A DFU restore is the deepest type of iPhone restore. It's the last step on the road to determining whether a software problem is causing whatever issue you're having on your iPhone. If a DFU restore doesn't fix it, it's usually a hardware problem.
Before putting an iPhone DFU mode, it's very important to create a backup. A DFU restore erases and reloads every line of code on your iPhone. Without a backup, you'll lose all of your data and information.

📱 How To DFU restore an iPhone 8 or newer: Plug your iPhone into your computer and open iTunes (on a PC or Mac running MacOS 10.14 or earlier) or Finder (on newer Macs). Quickly press and release the volume up button, then quickly press and release the volume down button, then press and hold the side button until the screen goes black.
When the screen goes black, press and hold the volume down button while continuing to hold the side button. Hold both buttons for five seconds, then release the side button while continuing to hold the volume down button. Keep holding the volume down button until your iPhone appears in Finder or iTunes. Finally, click Restore iPhone.

Change is a good thing
I've noticed that when I engage a person in US Constitutional issues that I have far fewer people calling me names as I did before Elon Musk announced buying Twitter. He hasn't even bought Twitter and Twitter is less toxic already. I believe his politics are in between the left or right (Centrist). They are my politics, but I like the result.

I said that since Elon Musk has made an offer on Twitter that when I engage people in US Constitutional issues fewer people are calling me names, not that I am engaging with fewer people. I've had Parkinson's for over 26 years and when it came about that I couldn't type on a computer anymore I had to retire. I became bored and started studying the US Constitution. Sometimes when I see something stated wrongly about the US Constitution or a lack of understanding of the US Constitution I gently try to show them what the US Constitution actually says. Unfortunately because I can't type or can barely type on my iPhone I use dictation which is very tiring, takes a long time, and can be problematic.

Things have evolved since this video. The latest version of iOS, iPadOS, and macOS allows you to DFU Update, rather than do a DFU Restore. An updated video on this topic would be welcomed.
What is the difference between DFU mode and the restor Mac symbol when you hold down the side button and you see the computer logo and not the black screen?

Does dfu only work on Mac? Could it work on a hp pavilion? I have a iPhone se 2 that won't go passed the apple logo. When I hard reset it it tell me to plug into iTunes. When I plug it in and its done doing its thing ,it says "the iphone `iphone` could not be restored. An unknown error occurred" I tried everything but the dfu but I don't have a Mac.
Does clean installing the ipsw several times on the same phone cause the ssd to wear out to a noticeable extent ?
Omg! I have been trying for literally a month now! You guys just saved my phone I have tried everything else to fix it, even finally calling apple support. My pc kept showing “Apple mobile device (recovery Mode) I’m hoping this fixes it. I locked myself out trying to keep my 6-year- old sone wha already knows some hacking skills 😂 from getting in. hi guys, and happy birthday david! i had problems w my phone all day (couldn't make calls/texts were failing). contacted the carrier for help and reset the phone which seemed to fix things, until once again messages started to fail. i reset the phone a second time, so we'll see how it goes tomorrow-bizarre.

Thanks for the video. I can’t get my iPhone (the touch screen is not working) to recognize the cord. I’ve tried Apple cords and non Apple cords and Everytime the iPhone connects to a wire it says “ unlock iPhone to use accessories” but I can’t unlock it because the screen doesn’t work. Therefore, it will not allow me to get in dfu mode bc the comp (a Mac) is not recognizing that anything is plugged in. Help!
I’m currently having the same issue with an iphone XR, but the difference is the screen won’t light up and the touch still works. Just won’t recognize any cord when connected to computer. Weird.

@@J.Tronix Congrats my dude! @Dave Boy From my limited knowledge, that technique when getting a new device is only for Lithium Polymer batteries, not the case for Lithium Ion batteries. With Li-Ion batteries it supposedly doesn’t matter, I still like to charge it to full before the first use and then use it like normal from there on out. (For the record i’ve been getting the newest iphone since the iphone SE 2020 and i’ve maintained really good battery health by the time the next one comes out).
What do you do if you want to do a DFU restore because your phone isn’t charging? I can’t use the cable to connect to the computer. Is there another way?

