Bluefin Fishing San Diego - 8 Minute Tuna - Fortune Sportfishing 5/22/23
Day 2 trip May 2023 - San Diego California. We made the Journey to Southern California for some offshore Bluefin, Yellowtail and whatever else would bite fishing. We got to Fisherman's Landing early Sunday morning to watch the off load of any boats that my be returning from overnight or multi day trips. We see lots of Bluefin tuna being unloaded from 30 pounds up to 200+ pounds. As we wait in line with some new friends we just made we are super excited to see what the Pacific Ocean has to offer. Our boat was scheduled to leave at 10 a.m. I really like leaving the landing early in the morning, plenty of time to get your gear ready and take a nap.....LOL

Nice. You made pretty quick work out of that 100 tuna. No doubt thanks to a legit setup. That combo kicked ass. Nice job. Beautiful fish 👍
Thanks!!! That setup is awesome!!!
3 weeks ago I went out for first time on party boat of 26 and could not handle 30 lb blue fin. It’s nice to see others having issues with heavy fish. Great Vdo and learning about equipment used. I did manage to bring back 1 bluefin and 2 guys gave me two yellow. I now know what I have to do to prepare for my next trip. 🙏💪🌍🌎🌏❤️🇺🇸🖖
Every trip is a learning experience!!👊👊
Interesting, not always, but I've experienced that some smaller Tuna (~30lb)are stronger fighters than the say 150 lbs. Equipment matters.. but like the old axiom. It's the young lean and in-shape guy against the older bulkier, fatter (not so great shape) guy... TRUE with tuna too.. last year here in Brazil a big YFT over 240lb literally suffered a heart attack at about 60 feet, after a 45 minute battle. The fish literally just went dead weight and didn't move when they pulled it in the boat 😅
@@dannyshepard9293 That was my son's BFT. He's 25 and took about 1.5 hours. I helped him a little but he did the bulk of the work!!! 🤣🤣👊
Cool video and nice fish! Question: I know you mentioned the importance of having at least a 2-speed reel and your reel was the HXW 3-speed. It looks like during the fight, the reel was never in low gear (the button wasn’t pushed all the way in). Was it in “medium” gear? Those fish are going to kick your butt anyway, but it might’ve been even easier in the lowest gear, especially when the fish is straight up and down.
Thanks for watching. Yeah, in the heat of the fight, it's easy to not do everything correctly!!!🤣🤣🤙🤙
that was awesome to follow along with you, thanks for the ride, great job!!!!
That was epic sick vid. Love it. Must of gave you really good fight.
great video, by the way what gear did you used 😁, always enjoy watching your videos and great detail on the gear
Nice one!
For nighttime use a 80lb or 100lb set up. Set your drag to 22-28lb on the reel without the rod. Once you get bit, you can winch them up in 2-3mins from 200feet or so with ease. I know some like using lighter set ups. It’s harder to use but once you get used to the weight, the big set ups are easier to fish tuna.
😢 for reals 22 lb to 28 lb of drag. That's an insane amount.
@@kongxiong6005 definitely need to be in sort of shape other than circular.
@@EvoSGooD lmao. Good thing I'm oval shaped 😀
Nice Fish! You whipped its arse! I like your videos. Do you live in Las Vegas? Would you like to carpool down to SD for fishing? I am retired and am open for fishing any day of the week. As you know weekdays T-Th are best for traffic and reduced angler count. I live in Henderson near the Sunset Station. Just got off a trip on the Tribute out of Seaforth. Big swells and howling wind but the fish were there. Landed a 75LB on 300G knife jig. Enjoying bluefin tuna every night since.
Yep, live in Las Vegas. It's no joke catching a tuna in rough seas!!! I have 2 more offshore trips planned in September. Thanks for watching!!
@@MFOutdoors I am fishing on the Tribute 1.5 7/18-7/20 and I will do another in August and am scheduled for 4 day charter on the Searcher 9/21-9/24 with a limited load of 16. That will be nice but pricey at $2,200. If you ever want to go down to SD for an open party or need a passenger for a charter let me know.
I have a charter out of Seaforth on the Highliner departing Sunday June 23 at 6PM returning Wednesday June 26 at 6AM@@MFOutdoors. Cost is $1,000 including food for 2.5 days. There may be a small fuel surcharge. Are you interested? It is limited to 15 anglers on a 70 foot boat.
Did you hook ‘em with the hooks on top??? I’ve got my HXW spooled up with 100# hollow core on a Seeker 2x3. Not as soft a tip like the Phoenix rod. Nice fish man 👍👍
Both.....top and bottom hooks!! I would recommend having hooks on both top and bottom of the jig.
@@MFOutdoors I guess I’ll have to go shopping for my two day that’s coming up in two weeks. Thanks for the heads up 👍
Could you talk a bit about your technique? How you're working your jig? Looks like you're just dropping and reeling in... ? I'm a Californian living in Brazil. Here, they use much lighter jig Rods and "working " the jig or Jigging is important. They follow Japanese techniques and i think in some ways ahead. I have the Phoenix rod you showed! I brought it from CA, but nobody uses this type rod for Jigging, they say it's too heavy or stiff, not allowing the "action needed to catch big tuna.". (no BFT here, but YFT, Big Eye and large Albacore) . Also, fishing around off-shore Platforms, deeper water (300+ meters), we use a lot of Electric reels. I'd like to try more California style fishing here... it's a different world, but good fishing here! Any thoughts?
I use braided line that changes color every 30 feet, so I have an idea that I'm at the correct depth. Once I'm in the zone, I will let the jig free fall for about 5 seconds and the stop it (Jigging). I do that for about 5 color changes, then reel as fast as I can bringing in 150' of line (5 color changes). Then start over. I do that 3 or 4 times, depending on how fast the boat is drifting. Then wind in all the line and REPEAT. Do that until you arm is ready to fall off!!!!! 🤣🤣🤣 Or until you hook one!!! Let every give you crap about the Phenix Rod being to big. You'll be happy you have it when you hook a 100# Tuna!!! 👊👊 Tight Lines!!! MF Outdoors
Nice job. Bft got you huffing n puffing for a sec. How long is your setup?
🤣🤣 Old man problems.
Was thinking about going out on that boat? What do you think about it compared to other boats?
It was great. Super fishy Crew. We were scheduled to go on the Islander (Awesome Boat) but they didn't have enough people so we moved over to the Fortune. Only 9 anglers made it that much better!!! I would definitely go again on the Fortune.
Damn only 9 people! Can't get any better then that
@Mr05sti and they still got tangled
@@David-hn5ix Hahaha......I could get in a tangle with 2 people fishing!!!
I am going to open up a business renting long range fishing gear
That's a good idea and sounds expensive..
