He completely clears her of any wrongdoing, makes himself sound like a maniac, makes up lies to do this, and does it while showing that what he's saying is upsetting him. They even show Skyler realising what he's doing.

    • @@Ezret I remember when I saw this episode when it first came out it took me a moment to realise what was going on too. It was only when I started seeing the shocked look on Skyler's face, just standing there holding the phone silently as she clocks that something's up with the way Walt is talking, that I started questioning what I was seeing. She can tell something's not right about this call, even given the horrible situation and everything that's just happened. You really see on her face the very moment it dawns on her what he's actually doing. And then just after this moment, we also finally get to see Walt's face (till then we saw him speaking from behind), revealing the tears streaming and his entire demeanour that doesn't at all match the persona of the evil mastermind his voice is trying to project over the phone. It was really a masterclass in acting from both Anna Gunn and Bryan Cranston, truly one of the greatest exchanges ever in a TV show or even a film. And also some top tier genius level direction and editing too.

All this time, everything that's happened....it all just led up to this. Gus, Tuco, the corny twins......all distant memories, lol. • I have a theory about why Walt told Jesse that he watched Jane die, other than to show that he's gone so overboard with being Heisenberg that he would be needlessly cruel. After Hank was killed, I'm sure Walt began concocting his revenge. It became a part of his reason to continue living. He knew that Jesse was being put in a completely hopeless situation, so he had to give Jesse a reason to live. Or Walt is a manipulative sociopath who doesn't care who he hurts. Could be that, too.

That man is polite, but he has no soul… People are mad about the phone call, but it’s clear it’s not because you weren’t paying attention, it’s because you were in “I hate Walt he is the worst” mode this whole episode. • Aaaand another reactor doesn't get the phone call. It's so strange. Please rewatch the scene and you'll see the brilliant acting, I feel that some of the hate towards Skylar was real but the things he says didn't happen which was the tell that it wasn't real. He knew the police were there and recording. He nearly breaks down after what he says about Hank. You can also see the moment Skylar realizes what Walt is doing.

Many other people missed it too. You’re wrong about Walt though. Yes, it’s all gone off the rails but he loved Jesse and Jess betrayed him by working with Hank. It also led to Hank being killed and him losing all his hard earned money. Of course he wanted to hurt Jesse with the words about Jane. I still very much wanted Walt to come out in too at this point. I certainly didn’t hate him as you seem to do. I understood him.

  • Just thinking about the first few minutes. When we meet Walt in Season 1, we see things from his perspective. His pride is hurt left and right, and he has such frustrating arguments with Skyler and Walt Jr about things that don’t really matter. When he got into the meth business, he put a wedge between himself and the family he was trying to provide for, but since we don’t see this endearing scene between Walter and Skyler until right near the end, we really get to see the lovely simple joys of his family life that he took for granted and completely threw away.

Your failure to catch on to what Walt was trying to do with the phone call is more unusual, but still pretty understandable (It’s honestly surprising how few people miss what he’s doing, tbh). Your hope that Todd might actually have some kind of noble motives in keeping Jesse alive is frankly just bizarre.

  • Walt is awful, but the stuff he said on the phone was an act because he knew the police were3 listening and he wanted them to think he had abused and threatened her the whole time to keep her from going to the police, like he didn't given Skylar a choice so they won't think she wasn't complicit in the drug business he built. I would not have liked this episode as much at all if he had actually said those things because he believed them. Skylar knew that was what he was doing too, because it was always his biggest complaint when she got involved that she would be just as criminally liable as he is once she knew about it and chose to get involved instead of turning him in. The acting and looks on their faces during that scene are so good too, because you can see the moment she realizes what he is doing, and the pain its causing him to have to say those things to him when he knows it might be the last time they speak.

Walt got mixed up with real gangstas that didn't give a F, and he couldn't BS manipulate them like he could everyone else. I think then he realized that nothing was going to go his way, especially after Hank was killed right in front of him. Once he gave up all that money and Pinkman, he had absolutely no leverage left. His money was gone, as well as a cook that was almost as good as him method-wise.
