Japanese transport ministry and coast guard officials said Tuesday evening they were investigating the cause of the Haneda Airport crash that killed five. The ministry’s transport safety board will seek to determine whether any miscommunication occurred in the air traffic control operation. Bloomberg’s Kurumi Mori reports.

What a lousy way to start the new year. An earthquake, a tsunami, and now this collision. At least the numbers of casualities are low. 😞

Those people are extremely fortunate. This is terrible but it could have been so much worse. Kudos to the crew for getting everyone off in time. RIP to the dead and condolences to the families. 🙏🏻☮️

No - "Investigators are of course discussing it with the pilot" - the Coast Guard pilot was severely injured, and it's not public whether anyone has talked with him, as far as I know - I believe this reporter mistakenly added this detail while relaying thoughts on live television. Yes, surely they will talk with him, if they can, but he's likely fighting for his life still. Haneda is a very busy airport this time of year, and combined with the fatigue of dealing with earthquake relief, it's easy to imagine mistakes, although a mechanical failure could happen at anytime and not be known later, even after an investigation. Rest in peace to the lost crew, welcome back to the survivors.
Japanese broadcaster NHK later released a report to the effect that the Coast Guard pilot believed he had been cleared to take off, while air traffic controllers had in fact told them to stay on the taxiway. Control tower audio shows that the passenger jet had been given the all-clear to land, so some sort of miscommunication definitely occurred with the JCG plane.

It was a domestic flight, going to Haneda. It was its first ever 2024 plane accident of an A350. RIP to those who died.
In this era of cheap GoPros, you can't set up cameras at key points all around the airport for the control tower to see where everyone is on the runways??? Has that plane moved? Let me see on the number 14 cam.
I have to agree with this. For a country that relies heavily on cameras for tickets among other things, I dont see how putting night vision cameras at each taxiway wouldnt make sense for figuring stuff like this out. And this isnt just Japan, unfortunately im sure every other major airport is the same way.

Sounds like the passengers were fairly well behaved also. i.e. didn't create blockages by trying to get their hand luggage etc... Not heard any negative reports about that yet.
The reports have all said that the passengers were extremely well behaved and no one was seen leaving with their luggage. That's the Japanese for you.
Panic?? There was no panic. All passengers showed very high degree of cooperation with flight attendant's orders.
The fact that all of the people on board the A350 safely evacuated because if not, it would have been a major tragedy to the families of the crew and passengers. Condolences to the 5 dead.

@@isshiomi6364yh, but if the jal pilots saw that the runway was not clear, why did they not abort the landing? If the pilots couldn’t see the coast guard plane, then the atc should have seen that the runway was not clear and communicated that to the jal pilots.

The coastguard pilot didn’t remain in his holding position. That’s why JAL was cleared to land.

The runway is closed while digging through debris ? Two planes collided isnt that pretty obvious? The problem has to be with communication between aircraft and the tower. Clear the damn runway so aircraft can still land and take off. People picking up debris. Yea our conclusion is yes two planes collided. Duhh.
@jeffkerr7418, standard plane crash procedure is that the aircraft debris is not moved or interacted with in any way at first. This is so investigators can gather evidence and key data to aid in the investigation. In this case, it will be the position the plane stopped, where the first debris was located which indicates where the collision occurred, taking photos, etc. It essentially becomes a crime scene. Then, once everything is completed, they can move the debris and remove the CVR and FDR for analysis.
Thank God that the people all got off ok. How many years until the truth comes out?
