  • Enjoyed Cruella so much more than I expected. I was just constantly terrified something bad would happen to her dog - I even paused it and finished later because I was just like, nope, can’t handle anything happening to that dog. Also, I don’t mind how the Disney Villain movies make you empathize with the villain. Almost nobody *actually* views themself as the bad guy. From their own perspectives, people usually rationalize their own behavior. Many of the most notoriously evil people in history legitimately convinced themselves they were in the right - even if they’re outright lying to themselves.

    @SarahIngleOfficial@SarahIngleOfficial2 жыл бұрын
    • Except most evil people takes pleasure in their vile deeds and some are aware that they're doing things wrong but don't care about it and takes pride in it.

      @davidbrennan3967@davidbrennan39672 жыл бұрын
    • True, but for Cruella it doesn't work. What made her such a good villian was how pure evil and sadistic she was, and while you can give a villian a sympathetic backstory and still have them turn out horribly evil, they didn't seem to do that here. They completely changed Cruella into a completely sympathetic character. The problem, imo, isn't that they gave her a sympathetic backstory, but that they didn't do it in a WAY that works for Cruella. And the fact that it doesn't seem to tie completely into 101D is unsatisfying and confusing. If they were going for an AU angle, they did a poor job, because it doesn't feel like that. It feels like they wanted to make a canon backstory for the original Cruella, but that they accidentally wrote too many things into the story that didn't completely line up. And I mean this just as far as character development moreso than actual events, which SHOULD be the most important part of a story, the part that drives it. A character driven story is better written than one driven by a plot driven one. What I mean is the characters should drive the plot, the plot shouldn't drive the characters. My point is that since the original 101D was such a well-written story, character development drove the story (not as much as it could have but well enough) and it's super important to the story, so if what seems like it's supposed to be a prequel doesn't have character development that lines up, it's pretty jarring.

      @lloyddragon2036@lloyddragon20362 жыл бұрын
    • @@davidbrennan3967 yes, and that's exactly what made Cruella such a good villian. Often you want your villian to be truly evil and extremely hateable, because it gives the story more of an edge; it makes the stakes feel higher and hating the villian more gets you more invested in the story and more on the heros' side, which is usually (especially in movies) a good thing. It can add to the story and make it MORE compelling to give the villian more depth, but if their evil nature is stripped away or diluted in the process, the story becomes less compelling and the villian feels less iconic. At the same time, a story with a flat, cliche villian who does things just because can be boring, which is why writing characters is so complex, and it's super important to have a balance when writing them, which is a different type of balance depending on the role they play in the story. Villians should be interesting but still evil. A balance should have been struck between making Cruella sympathetic and evil, which is totally possible (you can even look to real life for examples of this; most of the most evil serial killers had tragic childhoods, but still turned out to be completely evil people), but the new Cruella obviously failed to strike that balance and in making Cruella sympathetic, they nearly took away the fact she's a villian at all.

I didn't mind them giving Cruella a sympathetic backstory, because in most cases no one is really born evil, it really comes down to what environment they grew up in, and for Cruella to turn out evil makes sense because she went through a lot as a kid. I think what could have fixed this movie the most is if Cruella actually killed the 3 dalmatians and made a coat out of them, it's a very small yet powerful change for the character. But i guess the fact that she thought of it shows that her ''Cruella'' side is crazy enough to maybe go through with it, if not now then sometime in the future aka in 101D movie.

  • The Cruella in this film, I see at least, is but a larvae in a cocoon. We have the groundwork. As she no doubt becomes the head of the newly named House of De Vil, she would have to adopt the same ruthless tactics as the Baroness to stay on top. Never mind money and power and fame are addicting and can irrevocably change a person. Thus the grand irony is that Cruella becomes the same woman the Baroness was. It's the natural course logic would take us. The stress of running a company and staying on top would leave to her becoming a chain smoking alcoholic while become more ruthless and impulsive. And her impulsiveness leads to her own downfall as she accidentally orchestrates her own undoing by having given Anita and Roger their signature dalmatians. That's how I see it at least.

  • I think we are only getting started with Cruella and that I think Disney was leaving it open ended for a sequel. My theory is that Cruella gave Roger and Anita puppies as blackmail in the future. Both are extremely useful to Cruella since Anita is a journalist and Roger is a lawyer. Giving them puppies will allow her to say or do anything she wants to them, just like when she burst into their house uninvited in 101 Dalmatians. and maybe at this point in the story Cruella wouldn't want to skin puppies but in 101 Dalmatians Pongo and Perdita are fully grown, giving Cruella time to settle in the rich life and eventually lust for that Dalmatian coat. With even this movie we see that she has short temper if she doesn't get what she wants, and if she gets the idea of a Dalmatian coat she will stop at nothing to get it. That is what I would like to see in a possible sequel.

