    • Rob Bobcat I thought he or she would be thinner too. So when I see one in the wilderness, can't' really tell if it is well fed or really hungry. Yikes. Met a mom and a little cub once, but they were just on the trail ahead of me sniffing around, got some water and came back, jumped around on a fallen log. I managed to get some pictures while keeping an eye out for any other cubs, and trying to make sure the other 9 people in my hiking party didn't scare them away. So the sleep 4 months and spend another month waking up? Don't the females give birth in the dens? Good thing it didn't collapse while he was sleeping.

    • Someone in a bear sanctuary recently told us that bears don't actually loose very much (if any) weight during the hibernation. They only loose a lot after they woke up because food is hard to come by in spring. And it takes a while until they find enough to maintain their weight.

    • Also apparently the hibernation i's not a totally deep sleep. They wake up every day for some hours to stretch and go back to sleep. Very interesting

      @AnniundLilo@AnniundLilo4 жыл бұрын
    • I thought of that, too. But they also don't hibernate as long as brown bears in much colder climates. They start denning in October and don't come out till spring. That's gives them more time to lose fat.

    • Black bears come in black (standard), brown ("cinnamon bears"), white ("spirit bear), and gray-blue ("glacier bear"). The far east Asian subspecies of brown bear from eastern Russia and northern China can be nearly black in colour.

    • John Smith I’d have bear mace first. Black Bears it seems don’t like high pitched noises. There was a bear encounter a few years ago where someone hit an axe against a brick and the noise from it made a bear take off. But before you feel brave to take on a Black Bear they can weigh over 800lbs. One was shot and killed in NJ of all places and it was over 800lbs.

    • @@tarynlutz2761 lol I live in bear country and when a grizzly is charging at you a gun wouldn't do nothing! Bear spray has a wider range and is the better option if you wanna live. It would take at least 3 shots with a hand gun to take a grizzly down

    • Dan, thanks. There's more bears in my yard than squirrels. I can't see what's around my front corner til I get there and saw a bear track right by my front steps in snow

    • It's so weird, how different life for wild animals is to ours. The bear's born, fights to survive, maybe has cubs of it's own, and dies. No more, no less.
