Tommy has been through absolute hell time and time again. I find it interesting Dream took Tommy's armor specifically every day in exile, because Tommy is much like armor itself: being the scapegoat, yet coming back to the people that have hurt him time and time again as a loyal protector. Tommy's character deserves a heartfelt song, and from what I've heard this does him justice to the highest degree. :D
Yet people still shit on his character. I dont get why, but I love this character other when he's being childish or whatever. Half of his audience are children mind you so of course he's gonna be a lil immature in his persona. But at the end of the day he is a young man, he isn't 12-

What I love about this song is that it doesn't focus on Tommy's most outward characteristics, his aggressive behavior and loud personality. Instead it focuses on the desperate part of Tommy that has only been growing larger and larger. All Tommy wanted was a home, a place for him and his friends to live in safety. he wanted to own his own possessions, have a home and be at peace. That was always his goal, no matter how he went about it. And with the final destruction of L'manberg, exile and now imprisonment Tommy is getting more and more desperate. I know this song was made before the whole imprisonment and death arc but it describes what we're seeing pretty well. Tommy is so much...quieter. He still yells and talks loudly but he is so much more reserved and afraid than he has ever been. He's paranoid and longing for some sense of normalcy. I think it's really noticeable towards the end of his latest stream (getting out of prison). Quackity rants, yells and curses at Tommy, and instead of Tommy yelling back or arguing he just sits in silence. He doesn't respond until Q is finished and all he says is '..okay'. TLDR I love this song because it delves into Tommy's innerworkings, he's a child desperate and longing for stability and a home he can be safe in.

I really love the lyrics "Realize you're keeping me from breaking, breaking free from this stone" because, as I percieve it, it is directed at c!Dream - the first part sounds like he's helping c!Tommy from breaking completely, a comfort, a support, only for the second part to come in, and the positive meaning is turned on it's head as he realizes Dream is not supporting him, but trapping him in a place where he can't recover. He is beating him down, under the guise of building him up. Masterful stuff. Love this

Now to be fair, I love constructive replies and I was rude, but let's take into consideration that I checked every comment (I could find) made on the video when this comment was made. I didn't find a single comment mentioning the reference, so I made this comment gesturing that "Yes, this is strange, all things considered." *5 months pass* and I get a reply stating one of two things: I missed a comment, or the person replying made a comment about the reference *after* I made this comment. Either way, the gap in time and the reply were both pretty inane. Something like "I noticed this too!" could have been said, but saying shit like "Funny, I pointed this out" when you didn't at the time of the comment's inception speaks a more passive-aggressive tone, to me at least. Omg, this hits hard now, Tommy just wanted live in peace with your friends, your family, he just wanted find his home, a place that he could call home, but now he's stuck in afterlife with Schlatt and mexican dream (at least) we don't know what will happen next (but we have teories, sure). Dream, her son, is in a prision, and now, he killed Tommy, that she prottected before, 'cause she knows that above everything, Tommy is still a child (I'm sorry Tommy). Tommy lost everything, his family, his friends, his home, and now, his last canon life. What will happen? Dream can revive Tommy to prove his power, everyone can just make a funeral for Tommy and forget about him, someone can try kill dream to revenge... And Karl Jacobs, Why is he important for the lore? Idk, this is the first time that I do this, anyway, he's traveling in the time, maybe trying to discover how to try prevent that all of this happen, accordingly the other song of Kat (Turn back time). Well guys, only the time will say what will happen, until this day, stay tuned in Dream SMP and stay safe. And Tommy, stay breathing, stay fighting, don't worry, you'll find your home. "Realize you're keeping me from breaking Breaking free from the stone." Throughout exile, Tommy had the notion that Dream was his friend, that he was helping him, keeping him from breaking. But then he realized Dream wasn't his friend, he was his prison guard, a manipulator, keeping him from breaking free. It's an interesting to thought to imagine Tommy saying this a bit after exile, still tripping over whether or not Dream was keeping him from breaking, or keeping him from escaping.

When Tommy would log onto the DreamSMP whilst in exile, he would almost always be underwater and drowning. I’m not sure if you meant to make that connection with the first line, but if you did it’s such great attention to detail. That is something I like about your DreamSMP songs, you implement lines that make sense to the DreamSMP fandom but would just seem poetic to anyone else. For example in “Turn Back Time” one line is “I’m taken to this place in between, where I’ve been and where I’ll be” If you know the Tales From the SMP, you know that the in between is an actual place but the line will still make sense if you don’t know what the in between is.
obsessed with how well every lyric relates to his emotions but also the literal events...”wake up drowning” bc he logged in drowning in the ocean. “all the ghosts have left me” bc ghostbur disappeared. “my nightmares (aka dream) are my only friends”, “keeping me from breaking” like dream was helping and then “breaking free from the stone” bc dream was actually keeping him trapped. “colors turning gray” like his eyes getting less blue and “should i stay” like his thoughts on the day dream blew up logstedshire. i have been thinking about this like every day since it came out its just !!! so good

You pick it up out of curiosity and turn it on, it's extremely dusty but you can still make out what the screen looks like. You turn on the phone and see it's at 47% and you see there's a screen lock, you remember the password and manage to open it. You see your background and are wondering who it is. You see all your old apps, Twitch, KZhead, Twitter, Discord, Wattpad, etc. KZhead catches your eye because ever since they made the new way to watch videos online, nobody watches KZhead anymore. You click on it and see someone with the name Georgenotfound in your recommended. You can't quite remember who that is, you go to library and see "Welcome home" you think to yourself, you don't remember that, it's been years since you used this phone. You click on it and all the memories start to flood back, the Dream SMP, all the youtubers, all the songs, all the fans, and all the friends you made. You start breaking down and crying right there and then. You can't believe you forgot about the Dream SMP. You hadn't heard of those people in years. You start to think, what if they... Died..? Your family member walks in and asks what's wrong. "Nothing" you reply. "Just found some amazing nostalgia.."

The verse "oh who am I, was it all a lie ?, take a leap of faith, and reach the sun in the sky" matches perfectly the headcanon/AU where Dream modified Tommy's code to erase his wings and memories associated with it. It also makes me think of Icarus a character he was frequently compared to.

Even years later, this song has been one of my most favourite songs ever, the calming beginning and end of the song and then the drop being just incredible. Thank you Derivakat for creating songs like this, your work is truly amazing. Keep doing what your good at, and never give up!

I love how at first it goes "realize you're keeping me from breaking", when dream was tommy's only 'friend'. But then tommy found out dream was just manipulating him and the song continues "breaking free from the stone". It's like a plot twist in the lyics so to speak, it's so great and very smart of derivakat to include in the lyrics! Absolutely my fave part of the song :'>