  • I like to think about it as the start to everything. She has unresolved issues and she thought that getting revenge on the baroness would solve her problems And becoming a fashion designer would make her happy since it was her Dream. But that didnt happen, She started to take her anger on everyone else, slowly driving her friends away, being mean to the dogs as her obsession and PTSD progressed and Anita taking them from her in fear of something happening to them. Cruella is getting crazier over time And becoming the Cruella se know, being really obsessed with killing the dogs for real in a desperate attempt to free her mind from the trauma once again

  • This might be a farfetched theory of mine, But, what if...Cruella, Knew she was gonna ended up been just like her mother? I mean, she did not kill those dogs when she could have, maybe something happened while she was living in her New home, or Perhaps a extra event happened that made Cruella become her mother, kind of like in the horror game Mad Father (of course a Disney pg. version of course) at least I think, or maybe Cruella for just showing her mother, she's beneath Cruella, that she desired a clothing to indirectly taunt her mother evidence to the Insanity she would suffer at the end of the original 101 Dalmatians movie as well the 2000 Live action movie, I know, it might just me just Me making up in order to justify Cruella's Disney origin version of Batman and Joker, but, I try to come up with why did Cruella went insane and decided to try to murder 101 Dalmatians just for a jacket with they're skins

If only Disney could do it competently, and maybe start with a character that isn't already irredeemably evil, like the dark queen of the Unseelie, or a literal puppy murderer. Honestly I have no idea why no one at Disney could recognize what disastrous ideas these two movies were. It would require ALOT more creative freedom to make either concept work than Disney would ever be willing to give someone allowed to handle one of their precious IPs.

  • I want to disagree with some of your views. I find it a love note to the other versions of Curella. Also Disney has a bad track record of having star animals in a movie, and making real world problems because people want a pet based from their love of a movie animal. A concern i had previously before the movie was that Curella would be a glorified Villian who people would want to emulate, but instead i was given a well made story that was entertaining and i think it is a wonderful movie. If the movie had gone as predicted, i can understand it would be easier to make comparisons, but all the characters have intresting sides to them, and felt like people. I can agree the open is kinda week, for her childhood on the cinematography. But it isn't a "She was wronged" story. Since she was a child, she had aspirations of her own. I don't find her pandering for "repeatability" eather. We see she had lemons and chose to make lemonade and a gown from the skins. She rebukes her birth name and chose Curella in forging her own path, and i think ot was fun how they brought in elements from the other adaptations and the book.

Because in the opening scene of Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas, everyone of the village came to the castle to celebrate Christmas with Belle and Prince Adam, but I think that only LeFou and Gaston's "buddies" do not attend the Christmas party in film due they are the only ones in the village who remained faithful to Gaston and his "legacy".

  • So first off, I do not love this new Cruella, and I definitely hoped for something, someone I could truly hate. I wanted a villain that was mad, evil, dark, and dangerous. I had really high hopes for this movie especially after the trailers kept that personality going. I had to watch this a least five times before I came to accept the fact that in this movie Cruella was not the same as we all have seen her before. However I do like this movie, and I will tell you why, but first I had to drop all other connections with her other movies, not to mention the trailers they gave her. If you can do that, I believe this was a good movie. It had parts that made me laugh, one being the interaction between Jasper and Cruella. It was fun to see him react to her madness. I have come to appreciate the way he stays with her, as I know how hard that can be with first hand experience. The way he cares for her and his own intelligence was something I love watching. Another thing I liked was the new character Artie, his brilliance mixed with Cruella’s own was very cool to see. I like the way she treated him, and the way he reacted to her. He seems to be able to push her where Jasper and Horace can not. I find their interactions funny to watch, and the way he smiles it is like he was made from mischief. One last thing I can not push down is the gowns Cruella did wear when trying to upstage the Baroness. They were beautiful, and really showed off strokes of brilliance. Was the movie what I was expecting? No. It most certainly was not. Do I like the way it played out in the timeline? No. I really do not (they crashed, and burned there). Do I hate it? No. I don’t. It was a good movie. It didn’t fit in well with the others, and I think they could have done so much better. They could have given us a villain to hate. However, if I gave it an honest opinion, (one where I am not putting it up to her other movies). I think it was good, and not lying; I did enjoy the movie.

If this is meant to precede the events of the movie, it's impossible to exist on the same timeline. 101 Dalmatians is canonically confirmed to take place in the year 1958.