Is not working for my Iphone 12, someone jailbroke my device and I am working on trying to fix it. Seems the hard-button values have been changed or programmed themselves. It refuses to go into DFU but also doesn't seem to be discoverable on the PC. Any suggestions if you see this?

at the first use it's safe to charge to 100% but you have to use the 20-80 rule after if you want a healthy battery

I have a compass glitch that effect all gps apps like Pokémon Go, Maps, and Google Maps. It always shows me facing 45 degrees difference from reality. It started on my First Gen SE I had years ago after I dropped it really hard, bought a 6S Restored from iCloud back up, and I recently got a 12 Pro Max and still 45 degrees off in a GPS App. I'd be nice to have this fixed on such an expensive device.
@Johnny Rep I think that too. Like it’s calibration is off and never reset. Like it carried it over. I’m pretty sure I tried just logging in and redownloading my apps, but seems something deep in in settings got synced. It shows true when I’m moving fast in a car, but when walking or biking the compass is offset on map apps and Pokémon Go.

If somebody is using Norton then likely have no business trying to reset/repair a device to begin with... probably a good thing that it gets in their way.

My phone hasn't been dropped or have any water damage, I tried to reset it the first way, and it worked for a few days then just stopped again and will not work or enter dfu restore what should any suggestions
My phone is stuck in DFU mode... but I did not choose to put it there. However, software I've downloaded that is meant to take the phone out of recovery mode say, "Your phone is in DFU mode." I can't get it out of DFU mode using the steps you've shown above. Been trying for the past three hours. My question is: is the data recoverable from my phone before or after I exit DFU mode?

Unless you click Restore Now, your data is recoverable while in DFU mode.

For anyone a little confused (at least I was and I had a few tries before I figured it out) In step 3 they say to press and release the side button and continue to hold the VOLUME DOWN BUTTON, when i did mine, I had to press both down and the release the VOLUME DOWN BUTTON so i was still holding the side button, at the end of the video I watched you hold down the VOLUME DOWN BUTTON and then say to release the side button, so anyone in confusion I hope this helps, press both, release volume down button and continue to hold the side button until this pops up!

The toughest part is that people don’t do the last step long enough. The rule is 10 seconds, but “hold until it shows up in iTunes” is more like it. In my experience, it can take as long as 30 seconds.

I am getting error 9. Apple and some stores say its unfixable HOWEVER, I have seen KZhead videos and read comments of people thinking their device was a goner from error 9 and being able to restore it. Do you all know anything about it? Some fixes were as simple as trying a different cable, some say they tried dozens and eventually one worked. Some worked from trying a different usb port, others it was the antivirus software. thoughts? have you had any success restoring this issue?

I am using a brand new iPhone 13 mini. I installed the 15.5 update directly after turning it on. From day one the performance feels horrendous. Animation stutters and frame drops occur pretty often. In addition the gesture to get back to the home screen is laggy from time to time. Cant belief I am using an iPhone. Apple checked the hardware and told me it is fine and I should wait for a software update. I already tried all kind of resets followed by a software restore via iTunes. Issues are still there. Is a restore over DFU any different than a clean restore via iTunes? If yes, this would be my last shot. Otherwise I will probably get rid of the phone as I am really sensitive to stuttering and this is driving me nuts…

For an iPhone that might have been jailbroken and hacked by somebody with physical access to it: Could that phone spread malware or do other harm to the Macintosh, the moment it's cabled to the Mac? My motive for DFU restore is to remove the possibility of my phone being compromised, but it seems I must risk compromising my computer to attempt that.
no, no extternal software loads in DFU mode. It is bare bones uses for restoring firmware. It is the same as a BIOS on a computer. If it is a really advance malware it technically can load in the bootloader, but this is unheard of in iphones , much less MacOS viruses

Actually there is a way to remove activation lock.. There are many software you can use to remove it and Apple can remove it also
