  • Correction - the first Apple TV remote was made of aluminium and glass, not plastic.

    • @@PISCINAPARTYPAPI Technically the remote you’re referring to was never a “Siri” remote. It was simply called Apple Remote. There’s only been 3 generations of Siri Remote. The 1st Gen was like the remote in the video that had the white ring. The 1st Gen was updated to in order to *remove the ring, but it was still a 1st Gen. The 2nd Gen introduced the aluminium remote we are used to seeing now. The 3rd Gen is identical to the 2nd Gen, but the Lightning port was replaced with a USB-C port. *add

    • Yes, you are correct. There have been 4 gens of Apple TV remote. The first one in 2009 was all aluminum and had a replaceable non-rechargeable battery. The subsequent 3 generations in 2015, 2017 and 2021 were referenced as Siri remotes, and had BT as well as IR, with rechargeable batteries. There was an Apple Remote introduced in 2005 to support Front Row on iMacs and Mini that was all plastic, and could be used with early gens of Apple TV.@@PISCINAPARTYPAPI

Sometimes my pods auto connect, sometimes I get a message apple tv has detected them and sometimes apple tv ignores them and I have to connect via settings. In all cases I put in the pods before turning on my apple TV. If anyone knows how to ensure auto connect I would be very grateful.

  • Two additional tips: 1. With the current remote, clicking on the Right or Left arrows of the navigation ring will skip the content forward or backward. The amount it moves depends on the app. For instance, KZheadTV skips 15 seconds with each click. 2. Changing the Keyboard Layout (Settings -> General -> Keyboard Layout) from Linear to Grid makes it MUCH easier to navigate the on-screen keyboard to enter text.

    • I have a question about 1. so I currently have an apple tv with the new remote and going forward/backwards on KZhead videos doesn’t work as easily as it used to be on the previous remote anymore. Previously it was like you described but on the new one you always have to swipe up, then right/left and then hit OK instead of just clicking on the left/right side. Is there a setting you know of that fixes this?

    • @@MikeyBarca02 I have noticed the same thing. I have the original Siri remote. Prior to multiple updates skip back/skip forward would work easily every time but now sometimes all it does is just pause the video. • One feature you missed which is a must have for me is the Match Content option in the video settings. If that is on and your TV is compatible it streams video at the frame rate and resolution of the content, otherwise the Apple TV converts it to whatever your Apple TV is set to. If you have a mix of content, for example movies at 24 frames a second, UK and North American TV shows which have different frame rates everything streams without annoying jitters, which can be really obvious on panning shots for example. Many of the apps honour the setting too, so Netflix and Plex will match. The main exception is the KZhead app that resolutely converts everything to the overarching setting of the Apple TV.

  • Excellent and informative introduction to the Apple TV 4K. A couple of things that I particularly like about this steaming box that you didn’t mention is the scrolling feature to quickly and accurately fast forward or reverse on many of the apps. I also think the ability to switch quickly and easily between various different apps is another big benefit of the ATV4K box and provides much greater flexibility than using the built in apps on a smart tv or an Amazon fire stick for example where you have to completely exit one app before accessing another.

  • Thanks for the great video - as always your stuff is really informative -- even for a long time Apple-user like myself! One feature I LOVE is the ability to say out-loud "Hey Siri, turn off my TV" just before I fall asleep. Finding the remote always pulls me out of that blissful pre-slumber mode. (I have a HomePod nearby, but as long as all your devices are on the same wi-fi network, your iPhone or even Apple Watch will listen and "speak" to the AppleTV).. A feature I haven't seen which would be great is being able to use the Find My app to locate a missing remote. Often the remotes (especially the older smaller ones) end up hidden behind a pillow or under the sheets or someplace that takes a while to find. A little chirp or beep after speaking "Hey Siri, find my remote" would be awesome and very "Apple" centric.

  • 2 notes: 1. Using the iPhone as a controller lets you use the iPhone keyboard rather than the hunt-and-peck style for typing. This is useful for things like passwords. Of course, using the iPhone also gives you access to whatever password management software you use. 2. Making the Apple Photos app the first app on the Top Shelf gives you an initial screen that is an 'Up Next' style scroll of photo memories. I find this more pleasing than the choices available from the Apple TV app.

Netflix does, the AppleTV app does, etc etc. You can just hover over an app on the dock then above it will show pertinent details such as the TV app showing your up next list without having to go into the TV app itself.... Very useful to know and understand.

  • Great video! Very comprehensive and easy for beginners. I was probably underutilizing the Siri function before, will use that more. One suggestion to include, as some mentioned below, is settings in the “Video and Audio” section around SDR and HDR. These are important to understand and set properly to get a good experience, Apple actually makes things pretty easy in this area. Main issue is that most streaming content is a mishmash of SDR, HDR and Dolby Vision. Also most menus for streaming services are SDR. So forcing the video to Dolby 4K or HDR 4K on Apple TV always will cause SDR content and menus to look terrible and blown out in a lot of cases. General advice in most cases is to set the output on Apple TV to “4K SDR” and then turn on the “Match frame rate” and “match dynamic range” settings to on. This will allow SDR content, such as menus, to be displayed as intended and then auto switch to HDR or Dolby when these frames are detected.

  • I originally bought the Apple TV 4K box and a pair of the large HomePods to replace the TV speakers and replace the cumbersome audio amp and speakers setup. This also improved the audio quality significantly. This also cleaned up much of the cabling mess I had below my big screen TV.

  • This video is especially helpful for those who are new to technology and want to gain a better understanding. For individuals with prior experience in video technology, you may find that the content is intuitive and easily navigable, likely requiring less time to comprehend than the video's duration. While I personally had hoped to discover new insights, it appears that the video mainly covers familiar ground.

  • Hi. You didn’t mention Apple TV‘a role as a HomeKit hub, and how useful it is as a remote for lights, for instance. Also, you didn’t mention the AirPlay potential as a wireless screen to play iPhone/iPad content.

  • I have had Apple TV for some time but honestly have not used it. I'm now intrigued to use it. Do you know, if I sign up for Apple One which includes Apple Music, will it automatically cancel my other subscription or do I need to manually cancel my stand alone Apple Music subscription?

  • Hi This was a really helpful video and insight to Apple TV. One thing I remain puzzled about is how it enables switching between App services and watching live TV. I thought I’d seen somewhere that Apple TV now incorporates a live TV programme guide - is this right? K

  • I installed my Apple TV yesterday and I found your video this morning. I found most of what you mentioned, but as my iPhone was already updated to IOS17 and the Apple TV was still on IOS16, I did have a couple of small problems with the installation. However, I was able to complete the installation with the Apple TV talking to my Apple Watch. When installation was complete, I updated to IOS 17. I could then install the Apple TV app on my phone. A surprise for me was, I could install my current VPN on the Apple TV.

  • Great app in the UK 'TV Launcher' that combines all of the live tv/on-demand apps in one place so you can get a tv guide, now & next etc and then launches the relevant app right into the content for you.

  • This was amazing thank you. I think you need to edit the video and add the number one reason for the Apple TV. Airplay! This feature known by very few people to share photos and to mirror the iphone was the only reason I bought the device prior to smart tvs adding it to the core features. You should show old people how they can see the iphone and ipad emails photos etc in large format on screen mirrored. We use it to plan family vacation from the couch on google earth etc. Thanks again.

OMGoodness, I have a lot to learn and your video gives this 70-something gives me a bit more courage to use ONLY Apple TV vs. the apps loaded in the LG tv monitor. Cheers plus review how to add new apps like Netflix and Paramount + too.
