Control - Ray Tracing Comparison (featuring Ray-Traced Contact Shadows, Reflections, Transparent Reflections and Indirect Diffuse Lighting)
Settings maxed out with scenes either in native or DLSS resolution at 1440p.
Even with real-time ray tracing still being in its infancy, I believe RT will become more important with current and coming generation hardware, so I created this channel with the intention of covering ray-traced games. There are plenty of channels doing mainly performance comparisons, my intention is to focus on the visual aspect and make the differences more obvious to viewers through my videos.

  • I've always found the interplay between technology and art interesting. The technological limits of each era result in a specific style, which I think gets only fully appreciated once we have left it completely behind. There may come a day when the "rasterization look" will make people nostalgic. It gets even more interesting when you consider that the people (and their brains) experiencing these games change with the times as well, which explains why you cannot go back and play an old game and re-experience it the same way you did when you first played it. I've noticed myself how with each subsequent graphical generation my visual intelligence has increased, making me more discerning towards early 3D graphics. When you played Half-Life in 1998 (I did in 2000 or so), part of the magic was that it was (almost) cutting edge graphics, stimulating you visually more than it would do nowadays, and what the graphics didn't deliver you would complete in your mind. I remember this aspect being mentioned by an indie developer doing pixel art. This imagination part is vital in creating a sort of transcendent depth to an experience in my opinion, and it is a danger afflicting newer games as they become more and more lifelike, leaving less and less space for imagination.

    • I wonder how much of that is ones own imagination filling in the blanks at the time, and how much is rose tinted glasses and nostalgia, but I get what you mean.

    • @Sodium Chloride I agree regarding the plateau! I don't think I claimed anything to the contrary. There's no going back to early 2000s levels of graphical / hardware advancement, but it also means you don't have to buy a new GPU every two years.

      @asdfjklo124@asdfjklo124 Жыл бұрын
    • @Sodium Chloride I also agree 😂 I do think however that games look too alike nowadays across developers and across genres, one reason presumably being Unreal and Unity proliferation and people using the same assets and settings. Also there are some persistent design choices such as strong bloom, god rays where none should exist, heavy ambient occlusion and other odd design choices which makes games look very 'gamey'. The (ever-)upcoming Witchfire shows what a unique style can bring to the table. Also any Source games have a unique style to them as well.

  • People saying RayTracing doesn't make much of a difference are blind... Not only more specular reflections are amazing, but diffuse reflections are the game changer here: like having a red object next to a white wall lightly tinting it red. And don't get me started on ambient occlusion limitations that RT just absolutly solves. It's not only about reflections, it has a lot to do with blending the hole lighting together in a scene that makes it look so much natural. We really are in a golden age of graphics in games, and with the upcoming UE5 games with Nanite, boy are we going to have a blast (as long as devs use the time they'll save with these technologies to polish games and be creative).

One thing that strikes me as weird is the choice to have additive RT shadows instead of full on RT shadows, like they only cover things that could be covered by screen space shadows for much cheaper? Of course it's a great option for high end users, but it is abit sad that they chose a weird middle ground of having a limited RT effect without a screen space alternative for lower end ones?

  • Late to the game. I've noticed that turning on RT while ssr set to high or medium don't actually turn off ssr. Its just prevents you from adjusting ssr. I turned off RT, then manually turned off ssr, then turned on RT back. You'll get very different result. So kinda like there's 2 mode to this. One is RT on with SSR on, the other is RT on with SSR off.

  • @ray tracing revolution raytracing in games is truly rt ? I mean yeah they look better with rt but they dont look much better in some games, i expected more difference with rt, is rasterization so good or gpu doesnt have enough power to render proper rt, for example how many samples games are using with RT GI, rays per pixel, and how raytracing is compared to the raytracing they use in offline rendering?

    @pablo3558@pablo35582 жыл бұрын
    • Ray tracing in games is proper ray tracing, but with often just 1 ray per pixel or less, which is very low (somewhat redeemed with AI denoising) Often, rays for RTGI only bounce once, while in proper offline rendering rays can have plenty of bounces. Examples for games with more than one bounce are Metro Exodus, Minecraft RTX and Quake 2 RTX. But yeah, it's not on the level of a ray traced scene you get in something like blender.

