The most recent game between the two nations occurred on neutral ground in Geneva on 12 November 2005 when the two teams, having both already qualified for the 2006 FIFA World Cup, met in a friendly. Both teams selected strong sides. England twice came from behind to beat Argentina 3-2 with goals from Michael Owen from crosses by Steven Gerrard and Joe Cole in the dying moments. The result and performance were welcomed enthusiastically by the English press and public. The general nature of the match was also less intensely vitriolic than on previous occasions, with The Times reporting, "by the unpleasant standards of previous confrontations, the skirmish between England and Argentina edged towards the saccharine, although the concept is deeply relative. The latest encounter featured punches on the terraces, songs about the Falkland Islands, jibes regarding players' sexuality and general churlishness that, believe it or not, represents a significant thaw in diplomatic relations." England's victory was the first time either side had won consecutive matches against the other.
I am argentinian but I still cant get enough of this game watched it many times just a great game
Maradona cheated the first goal a hand ball goal in 1986 quarter finals 2-1 WC but suppose to be 1-1 then it’s anybody’s game in tiebreaker if it goes , then in 1998 WC 2-2 snd tie breaker gave them victory but a goal England scored were denied coz of a foul near Argentinaian goal post but that was a inconclusive decision by referee and if not England would had won 3-2 but Argentina luck continued with England again and later in 2002 World Cup onwards England’s luck started .
Sorry Mr Argentinian, Argentina won't lift a world cup again until the return of Jesus, Argentina is curse by Messi forever

Always some needle in these games with England and Argentina. Felt like a WC knock out game watching it in the Pub. I remember jumping around after Owen’s winner then only a couple of minutes later remembering it was a friendly 😂
Beckham was obsessed with trying to make the perfect pass. Soon as he passed it around a bit more we played better.
My friend you are speaking about the most overrated english player ever. For me the definition of opposite-gooing back football. He was supposed to be a righ attacking midfileder . THat means... Attack=ball control-dribble-speed and some defensive ability He HAD none of them. ONly the movement getting inside(left) was smart. Tacticly Ericson did a great false decision. He put him because of the quick righ line rodriguez and zanetti Gerrard . in front of Bridge instead of all Paul . Secondly Lampard instead of Gerrard. PUt GERRAD ON THE MIDDLE MAny easy goals from gerrard were lost because of Lampard's lowerest ashooting ability. Also Very slow play by lampard and he was starting always the offense. The only player that had through balls was Gerrard even from the left flank. example Rooney;s Crossbarr. Noone was using owen until the second more talented (attackingly speaking) got in...Joe cole. And also gerrard tried some passes. Gerrard attempted 2 crosses and one was goal. FOr me all the three players that got in were correct but i believe maybe the defensive haf King shouldnot go out but Frank not to mention he had yello card. Also to mention the very good job of the Keepers even if they ate 5 goals.
@@imkitsoularas Disagree. He was the bet crosser of the ball possibly ever. Real Madrid fans are notorious whingers who dislike 99% of their players, however, even they loved Beckham. That says it all for me. You can also see what Zidane thought of him. I trust his opinion over yours lol.
@@anthonyr587 My friend we agree to disagree. First of all, I prefer Ronaldinho and Messi instead of Zidane . I am a fun of Baggio and Del Piero rather than Zidane. The only thing i really liked about Zidane was the fact that he had no problem scoring with his weak foot.As for Beckham...who remembers the cross of Maradona Pele MEssi .or any cross...noone. Crosssing is very old thinking. And the proof is that premier league become the best league the last 7years only when many agile and dribbling players came. The only thing is that premier leauge didnt have any brazilian at the best team. At the some era players like Pedro,Hazar,SAne,MAne, Salah, Silva,Bernardo, played. I dont remember 15years ago premier league to have so much dribbling agility and quick football
@@imkitsoularas You are comparing Beckham to superheros. Messi, Maradonna, Pele, etc no one thinks he is that good, they are in the league of their own. Even Zidane who was close was not in that league. Beckham was always in the section under that, and he has a case for the best long passes and crosses in the game. Football has changed, but even the era you mentioned before they always crossed the ball and played with a different style. Go and have a look at Beckham assisting the real Ronaldo 9 at Madrid, that pass was unbelievable and it wasn't the only one he did. Beckham was a brilliant player in his era, but of course he is not Messi, Cristiano, Maradonna or Pele, I don't think you will find anyone saying he is.

Was it a friendly match? It's like a word cup match
It doesn't get better than this as far as a friendly match. Quality all over the pitch and a very competitive spirit. Riquelme and Argentina played brilliantly for most of the game. Riquelme was subbed off and England took control and took their chances. Owen was such a cold blooded finisher. One of the best I've ever seen. Injuries ruined him

One of our best wins, great game against a good side,Owen was a little assassin very underrated player.

Saludos.
This game highlighted to me, why Sven was fucking clueless. Gerrard was outplaying Lampard in terms of passing, attacking and defending and yet he was the one being shunted into different positions.
What about Joe Cole? More creative in all aspects and yet was wasted in the wing. Lampard constantly coughed the ball up…
Crazy to think we haven't played Argentina since this match (15 years and counting) be good to renew that old rivalry again
Shit I didn't know that, long time ago now.
It's not really a rivalry when it's so one-sided, Argentina knocking England out whenever they meet in the knockout stages. England should renew their rivalry with Scotland or Sweden as they can't really match the stature and the contributions of Brazil, Italy, Germany, Argentina, France, Spain, and Holland in modern football.
@@manusiaganteng2753 Holland have been awful the last decade. They didn't even qualify for the last world cup, and they have never won a single trophy. England got help from the officials to win their only trophy in history after all haha. Sorry to disappoint you, not from India! Better luck next time
@@manusiaganteng2753 Nonsense, he barged Owen's hip and immediately put his hands up because he knew it. Secondly, that Sol Campbell goal was perfectly fine, yet the referee decided to disallow it. Roa mistimed his jumped, missed the ball and it was a simple header in. Thirdly, sending Beckham off for a tap that wouldn't have even bothered a 3 year old girl. Typical Simeone with his dive, his Atletico team is equally as nasty with their style as well. With a name like yours you are from a country that's contributed nothing to football most likely. Let alone created the game like England did. We never claim to be the best team in the world but it's difficult when we are having to play referees every single tournament alongside the opposing team. The only time I can remember we lost with no complaints was against Croatia, we got beaten by a better team. No problems and the officials stayed out of it.
