  • Some people say he's laughing because he enjoys it, but uncontrollable laughter is actually a common reaction when in fear of death. I forgot which article I read about this, but when you can't do anything but watch in a terrible situation, you tend to laugh. That's why some people also start to laugh while or after crying, desperate states of mind trigger some kind of contrary reaction. Sorry for my English, it's not my mothertongue

  • For everyone's information, the tsunami wave that the Japanese ship rode through was the wave of 3.11 Great East Japan earthquake which had a magnitude of 9.0, the biggest earthquake ever recorded in Japan. Over 20000 people perished in this tsunami and fires that followed. Considering this significance, there's no doubt that this one gets number 1 on the list.

    • For professional sailors these waves are pretty common. That's why you hear people laughing and they are filming it. That's also why the title is "caught on camera". If sailors fear for their lifes, they won't take out a camera. (Actually that goes for anyone in any situation). Or they do, underestimating the situation, but the footage gets lost due to being on the bottom on the ocean. There are 40 meter waves out there that will sink almost any ship. (changed height from 100 to 40 meters)

      @hemelinger7792@hemelinger77923 жыл бұрын
    • @@hemelinger7792 the largest one ever recorded was 100 feet. that's 30 meters and that was after a major earthquake. the only times you'll see 100 meters is if an asteroid hits earth.

      @chrismccabe1795@chrismccabe17953 жыл бұрын
    • @@chrismccabe1795 you are right the number is wrong. It was most likely 100 feet, where I got the info, not meters. Changed it to 40 meters, which is the size it can reach according Wikipedia. Btw, Tsunami waves get higher when reaching the coast, but that were not the ones, I was writing about.

  • I love the feeling of being in a boat and feeling it being tossed around. Thank goodness I have never felt seasick. Forty years ago and more I remember being on the ferry to Ireland and my sister and I would run down the corridors being flung from side to side, and there would be sick washing around the public toilets but there was a sill that stopped it coming out into the corridors. When we were in our cabin we used to get tossed from side to side in our bunks and my Dad would put the plug in the sink to stop stuff gurgling up. I think the newer ferries are much bigger and more stable, and I probably would be scared now rather than exhilarated!

I have never been out at sea and I have no clue where these memories are coming from but they're surprisingly vivid and the feeling is peaceful and quiet but having unknown memories is spooky..

  • Video of those massive waves going over the top of a ship is something I got lucky enough to experience a board the West Star (404 foot long) cruise ship. Less than one day out the icebergs started to move haphazardly during our Seward to Vancouver cruise. With 90% of the ship seasick (weak tea and soda water was my diet), I spent hours in the cocktail lounge above the bridge while massive waves broke over the top of the ship. Calling it exciting is an understatement. When you’re in that type of situation, that’s when you learn just how powerful the ocean really is. Now I just wish I could do it all over again :-)

    • Modern ships are actually really safe, you can't sink your ship unless you manage to breach the hull, which is nigh impossible to do in the middle of the ocean during peaceful times. Ships are not made of the same metal as cars, they're very, VERY hardy. Plus, they stay afloat because the compartments beneath the deck that are filled with air and keep the ship above water are watertight, and you can't flood them easily. MORE OVER, most cargo ships have more than one compartment that are divided by watertight barriers, so even if one compartment floods, the ship will still stay afloat. These things are fascinating and way, way safer than cars.

    • Bukezee That beach is actually "Puerto Nuevo" in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico, USA. From time to time strong winds in the island generate big waves like that so it's normal. Beach is surrounded by a natural wall and water is crystal clear. That said, that's quite an old video so the rocks have changed shape over the years. I live close by
