Woodturning - The Pencil Donut !!

It's been a while since I made anything with coloured pencils but thought it would be cool to use them to make a Donut /Torus .. I cast them in a slow set epoxy resin as the blank was too big for my pressure pot and I finished the piece with Danish Oil..

There’s something strangely satisfying watching dried resin flying around like the inside of a cotton candy machine. Your craftsmanship is not only fun to watch, but your pieces are unique creations.
Thank you 👍
@@AndyPhillipWoodturning how much epoxy do you go through in a year?
It kind of looks like there 100 spiders there.

i don't get why people are mad about the pencils being "wasted": they're not wasted at all! they're being used to make art, that's what they're for! just because it's a different kind of art than their intended use doesn't make it any less beautiful, imo
damn never thought gengar would be so inspirational
Yeah, i agree
The main use isn't it's only use.
I haven't seen a single comment of people getting mad about that..
Totally subjective.
The best part is how there’s no music or crazy intros. It’s a genuine video. Love it
i've watched exactly 3 of your videos now and i completely understand why wood turned products can be so expensive. the time invested is incredible!
Did I searched for this? No. Did I watch everything at 2 am? Hell yes I did.

Sir, we must have the same brain lengths if you were able to say exactly what i had in mind
I love how the pencil lead looks like doughnut sprinkles! Beautiful piece. Thank you ~
I'm always amazed how well you eyeball curves. Of course, you've had years of practice, but it still amazes me. Thank you for another great project. And thank you for more Silly String! 😁

The expression is "All walks of life". Stupid.
My little ones want to know how many colored pencils were used so badly. I just don't have the patience to count them all. Same thing goes with the globe. We love your videos!
I also didn't have the patience to count, but based on light counting and estimation... about 700-1000! Pretty big range so maybe someone more patient than me will actually count :)
honestly just seeing all the pencils perfectly aligned together in that hexagonal grid like that is pleasing in and of itself
👍
But it makes me question what's holding them together if the epoxy didn't get between them.
Sacred geometry
I finished a 2000 piece jigsaw puzzle during quarantine. This guy. Made this beautiful work of art. I'm less excited about my accomplishment now. Awesome.
I think that it's really quite cool. I suck at jigsaws

I think it's visual ASMR, it's satisfying to watch someone who's excellent at their craft create something. At least that's my hypothesis on why I watch stuff like this. :)
@@maplelump The ASMR made me fall asleep a week ago
So satisfying and relaxing to watch. Especially the detail of the last pencil going in to the bundle and the strands of resin coming off.
At first I was totally confused- then I was mesmerized- now I’m in awe of the talent of one man and a butt load of colored pencils.
Thank you for showing how this is done. My law partner had one of these mezmorizing things in his office as part of just cool & Crazy things to see. I have looked at it for 34 years wondering how cool it would be to see it made. After countless, hours of thinking stimulus I now know. It feels like reaching the top of a huge hike. Refreshing, and complete. You do grand work. Perhaps it is the next $60,000.00 crazy piece of art yet another office monkey will buy from you. Just simply incredible idea.
My dad's been doing woodturning since 2015 or so, and I have to say that this is the most impressive woodturning thing I have EVER seen on the internet.
I was captivated and mesmerized watching this! This is a wonderful work of art. Very creative! Thank you for sharing!

I love how you take time to show us even seemingly mundane parts of the process. No loud music, no flashy edits, just a man doing what he loves! And as usual, it was epic. The moment you dropped all those pencils, I knew it was going to be awesome!
Good thing he didn’t show all that resin drying. Would have been a 20 hour video.
When he pours the clear stuff on the pencils you can se the satisfaction of the colour changing
Carys Kendell epoxy resin is the clear stuff
yep that happens to any and all woods whenever you apply any type of sealer or protective layer. It brings out the true color of the wood. So beautiful.

Notice how the 6 sides of the pencils all fit perfectly together, like honeycombs. Hexagon has found to be the most efficient shape to maximise space-saving etc.
Yup, circles hold the most for their size, but hexagons don't leave any empty space when stacked together.

Everybody Needs a PENCIL DONUT
That reminds me of a quote that I must have dreamed. I can't find it anywhere. "I'm an inventor of sorts. I invent things people don't need - but, they sure would miss them if I hadn't invented them."
Look at the end product: The outter pencils (that get the most sheared off their sides) are, for the most part perfect. i.e. Evenly trimmed, to what must be mm, consistant depth (that is, even where the color part thins/thickens on the edge - we're talking prob less than a mm of variance). And this is done by hand. The care and detail in even the mundane tasks of centering the tools & piece are simply amazing.
@@dato1068 have u ever heard the word showpiece bro??? 🙄

I don't not what you saying, but cool😂😂😂😂
@Tom AcM Do you own, or ever used a lathe? Unless that wood lathe can auto center in a way that my Southbend and Monarch can only do with the six-jaw chuck and some luck (i.e. perfect w/o need for breaking out the dials), then trust me, user skill is a factor. That said, perhaps this was done off screen; still did a damn good job.
