Henry was caught over 120 years ago, already a maneater thus of a prodigious size. Now he is the oldest living croc in the world... that we know of. From Crocwatch with Steve Backshall

  • We had a gator at the Weapons Station in Goose Creek SC. His name was Charlie. He lived in a small fenced area. He lived there only because he chose too, as he was well fed with roadkill from the Weapons Station. He was about 18’ long. Took a group of Brit dignitaries to see him as we left the area for the airport. They were all gathered near the fence only a meter or so away. I stayed back about 4 or 5 meters. They asked why, so I told them. Explained he wasn’t chained or held in that little chain link fenced area by anything but his good will. They took off like a shot!

I know for a fact Pandas would go extinct in the wild. If not for zoos participating in Ex-situ conservation Harpy Eagle populations would be in a far worse state than they are now. I know this because I am in the earth sciences in university and had to do a bunch of research on this topic.

      @TerraStory225MYA@TerraStory225MYA2 ай бұрын
    • @@TerraStory225MYA It's very easy to research the subject but yes I am in the conservation field. And as I stated only 16% are endangered species. Animals in zoo's suffer depression, anxiety, rage. They can't act on their instincts, they can't mate as they would in the wild, they can't hunt as they would and the stress of thousands of people around them all the time is very harmful. All of this is very easy to research. The stats are out there. The fact of the matter only a small portion of zoo's are actually helping species.

  • Henry is amazing. I have one to three alligators on my property in Florida and I love to watch them grow. There’s usually a half dozen babies and out of them maybe one lives to be an adult. But they are from a foot long to 6 or 7 feet. They’d be a snack for Henry. 🐊

    • What do the babies die from. Is it the adults or birds or accidents? That's really special that you can watch those life cycles play out on your property.

  • For those curious, crocs becoming maneaters can be as simple as living near places with sickness outbreaks, really bad flooding disturbing cemeteries, or even major building projects. They used to result in a lot of dead bodies that werent easy to get rid of and the crocs may just help themselves passively.

The last I heard he was living in a Croc Farm in Mombassa, Kenya. I saw him back in 1992 when they said he was a minimum of 75 years old. It would be great if anyone could confirm for certain if he's still alive and what age and weight he is now!

  • A little curiosity. The oldest known living alligator is in the Belgrade Zoo, named Muya. He was brought to Belgrade back in 1937 as an adult animal, so he is certainly over 90 years old. In 2012, Muya's front leg was amputated due to the "old age" gangrene that appeared. Muya miraculously survived the German bombing of Belgrade in April 1941, when the entire zoo was destroyed. Only survivors from the zoo were the hippo Buca (Chubby) and Muya.
