I Had a One in a Million Catch From the Forgotten Pond!

Its was time for an adventure back out to the forgotten ponds! This time I brought the chest waders and a lighter setup. This allowed me to navigate more of this flooded woodland in search of pike. I brought the lighter setup to allow me to fish small weedless baits right into the weeds optimizing how many fish I could cast to. It was an action packed session with a real surprising catch.

  • Fishing an estate lake for tench I saw a big bright Pike float in the reeds, too far to reach with the landing net. So I put a tiny spinner on the 13' match rod and cast to try and snag the line below the float... well free float and all that..... the float moved so I knew the spinner had made contact I reeled slowly and then all hell broke loose, the drag on the match reel screamed and the rod arched. I obviously expected the float to come loose and reappear elsewhere. No I had a fight on my hands. I wasn't sure if the now hooked fish was on the spinner or if I had managed to get a good snag on the pike line. After a good long and careful fight I netted a 16lb 2 oz Pike. Amazingly when I had a good look I saw that one of the hooks of my spinner had actually gone through the hole on the swivel of the dead bait set up. Best Pike to date too a PB and I'm claiming it... 😉😂

  • Had a few bizarre things happen in 45 years of fishing. Caught a double figure pike from the River Thames whilst feeder fishing. The pike grabbed my feeder on the retrieve and didn't let go! Managed to land it. Also caught a 6lb carp at Hayfield on the pole whilst I was plumbing up on the pole. The fish grabbed the plummet and didn't let go!

  • Over 50 years ago, we’d camp out at weekends at Keston Ponds. Over the lane behind (and over a fence!) was a private pond chock full of jack pike. We’d spin for them and inevitably get broken off. Usually had to leg it before we were spotted, but what fun. Chris takes it to a new level though.

  • Wow what a true professional, landing a pike through a briar bush. Once while fishing, I found a goose down feather and decided to add it to my weedless rig by clamping it in the hookweight I use. After a few casts I hooked into a 1lb bass and after unhooking and releasing the fish, I realized my feather was still attached but not the way I attached it. It fell off the hookweight and got pinned into the snap(very similar to your quick twist). I left it there and caught another larger bass later. I also landed my only longnose gar(long snout with hundreds of needle teeth almost like an alligator) by having my 12# braid get tangled in its teeth and somehow not get cut.

  • Here in Florida tannic(dark) water can cause fish to take on counter shading which is when they take a dark shade from above and a lighter belly shade to hide from predators and stay out of sight to their prey. The dark top blends in with the tannic water from above and the lighter belly blends into the sunlight from above. Can make some species look very different

  • I once had a regular run, struck the fish and saw the pike thrash about 20 yards in front of me which I thought was strange as I had cast my dead bait around 60 yards out. I landed the fish which had my 30 pound mono round both of its gill plates, the line then broke as I was unhooking. I then hand lined in my untouched dead bait which was still 40 yards out in loch. I’m presuming the pike swam into my line then started spinning and the gill plates started cutting through my line just before I landed it.

Anyway, eventually, a trout took the bait on the rod of the youngest...who was chasing butterflies or something. The trout pulled the whole rod in! My Dad could see the rod (cork handle)...and popped on a Daredevil lure... snagged the line.... reeled in the rod... my brother then reeled in the trout!

  • I was using a Heddon Meadow Mouse surface lure several summers ago. I had had and missed several takes when I had another really good take which I hit and played in to land it, and was very surprised to realise that the pike was not hooked, but the trace had managed to get caught by one of the trebles on the lure and had effectively lassooed the pike. It was only around 2 pounds. My other unusual catch was on a different venue, I was float paternostering a livebait on one rod and legering a smelt deadbait on another rod. I had a run on the legered bait and was playing what was clearly a good fish, when I had a take on the livebait, clearly I could only play one fish, so I continued playing the original fish, when I landed it I could see that it had also taken my livebait. The baits had been around 20 yards apart, and although being played the pike took the livebait. It weighed in at 15 - 12.
