Why did I choose to switch away from Sony after using it professionally on all my personal shoots for the last two years? It comes down to a few things. One, glass. Two, feel of the body. And Three, I am in the enviable situation where I have access to a full kit from Nikon, Canon and Sony. This video will help me explain why I made the switch.

  • Since filming this video back in early March, I’ve continued to choose the canon R3 over the Sony a1. And as of now, I’ve made the switch away from Sony over to the Canon R3. This video explains the reasons why I’ve made that choice.

    • I understand, switching systems from time to time keeps a channel interesting, and kind-of brand agnostic. If a youtuber is associated with just one single brand for too long, he would be perceived as a brand ambassador. From that we can predict, that the next system switch is due in 2 or 3 years time again 😉 Now we can place our bets: will the next switch be to Sony again, or to Nikon?

    • Totally agree - in the UK, the Canon prices are more in £ than the $ price in the US! eg the R5 is £4300 ($5598) in the UK, $3899 in the US. Fortunately the adaptors work very well so I use my excellent EF glass.

  • I certainly appreciate the EVF recordings. Has been a major boost in my own work, and has been the most accurate way to see how you work on framing, how you anticipate the actions, how you move about the setting to get the moment. Not a lot of people do it and it has been a major educational tool. A lot of photographers can say, frame this, frame this, but otherwise it's impossible to see those micro movements that really make the difference between something Ok and something great.

  • This video has everything in it that shows why I like your channel for photography videos compared to others. You’re not pretentious. Your videos are fun. You are open and honest about what you think of the gear available. You don’t seem to have a blind(or paid) allegiance to any one brand, and on top of all of that your videos are always informative and useful. That being said. It’s Canon right now, and it’s because of the glass. They don’t have much and you can’t get a lot of third party with autofocus(though the Samyang is surprisingly fantastic), but what they do have is really incredible. Not really a bad choice either way, though, to be honest.

  • Once again I learned so much watching Mr. Polin and Mr. Eckert and the “FroKnowsPhoto” family and group. My first, and last camera, was a Canon AE1 that I bought in 1979 from “The Camera Bag”, a family owned camera shop in Hillsboro Oregon. At 63 I’m not looking to be a professional photographer, that ship sailed a number of years ago. At 63, HOWEVER, I am extremely interested in switching from a film camera to a DSLR. Would it be possible, or maybe you already have, to do a dumbed down version for us old folks that bought AE cameras and learned to use them only in manual mode, so we have an idea where to start? I refuse to be a “PHONE PHOTOGRAPHER”! I have a few brain cells left and would like to use them before I die. Peace! Mike

  • Thanks for the tip about carry-on camera gear and the battery rule! For what I mostly do, everyday carry, street photography, and hiking to shoot landscapes, the Canon and all that beautiful glass is just too big and heavy! The small, light Sony with some of the more compact wide to normal lenses available (like that 35mm f/1.4) is just a dream to carry all day.

    • A7 IV user here. Came from the Z6 II. I like the boost in resolution, dislike the loss of low light performance. I do like the video quality (10-bit 4:2:2). I have constant focusing issues with it the Sony. It cant focus in low light and I could NOT lock focus on the horizon for a sunset shot. Lastly, the camera froze 3 times in the first day of owning it. I couldn't shut it off, go into the menu. Oh, and twice it would NOT take pictures. It just would not. Needless to say, the Sony is getting returned. Z9 is being added and a Z6 III will complement it. I don't get whats so "great" about Sony. I had trust issues on its reliability, I gave it a chance and my worries were legit. Frozen. Decent focus. Failure to shoot. Mehh

I notice a lot of comments about the expense of the RF glass, but I’ve found a pretty happy medium. I jumped into the Tamron 2.8 trinity and am perfectly happy with the results. Focus breathing does suck on the 70-200, but the quality of the shots I’m getting with these zooms coupled with some of the less expensive primes is FANTASTIC! I’m sure moving to the RF zoom lineup will be a big upgrade, but I didn’t have to spend a ton to get a lot of good glass with some incredible results!

