  • I'm on a roll. Three in a row. Must be the fruit and vegetable supplements I've been taking. I thought formed during the Great Depression. Picturing Eleanor Roosevelt keeping the flame of hope alive. Ran through some organizations in my head. Hmmm... March of Dimes... wait dimes are silver...right...hmmm... OK ... March of Dimes it is.

  • This one's pretty easy if you associate the organization with polio (and recognize that FDR was in the WH.) I play bar trivia regularly, it's come up in questions there.

    • @@freezer8530 Hmmm... I wonder if that's coincidence, i.e. the "March of Dimes" --> childhood polio --> FDR --> he's on the dime loop. It probably is coincidence... that the name of the organization probably wasn't chosen because the dime connection to FDR (and his connection to polio). But I could be wrong. Must investigate now.

    • @@IdRatherBeDiving-vr5gk Actually, Roosevelt's likeness wasn't put on the dime until shortly after his death, and I'm sure that his founding of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis (which became known as the March of Dimes) played a role into that.

  • Remember when 5-time champions used to win a car (for a while it was a choice of Chevrolets). What would Allison pick? A nice pair of Chevy Cameros like Brad Rutter? A Corvette? A Blazer EV? Maybe a Silverado… Ah, the old days.

    • If you grew up as a kid in the 1950's, like me, you had to get this clue. When you saw someone in a wheelchair in the 1950's and 1960's, it was usually due to polio. Once the first vaccine was created in 1953, the whole country raced to have their children vaccinated and boosted every time their pediatrician told them to do so, lest they end up unable to walk (like FDR and so many others) or partially disabled (like Bill Cullen and Mitch McConnell and so many others) or unable to breathe without an "iron lung," which meant children were dying from the disease if their breathing was not assisted in time. (Seventy years later, there were still two Americans living in iron lungs. One died earlier this year, leaving just one.) You were bombarded with PSA's on radio and TV asking you to collect and send in your dimes, and then, of course, larger contributions. (That was when a dime could buy you a candy bar or a comic book.) As the clue mentioned, this organization was founded in 1938 (by FDR), the campaign started by the comedian Eddie Cantor to rally the nation to be aware of the disease and fight together to prevent the spread of the virus and discover a vaccine. The polio virus has been around for thousands of years. It is one of the "miracles" of modern medicine that such a contagious virus has been eradicated in the USA, though it still appears in other countries passed from unvaccinated person to unvaccinated person or through unclean water supplies. Over the course of a century, there used to be well over a million cases in the USA. Congratulations to Alison for reaching the five-win level.

  • While the name did end up being quite literal, the reason they chose dimes, instead of say, nickels, was to capitalize upon a popular newsreel program that played before movies of that era called the March of Times. The administration was brainstorming ways to raise funds for infantile paralysis, and none other than Eddie Cantor, the famous singer and entertainer who was aware of these efforts, being personally invested to some extent, was watching the March of Times and thought of March of dimes and imagined a flood of dimes descending upon the White House and thought maybe asking every American to mail a single dime to the White House would end up raising at least enough money to get things rolling. It ended up being one of the most successful fundraising campaigns in history, probably much more so than the March of Nickels or Pennies would have been 😂

It’s such a breath of fresh air to see her be our first streaker of season 40 after a series of tournaments and the unfortunate situation of the long hiatus breaking Lucas Partridge’s 3-day run last week.
