Restoring A Left-For-Dead Junkyard Square Body Tow Truck
From the junkyard to the boulevard, our guys are towing the line because it’s all about second chances for a 1977 Chevy C-30 tow truck!
In what started its life off as a rusted-out reject in the junkyard, Carcass saw the beauty in this unique old wrecker body tow truck. Not only did it have the patina square body look, but of all the vehicles in the lot, it also had the most charm. Despite winning over the guys and checking every item off on their list, there was a lot of work to be done. The objective was to take on the challenge of finding something that was deemed “junk” and making it road-worthy.

Brings back a lot of memories. In the late 80s, I bought a 79 GMC 1 ton wrecker with a Holmes 440 on the back from a salvage yard that was being used to move vehicles around, It was in a pretty rough condition but after I got through with it, there was a GM crate 350 under the hood and a wheel lift on the back. The bed had been cleaned and the body repaired and then painted white. A push bumper with grill protection added to the front and the interior redone. I bought the truck as an addition for my shop to pull vehicles that did not run to the shop. I ended up getting added to the city and county and state lists to pull wrecks and others, mostly DUIs. I could tell a lot of stories tied to that restored wrecker but that would take way too long. When I decided to scale back my shop, I made sure she went to a good home. Sad to see her go!
My dad had a new cab and chassis in 81,wore out the 454 and we dropped an LS6 crate 454 in it,and it was a monster...
Hard to believe these old tow trucks could do their job with a 305!
Nice work on restoring the truck, but you definitely lost me at replacing the manual trans with an auto. #SaveTheManuals!
swap it yes but with a t56 not a auto lol
@@aidenog7380 The tr4050 is the transmission you swap too. Saves a granny gear and gives an OD. I am in the process of saving a 87 K30.
That PTO winch would have lasted another 50 years. I'd have kept it with the manual transmission.
All old trucks deserve a second chance. Good deal guys Edit: this show needs to be an hour long, at least Btw you should have left the manual trans in
if you want to see it the full build is uploaded either here or on power nation 2 channel
This is just old episodes chopped up. Why do yall do this to us?
That's all I need to know
Because they make more money fro KZhead
Jimmy not looking like Mr. Clean should clue you in.
Why not
Because they want you to pay for motor trend channel on cable, and not gonna do it lol
I just loved the days when you could see the ground on each side of the engine
My dad bought a cab and chassis one ton new in 81,and spent 5 years wearing out the 454 pulling backhoes all over Houston... We dropped an LS6 crate motor in it, and with the 4.11 gears and 4 speed it was a monster for back then lol
Miss Osborne is looking pretty good !!
Hey, I watched this a few years ago! Whats with the repeat?
Chop chop chop n slapped. Talked smooth like Japanese lantern dealers.
Excellent video also tow truck come handy for lots stuff and useful too!
Wondered what happened to KO. Very nice to see she is still around.
This is a rerun
Wait youre telling me this is not live?
I knew it!!!
There's just something special about an old tow truck!👍
Brilliant job on truck guys,, FairPlay,,,
Someone tried closing that hood from the side, and you can always tell lol Them trucks had real hood springs...
Love the folding hood.
Long live Chevy Small Block!
Nice !!! Graiting from argentina 🇦🇷🇺🇸
Well it was nice to see Kaite again.
When you replace what's probably a rock crusher with an auto...
I'd have kept the manual. I'd have z cut that frame and added a reinforcement plate before I even towed a Civic with it.
grease the ball joint looked like tie rod too me
The aluminum wheels looked great on there. Why did you take them off?
👍Happy New Year 🎉🎆
Great deal
The fact it has 6 good aired up tires is a bit misleading
No cleaning the steel before welding??
Check Tommy's brake lines😂
How bout that engine just purring when absolutely nothing was done to it in years lol
Definitely wouda went air bags instead of all those springs, especiallt after hacking the frame anyway...
9:33. No guard on an angle grinder with a cutting wheel ? Yowza.
Mussel truck tow truck edition
MY GOD!!!! WHERE YALL GET THEM HAIR CUTS BOYS???
When money no objects
Could have saved some money on the spaz box and elastictrikery winch ?
Anyone notice the bad frame rot at 15:12
How much
Not sure why they made automatic and got rid of the problem winch for an electric winxh.
👍👍🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏👍👍
gonna be the best build yet
Clearly your new to this channel
Not even close.
Rerun
Isn’t this like 3 years old?
They never said why they cut the back off the tow bed and rebuilt it with new steel? Never understood why every rebuild show always chucks the pto winches for electric winches. Easier to work with an auto I guess.
How rude, to take that truck, breath new life into it then say "it's just not worth it" is a kick in the chassis!
You should compete in the off road wrecker games with youtube.com/@MattsOffRoadRecovery?feature=shared !!
@mattsoffroadrecovery
I seen this on TV like 5 or 6 years ago. This isn't new and I doubt they are still on the show, or if there is even still a show.
Go watch vice grip garage.
I'm sorry but i'm one minute in and i have seen this already, you cut the back of the frame off and put on new steel, replace the winch as well as replace the very back of the wrecker bed; have a described enough of the build yet? i think i did so i wont be watching this video any more. thank you and have a great day! I know I will!
so, then, fill in the blanks... $ invested, vs selling price
Thats all??
4x2 for a tow truck ? Wtf
You should have been video last year why do you have to put it again
“Could’ve should’ve would’ve“ I love it, but I think it would have been cooler to keep a manual transmission and refresh the PTO winch. I also think the door logo could have been done a little bit more dated to match the rest of the patina… It will eventually.
Why would you guys swap out the stick for an automatic? And why do you keep referring to plain old rust as desirable patina? Rust is rust is rust and rust looks like shit.
"Not worth restoring" is the most agitating thing ive heard the script writers write. I hate scripted shows
2024 and these guys still seem awkward together, great content but different cast might help
Another rehash, come on now 😵💫
Just swapping out parts. Dont like it at all. Should kept engine, transmission and winch.
MAGA one square body at a time.
So they married the engine and transmission with an impact?🙃
Bullshit..... that yard is private.....And Tenn....so you not getting anything out that yard if you are black
Staged much?
Why keep repeating the same episode 👎👎👎👎 You just cost yourself a subscriber
That's not a motor , it's an Engine. That truck is not Electric.
Tell that to General Motors!
What then do you call a Motorcycle?
@@garyslentzii2796 i call it a bike.
@@TowMater603 You peddle a bike
You better tell General MOTORS to change their name to General ENGINES, and Ford MOTOR Company to change theirs to Ford ENGINE Company then. Derrr
A recycled episode 👎