      @RayTracingRevolution@RayTracingRevolution2 жыл бұрын
    • @@RayTracingRevolution dying light 2 uses infinite bounce too? and how many power do u think we need to do path tracing, one nvidia developer said we will see it in games about 2035

      @pablo3558@pablo35582 жыл бұрын
    • It's usually a "rasterized ray tracing" if you go too technically deep. It is something very difficult for me to explain how it's different from a normal ray tracer. But the difference in result is that in a rasterized ray tracer, you can fall back to rasterized lighting after the first bounce. But an actual ray tracer should continue bouncing until finds a light or becomes dark enough. Or it will make unnaturally dark scenes if you limit it to one bounce. Besides, games these days use one sample per pixel or even less, but then they accumulate them through different frames. So the effective amount of samples can be way more(~64). Then a filter will remove the remaining noise. Comparing it to an offline renderer... They usually use path tracing which is way way more complex. For example, a diffuse ray can turn into a specular ray at anytime... And it samples a lot more so it has way more detail in the result. Also as it's not combining ray tracing with rasterized image, it's way more ray tracingish looking. 👀

      @NiceGuyShaders@NiceGuyShaders2 жыл бұрын
    • If you compare still shots and non moving shots then there won't be much obvious difference. We have reached a point where you can mimic ray tracing/path tracing if looked from correct angles. The real difference is actually in motion where raster based techniques just break apart and all illusions become obvious like reflective surfaces not reflecting correctly by missing objects that are suppose to be reflected due to screen space problem, ambient occlusion not correctly shading, shadows not in the correct casted location, looking too sharp, Light bleeding through surfaces, etc etc... That's where ray tracing comes in. Motion. The games will be looking from here on more and more coherent just like you can see in this video. Where there aren't glowy parts, dislocated reflections, unnaturally looking reflections/shadows etc... Basically moving from fake, mimicing illusion to the real grounded look. If you played game with ray traced features enabled for an hour or two and suddenly switched to raster based, you'd see how fake the whole thing looks and unatural compared to ray traced even though if you compared it shot for shot there's not much difference.

      @sermerlin1@sermerlin12 жыл бұрын
  • The more I watch, the more I am convinced that devs took some stuff away from the game which is mandatory, and said "hey, if you want those back, just open ray tracing fella!". Like, how tf can you explain a light, a white light not having it's reflection on a relatively wet surface? Even with ssr, it should be there. It should be there even before i enable ray tracing. Second example is these horrendous windows. They are absolutely dogshit and don't even look like glass without ray tracing. Glasses need to be transparent whether if rt enabled or not. This whole ray tracing showcase was nothing more than a manipulation simulator and people fell for that. Before you jump up to the comments and start blabbering, I can handle this game with RT high settings with a little bit of tweaking. I merely speak the truth.

The devs just used it to make improvements, and are intentionally leaving the non-RT version unpolished to make the RT visuals stand out. I see a lot more color and contrast improvements, along with dusting off of scenes than actual visual reflection behavior going on.

    • If you prefer it then that's fine, it's all about what looks best for the player, but I'd just like to point out something. Raytracing never makes anything more shiny or more 'wet', it just more accurately portrays the material properties that the artists had already chosen. Without raytracing the floors can only reflect an extremely blurry approximation of the surrounding room, raytracing on is what it 'should' look like. The great thing with control is that you have a ton of options, so if you don't like the overall look of the ambient lighting you can still enable reflections and I think contact shadows and stuff individually

      @existentialselkath1264@existentialselkath12642 жыл бұрын
    • Two possible reasons, firstly, once you commit raytracing to shading a surface, then highly specular (glossy) surfaces will be quicker to render, and secondly there may be an expectation to "show off" what raytracing does to a scene, both factors may lead designers to go glossier than otherwise. I think one can generally judge the maturity of a graphical effect by the degree of subtlety and nuance witih which it's implemented, and RT is in the first phase of "bling bling" and "you better impress me for the colossal framerate drop" coming dangerously close to tackiness in some instances - it's fairly well done in Control imo, Doom Eternal has some polished chrome surfaces on RT that will age rather poorly I suspect.

Also how is an office complex with big skylines supposed to be dark? Are you certain that's the artistic direction?... Just because it has scary elements it doesn't mean it's supposed to be dark, kinda like Left 4 Dead 2.
