Like other birds, taming is one process that may prove to be hectic if not done correctly. Correcting a mistake done during taming is way more challenging and more expensive than you can imagine.
How do I tame my weirdo bird cockatiel :) ?
- Get a young cockatiel
- Be gentle and slow
- Use a perch at first
- Give compliments
- You cannot give up
- Advance to hands contact
- Move around the house
- Treats are needed constantly
- Diet is vital in training
Hygiene for the cage and the bird is essential

  • Be patient. Move slowly. Be gentle. Win the bird's trust by demonstrating you're not going to harm the bird. Never lash out or strike the bird. Always let them see what you're doing. They bite only out of fear or defense.

  • I had a cockatiel named spike. Best bird I ever had and he was obsessed with me. He always wanted to be near me and I eventually got him to recognise my specific whistle while it was dark and even made his own short recognition chirp so he didn’t panic. Unfortunately he died about a month or two ago now. Fuck I miss that bird

  • I got my cockatiel when she was 18 years old. She was afraid at first but she warmed up to me pretty fast. She is an old lady with a damaged wing but she seems happy. She likes to dance. She likes to come very close to my face. But she shies away from my hands. It's an old lady, so I'm not gonna put real pressure on her to hand-tame her. I'm glad she looks healthy, happy and curious.

  • I found a cockatiel alone at a normal pet store when I was younger. She was fully grown, they didn’t know her age. She flew out of the cage right to me, and she’s been my little girl since. A few years go by and I decide I want to get her a friend so she isn’t alone when I can’t be with her. I found a breeder, and selected a baby cockatiel. He was so sweet at first, he was okay with scratches and everything else. I don’t know when it switched, but he has become so aggressive I have no idea what to do. He isn’t even nice to my sweet girl anymore. To me it seems like he gets so protective of her and then gets so angry he can’t contain himself. He hates hands, he will only step on my hand when I take him out of the cage. Sometimes he will see me petting my girl, and come over and put his head down, and then draw blood when I try to pet him. I’m really at a loss here..

I definitely took the toy down so he won’t choke. but day 3 he won’t come out his cage still. it’s okay i’m letting him get familiar ( i leave his cage door wide open so he knows it’s safe to come out). for some reason he panics or has anxiety attacks and starts looking for someone, perhaps another bird? it scares me because he runs all around the cage falling and screaming.. i don’t know what triggers him. he’s also blind out one eye he was born like that🙁 i think maybe that has something to do with it… any tips or advice ?

I’m okay if he doesn’t but I still wanna try everything that I can. He’s still scared of my hands. Won’t do step up inside the cage and I gotta try many times when he’s out of the cage. He does play a lot, get a really good diet, and has a large flight cage. I’ve noticed he’s just not very tame. Which worries me because when he does freak out he’s flew into the wall twice luckily he didn’t get hurt. He’s a sweet boy and sings. But soon as I get to close to the cage he’s on alert crest up wings close to sides and watches me like a hawk. And when he is out of the cage he sleeps in his corner, plays on the floor, or is on top of his cage singing.

  • I had rescued a 2 year old cockatiel named buddy. The original owner didnt know that she had to spend time with him and give him lots of attention. All she did with him was give him food and water. Hes very scared of people. He will hiss and try to attack you. Ive gotten to the point where i can feed him from my hand but he will not do that with anyone else and he will hiss and try to attack other people in my household. He never really seems comfortable at all, although he is getting better and he will sing most of the day and screech to come out of his cage. I use sunflower seeds with him as that seems to win his heart he also loves millet. Hes never had a bath before (he never had the choice to as the owner used like a water bottle for his water.) so first i tried to mist him with a spray bottle, but he doesnt seem to like it. Ive given him a choice of bathing himself as he has a bowl of water in his cage i always put in fresh everyday. The lady said that hes also never had fruit & veg she stopped giving it to him as he wouldnt try it. Im trying to work on that at the moment. I really need some advice please 😅 sorry for the long comment.

    • @@skazka9400 i have very large birds, i live in a small one story home and their poop is the size of two quarters i do not let them poop everywhere, my home would smell and look horrible. i have bird diapers and leashes and i take them outside time to time, they do not have small cages so they are very entertained and can fly around all day but letting them poop in my room/ house is a definite no way

  • Imma say how i tamed my cocktail”lemon” first thing i do is i DONT cut her wings instead i tape the first three feathers after that i trap him/her in a corner then i gently pick her/him up and put her/him down i also pet her the younger the birb the less bites you get after 30minutes at least she will allow me to pick her up by putting my finger on her belly and then she grabs me the more time you spend with your cocktail the more it will like you so yea that how i tamed lil lemon;D

  • I just got one today he was pretty scared any loud noise made him jump and having kids in the house didn’t help either but i still insisted on bonding with him i fed him with my hands until he was comfortable then i toutched him gently he freaked out so i stoped i left him alone for 2 hours and did the same again and when i touched him this time he let me pet him but just in the right side if i touched the left he start biting or if i touche his belly but im glad he let me touche him the first day but the weird thing is that he didn’t make any sound all day

    • @@sharequsman596 It is. They might bite, but their bites aren't that bad. Just remember not to get mad at the bird, it's not trying to be mean it's just scared. If you're scared of getting bitten (which doesn't hurt that much) you can wear a glove to make sure it doesn't hurt

  • Cockatiels are the best. I have 5 months old female cockatiel and she always loves head scratches. I got her when she was 6 weeks old. Also she live with my two budgie in the same cage doesn’t fight them. I wouldn’t recommend if you get an older cockatiel.