The issues you pointed out were too much for me to switch from the EF that I can zoom with my thumb. The RF required me to grip the ring and twist surprisingly hard. Terrible decision by Canon. • @kulmmii If you shrink the 33mp file to a 24mp file, the images have less noise. It's the way it works. It is faster than the a7iii, better buffer, better auto focus, faster card slots..... So your comment is completely false. The sensor scored better than the a7iii sensor in low light... Also, the a7iv has significantly better ergonomics, better LCD and EVF, better menu system etc. The a7iv just wasn't revolutionary like everyone wanted it to be. The a7iii was what put Sony mirrorless on the map and pretty much changed photography from DSLR to mirrorless.

      @RiposteThis@RiposteThis2 жыл бұрын
    • @kulmmii buddy you had a bad copy lol. My A7IV is miles better and faster than my A7III. Its a baby Sony A1. The live tracking autofocus never fails me on a wedding to absolute perfection. So you must have gotten a dut lmao. The R5 is not comparable to a A7IV because the R5 is specially way more expensive. The A7IV starts at $2,500. The R5 is in the near 5 thousand mark with lenses. Obviously it has to be better. The Canon R6 is the competitor.

      @johncastle95@johncastle952 жыл бұрын
    • @kulmmii I've had both too, and the z6ii and z7ii. The a7iv is faster in every regard, you can't use eye AF with 10fps on the a7iii, and the AF misses a lot in the hi and hi + modes. The small buffer and slower second card slot in the a7iii means you can barely get any shots off before filling the buffer, where as the a7iv you can get simul uncompressed raw until like 40 shots, lossless compress is around 80 before hitting buffer, and unlimited with CFExpress A no simul. I do agree with you, that the upgrade from a7iii to a7iv is not worth it unless you really want the little creature comforts, like the new ui, and 33mp to crop with. Other than that, image quality is basically the same, maybe slightly less dynamic range on the a7iii but nothing crazy. The a7iv does have significantly better video options though. 4k60 10bit 422 internal with unlimited clip length is really good, plus the gyro sensors allow for really good post processing stabilization using the Sony Cataylist software. But image quality vs image quality, there is no reason to switch. I do think the r5 is the best bang for the buck if you can afford the lenses though. It's an amazing camera and besides Canon's button layout, I think it's pretty much perfect. Tamron and Sigma allow me to get really fast glass at a fraction of the Sony glass price and I don't need an adapter, so that's why I swapped from Nikon to Sony.

I’ve grown to use the R3 for almost everything possible where I don’t need or want the highest resolutions. The ergonomics of the R3 are magnificent. The video is stellar. The autofocus is better than anything I’ve used, and the sensor performance slaps. Haha Everyone who complained about the R3’s resolution being lower was typically not a professional that comes home from a race week 2 or more times a month having to edit and deliver immediately on deadline after the race and have a gallery ready for clients in 24 hours or less. I tried to do this with the R5 after I sold the 1DXII and I ended up buying a new laptop and desktop to try and keep up. The R3 is a delight to own and use. I would love to see these camera gain the option to shoot a true pixel-binned RAW.

  • All mentioned systems are fantastic. I will personally go with the smaller size. I can take my A1 as a tourist on a getaway, and have fantastic pictures. I can the day after be a pro at the stadium with the same system. Thas is versatility and most important for me.

  • Very interesting choice. Over the last few years there has been a running debate on the camera resolution (20, 24, 50 MP) required by professional photographers. Finally, a decision that sometimes-other features may be the deciding point and that 24 MP is fine for professional use. Nice choice.

  • I think I will still go with A1 because of the megapixel, but Nikon Z9 is the best of them all, at least for now

  • Awesome. Shoot whatever works for you. People should shoot for themselves and their work; not to satisfy other peoples biases.

    • I don’t think what he’s doing here. The whole video was about how he was trying to decide what to use for work.
