance against moisture or water line breaks during winter freezes. JMO

    • Same thing when using osb when constructing a regular house it gets wet until you cover it up. I like the 1st method of isotex. No wood seems very secure and fire retardant.

    • @@user-vo1ll7so9d Не могу сказать. Практики не было. Наверно зависит еще от степени заражения местности грызунами. Когда грызунов очень много, а жить им негде, они устраивают себе норки и гнезда везде где только можно. Грызут всё подряд. Кроме стекловаты и кирпича с бетоном. А вот арболит - смесь дерева и бетона - не знаю, насколько им по вкусу.

    • @@user-vo1ll7so9d в арболите мыши не живут В средней полосе 30см арболита с головой. В первом варианте арболит выходит просто как дешёвый прочный каркас для пенополистирола, т.к. пенополистирол не даст ему дышать

  • Seems like a good alternative to stick frame construction. Insulated Concrete Forms (ICF) are much stronger and fire resistant than this though.

    • Seems like it would be at least 20% More expensive to build. Just at a glance. A lot of rebar. Concrete. Those blocks can't be cheap.. and even a pumpkin concrete truck is more than regular type

    • @@D.Guitar I think that is more for a commercial building. Labor costs in first world countries is tremendous so factoring on that cost being reduced big time it is likely a good option.
