Heavy Lift - An-225: The Antonov Dream | Engineering Documentary
Manufacturing an Airbus A350: • Giant Aircraft: Manufa...
The Antonov An 225 Myra was the world's largest plane, and only one example was ever built. Exclusively filmed in the Antonov factory in Kiev, this documentary tells the story of the development of the aircraft on the basis of the worlds second largest plane, the An 125. The Myra was built to carry Russia's version of the Space shuttle - the Buran. All this of course before the break-up of the Soviet Union.
The program features exciting walk-around footage of the Mrya and interviews with the engineers who built it. We take the viewer back to the days when carrying military equipment far and fast was the key to success in a potential third world war. That conflict never happened but since the collapse of the Soviet Union and the rise of an independent Ukraine, the Antonov desiogn bureau and factory, and Antonov Airlines company have provided some of the most impressive transport over the last decade, contracted by governments to move emergency relief supplies, military equipment and industrial parts.

    • Unfortunately, friends, this plane is already history, you are too late with the video. Ukrainian defense industry concern Ukroboronprom reported that as of the morning of February 24, 2022, the aircraft was under repair and maintenance work at the Antonov Company site in Gostomel, one of the engines was removed for repairs, and the aircraft could not fly out on that particular day, although the appropriate commands were given in conditions of an armed conflict with the Russian Federation. As a result, the aircraft, which was in a hangar at Gostomel airport, was destroyed during the fighting for Antonov airport. We don't have the Mriya anymore. 😭🇺🇦

    • The technology is quite ancient. This video mentions how it is not environmentally friendly (not that this is too important for a one off like this). It might be more feasible for Boeing or Airbus to modify the B747 or A380 somehow as a mega carrier, or design a completely new aircraft for the task. The problem is that there is probably not a market for a fleet of them. To produce only one, or even a very small fleet, exponentially increases the design cost per aircraft. Maybe Antonov can combine the damaged plane and the second unfinished one and get the An-225 back in the air.
