I have often wondered over the last 10-15 years if that’s a lesson teachers are even allowed to teach anymore! I don’t know that we have ever lived up to those goals, but I always believed it was possible. I pray that it is still a possibility! Thank you for reminding me of who we have the potential to be in an ever darker world. All of us are transplanted here from elsewhere (except native Americans). It’s the height of hypocrisy to pull up the drawbridge behind us and snarl at the people who only want what the rest of us want: a safe place to live, a steady job, clean food and water, education for their children, and an opportunity to work hard and possibly achieve the American dream. The more varied our backgrounds, the more perspectives we have to consider when approaching a problem. I believe our differences really do make us stronger. I am glad you’re here and I pray that you have opportunities to live up to the poem in your own life!

An N-400 is an application for an ADULT to become a US citizen straight away. Unaccompanied children simply can't file one. And even if they could, those applications don't go to a consulate; they go to USCIS. Still, the point is generally right that immigration bureaucracy is RIDICULOUS, especially when it comes to children.

    @jamesnichols5998@jamesnichols599817 күн бұрын
    • I do believe it was simply a joke about how difficult immigration is, and how a child on their own would struggle. They used all adult forms as far as I can tell, probably as part of the joke. I'm sure such young children aren't meant to fill out forms themselves, but obviously there actually is a lot of bureaucracy that makes the process difficult, but explaining well the kid would need someone assigned to them and likely a translator as well, they'd need to be present for these forms but not these blah blah blah. Having the child take the adult route because they're on their own still works in the joke, but you're right it could have been more accurate and informative.

He had to make up that kids come to the border alone just so he can make fun of people concerned about the border. Also, immigration is not a matter of opinion. It’s simply math. We can’t sustain this rate. Countries have to act like a restaurant when it comes to immigration. You have to have a reservation, no you can’t just come into out restaurant when all the tables are full and sit on the floor and eat. U have to wait to we set up more tables and get more waiters to serve you. Any restaurant that just let anyone come in and eat at the same time would be out of business tomorrow.

    • The US needed to fill in its New Lands and therefore welcomed immigration. The industrial revolution was also in need of workers to run the machines…and provide profit effective cheap labor…while creating more consumers for a capitalistic society…each reason filling the oligarch bank accounts with inconcievable profit numbers. But this World has never been based upon "No Borders/No Boundaries", which is in ideal only...and history seems to concur that any massive influx of culture can drastically affect an existing culture's norms and delineate the effectiveness of assimilation...while also impacting resources and creating fiscal and societal deficiencies. In this state of emergency…xenophobia will accelerate as indigenous people do not cope well with rapid changes to their established way of life. And is it ever in fairness to have one group cut in front of anther group in line, especially. when the latter group is law abiding? And Logically, when does a Nation decline mass immigration or is it always to be an open door policy….which could be detrimental to an established society. A historical example: Ask the Native Americans, who lost their culture and lands with mass immigration…some may say for the better, but the alcohol abuse may signal a different opinion.

They had five sons. One was born in New York the other four in Detroit. One died in childhood, one became a lawyer, one became a world known cartoonist, one owned a livery stable, and the youngest became a teacher. It's not that our country doesn't want Mexicans, Colombians, Brazilians, etc. It's that the wave they're coming in illegally is INSANITY. We pay over 180 billion a year caring for and taking care of illegals, they pay nothing back into the system other than some sales tax for things they purchase. Imagine throwing a pizza party and you and your buddies pitch in and buy all the food and drinks and whatever else. Then a couple people show up you didn't invite and start eating and drinking. No big deal. Now they tell their friends that there's free pizza over here. When the pizza is all gone they ask around for more pizza. Now people at the party are looking at you like you're crazy for not supplying more pizza and drinks for everybody else. This is the USA we live in now.

    • P.s. a major problem in it is also "bleeding heart liberals" as we tend to put it. For instance in one variation: yes, it's absolutely awful to let a boat full of illegal immigrants drown when it's either that or take them in. But in doing so, you open the back door, which means more people get on rickety boats. And even if you pick up most, you'll regularly fail. Many will drown. Their smugglers make a big payday while being criminals with absolute power over their charges, so severe abuses happen. Thus, callousness does an awful thing once. "Mercy" prevents it once, and causes it over and over again. That has to be part of the equation.

  • As a liberal who lives in Arizona I get both sides of the story. I have compassion for immigrants but I also understand the logistical problems with taking in an unlimited number of people who have nothing but the clothes on their backs and that has nothing to do with the color of their skin. The small city I live in is already stretched thin to take care of its own poor and unfortunate. Food banks are already overwhelmed, schools are running on thin budgets, employment is limited and so on. It's easy to pass judgment from your mansion in the Hamptons but when you're on ground zero the view changes. Will you send us money to help take care of immigrants? If not then your opinions mean nothing in the harsh light of reality.

    • I agree with you, we need to have 'limited' immigration and it is unfair to legal immigrants to allow large numbers of illegal immigrants to cross our border. I don't think a long fence across mountains, rivers, etc. is the answer. I think we could enforce the border with electronic devices and help from military using drones with cameras, etc.

    • so am I understanding your point correctly? money is more important than people? are you claiming that America is not big enough or rich enough to support all of these migrants (aka Illegal immigrants)? maybe the answer should be for greedy entitled & extremely wasteful natural born American citizens to tighten their belts.

    • 😂 The de-dollarization is rising, the petrodollar system is over (The US wanna keep printing money like decades ago, but they can't, the world has changed now.) The US (300 million people) want to be competitive in this new world with china (1300 million people). 1300 million people of which, a part of them lead the technological advances in the world, another part of them are the most hardworking, productive and CHEAP workforce of the planet. In every home in the world you can find at least 10 items that say: Made in China. How many items with the phrase: Made in the USA you can find in your home..? The US economy must be competitive. Must be productive. How they gonna achieve that if a flipburger boy in McDonalds earn the same as a doctor in other 125 countries of the world? And they say they want manufacture industry come back to america 😂😂 Then, when inmigrants come into their country to give them the cheap manufacturing tool. The americans see them as a burden😂😂😂 For worse.... They don't wanna have childrens anymore, because is too expensive take care of them. So their population don't grow enough to keep the economy runing. Look at Canada. The concerts full of old people. You said.... It's not about color of skin. OF COURSE EVERYTHING IS ABOUT COLOR OF SKIN.!! Like Trump said. We need people from sweden, Finland, ... those inmigrants are welcome. Dou you see Finish people cutting fish meat in a Factory in Florida? 😂😂 I don't know what americans are gonna do to save their declining nation. (I am for sure that they are not gonna work hard as chinese do making shoes of any other product in factories) Maybe another war. Is the only thing they know to do..

    • This is the truth and people don't want to hear about the real problems with illegal immigration, they just want to point a finger at others and scream do more so they can say "see I did something" and then go back to their lives.

  • Regarding "No Irish need apply", a few years back a US based historian claimed that these signs were an urban myth. A child student was able to find numerous instances in news papers from the early 1900s, and the practice had been common for quite some time by that point. Technically, this sign mostly applied to Irish Catholics, as many Protestants migrated in the 1700s, and apparently 1/4 of the European population of the 13 colonies was Scots Irish by 1776. Many Catholics were brought over from the 1650s onward as (supposed) indentured servants, but when you're not provided with the option to say no, it wasn't much different to slavery for the women and girls brought over as wives for settlers.
