HIMARS: How it's changing Ukraine's fight against Russia

2022 ж. 3 Қыр.

Since the United States provided Ukraine with 16 High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (or HIMARS), the launchers are changing the face of battle, becoming a key weapon in Ukraine's counteroffensive against invading Russian forces. CBS News national security correspondent David Martin visits the Lockheed Martin plant where the highly-effective precision rocket launchers are built; and a test range where HIMARS crews are trained to "shoot and scoot."

    • You probably didn’t hear it when they said that it will take them two years to produce enough of these rockets to make some kind of an impact in the war. We had 20K of these rockets, Ukraine spent half of them. I just wonder, where do those billions go if half of our HIMARS rocket stock was spent within a month?

      @MrGolov-te5eb@MrGolov-te5eb Жыл бұрын
    • @YAT 97 it’s not true. The US never used HIMARS for the past 3 decades or used it very little. So there was no need to produce missiles for them. Only 21K in stock with a 3rd given to Ukranians initially. The guy in this video said that they will need 18-24 months(read 2 years+) to produce enough rockets to make a difference in this war. By that time Russians will drink tea in NY’s Central Park. And, no. I am not a Democrat. Democrats support this war. They support Biden and his crackhead son, Hunter, great energy advisor who sits on the board of Burisma in Ukraine. I will be voting Trump if he runs again.

    • @YAT 97 and here’s another problem with our weapons stockpiles. Artillery shells. Did you know that the US wouldn’t be able to produce enough artillery shells to fight a ground war with China? Or Russia for that matter.

    • @YAT 97 I have posted an article for you to read. It was written by US LT. Colonel Alex Vershinin for the Royal United Services Institute which is a top UK 🇬🇧 military think tank. So google his name and this organization then read the article. In it he details the numbers. Did you know that the Russians are spending 70K artillery shells and rockets per day in Ukraine? Sounds unbelievable, but it is true. We don’t have that capability. Then loonies like your friend Joe Biden wants to go to war with China whose industrial capabilities are far greater than Russia’s.

    • I am not inclined to think that these concerns are put to rest. There are estimates that about 70% of weapons given to Ukraine by the West never makes it to the frontlines. In Ukraine's gray market, a Javelin, a Stinger or a Switchblade can be had for USD 4K, delivered anywhere in Europe. Imagine what kind of dream this is even for a starter terrorist in Europe.

  • It's easy as an American to feel like spending $40 billion on weapons for Ukraine is a waste. Still, you have to figure that we spend $800 billion annually on defense. Our primary rivals are Russia and China. If the Ukrainians are willing to suffer casualties and fight the Russians in a war of aggression, then we should support them. The more tanks, APC's, trucks, helicopters, fighter jets, experienced soldiers, etc. that the Ukrainians destroy, the less we have to worry about. America was on the winning side of two world wars because of our industrial capacity. We suffered comparatively few casualties compared to other countries in both of those wars. Russia is burning through all of its men and equipment in a futile war over farmland. Russia is making a strategic blunder. Russia's armed forces will be weakened for decades to come, and its political leadership will be weakened by domestic unrest as the true cost of the war becomes known.

The USA also has the best MLRS in the world. The M270 MLRS and the M142 HIMARS. They'll likely buy the licenses they need to domestically make things they need. Plus, for the US Forces-Poland, that means a shorter supply train as well. We are currently training about 80.000 Ukrainian army troops and their air force is getting conversion training in the US to switch to F-16s. We are sending them in with modern equipment and supplies. Russia has to take whatever the Belarusian president is willing to part with and is begging Iran and China for supplies. Not only Himars but Himars as the most important system allong with MLRS, M777, PzH200, CAESAR, AHS Krab, Archer and a lot of longrange guided rounds for all these systems!

    • The US could never supply enough missiles for that many vehicles - even 16 could exhaust all US missiles in under 10 months by firing full loads just three times a day. So without missiles that is a worthless vehicle. Ukraine must wisely conserve those missiles because once the US expends what it considers a limiting amount of its reserves, there will be no more until more are produced.

I would argue the vast majority of sane people in the world would rather have peace than war, but if and when war happens it's always better to be on the side with the better weapons than on the side receiving the other end.

    • Well, considering the US barely has 400 in its entire arsenal that’s kinda hard to do. They currently are fielding orders over 1000 systems to nations wanting them. Overseas sales of advanced weapons have to be approved by Congress. You also have to ensure the technology is secure and is not used inappropriately (like firing on civilian targets). It’s not an easy thing to just give and sale things like this.
