In this video I talk about how I built out a direct to consumer sales stream to earn a premium off of my sheep. I knew I would not be able to rely on sale barns if I wanted to earn a consistent profit from my 30 acre sheep farm. By building out a direct-sales stream I am able to diversify my farm and even use that sales stream to sell smaller-ticket items throughout the year.
I hope this helps!

  • Consider installing a Screech Owl nest box. Owls eat rodents which host ticks and attract pit vipers.

  • Grace, this video is incredible! It is well made, but the info is so important to get out there. I'm so glad to see another shepherd selling sheep at this price range. All my full-blood Dorpers were sold via my YT channel, between $450 and $500 per lamb. I hear many people on my own channel who say that the price is too high. But I'm just so glad to see someone else doing it at a larger scale than myself. You rock Grace, keep up the good work!

    • Glad it encouraged you!! There is a wide open market with respect to direct-sales and farming. I hope more people take advantage of it.

  • I'm excited to learn more, because we have a small flock of Katadhin/Dorper mix sheep that we're raising for meat, but marketing them is something I have to work on. Most people in our area never get back to us when I say they are $200 to $250 each! I had one lady begging me to sell her weaned lambs for $100 this spring and I refused. Plus, there's other established farms in the area that have been selling sheep for many years, especially to NYC clients.

  • Very nice. I just sold some at a sale barn in MO. After taking 15% out for taxes, I was left with $85 per head. 😂 ...ouch

  • You have a non offensive system to collect email addresses from self qualifying customers. I love your knowhow on marketing. I hate to be sold to, but I don't mind it if someone helps me solve a problem.

    • My assumption is supply and demand. Sheep are not a staple of the North American diet, so they are not common. So those seeking it out for meat pay more because it’s hard to find.

    • Lamb is over demanded and undersupplied in north america right now partly or largely because of immigration. At least in Canada. The US and Canada are not big on sheep historically. Lamb is largely a foreign or occasional food to old stock Canadians.

  • Marketing, not a skill most farmers and ranchers possess. ❤ I have a lot of grain to offload, it’s not going to sell itself on Amazon the way the proteins do. Many phone calls, e-mails, and face to face contacts, and 2 good open house evens every year.

  • Excellent video as always. 😊 Love the lamb potluck idea! Question- when you say butcher- are you taking them to a USDA butcher? Home butchering? Selling the live animal? We are very interested in sheep but no one in our area processes sheep. We could do it ourselves (we have done our own venison), but I’m pretty sure it’s illegal to sell. Do you have a video explaining these options?

  • In our state, we are not allowed to sell shares or cuts of meat without being certified as a butcher by the USDA. We can only sell live animals to the new owner. This really limits our options.
