  • Grabbing the Apple TV 4K was a game changer for me. While LG's WebOS is decent for the most part, I keep running into some random bug where I would randomly lose the sound for no reason at all. None of the diagnostics or troubleshooting that LG recommended helped. The only fix was resetting the TV (LG C2 42inch) back to factory settings but even then the same issue would happen again in a few days. A $1000+ TV shouldn't come with bugs like this and after a few months I got fed up and grabbed the Apple TV 4K. It was quite abit of money but well worth the price of admission. Zero bugs, smooth UI, able to use my AirPods 3 and AirPods Max for private listening and finally syncing with a pair of HomePod 2s through eARC for the best minimalist Dolby Atmos set-up (no noticeable lag even during PS5 and Xbox Series X gameplay). One of Apple's most underrated products IMO. That said, will you be doing a long term review of the Google Nest Wifi Pro? Thinking of upgrading to one of those to replace my aging Google Wifi mesh set=-up.

  • Having been the IT person for my past job and having to support all of the conference rooms and TVs I have found that Most "Smart" TVs are pretty dumb. They are exactly as you have noted her, but they also really stink at managing peripherals (AppleTVs, Roku Boxes, and other external sources). They would randomly disconnect and be forgotten and the auto-detect and setup for them are horrible. Huge sources like AppleTVs would just never auto-setup with their software. Basic users are hosed by them. We have a couple AppleTVs at home and we love them. Frictionless and easy to use when you want to do anything on them. Great video.

  • Just came across your channel and was pleasantly surprised with the production quality. The snappy montage of B-roll must have been tedious to capture and time-consuming to edit, but it certainly makes for a much more pleasurable experience than a 10-minute-long talking head video. • Granted, all of my TVs are still good old “dumb” TVs (I’m running my Panasonic plasmas until they die), but even if I were in the market for a brand new TV today, I would either try to find a non-smart TV, or if that isn’t an option, I’d buy the TV with the best reviewed picture quality and disable all the smart features. The data mining and ads make them a nonstarter, and I’ve never seen a built in smart TV OS that is as fluid and feature packed as Apple TV. All of the points you made are spot on, the high quality of the OS combined with the deep integration with other Apple products make this by far the best way to get content. Even if you don’t use an iPhone it’s still one of the best streaming boxes available.

It integrates Apple music and video purchases seamlessly and provides a bit more functionality vs Apple on a Android based OS. When they moved away from iTunes to TV and Music apps, there were some issues accessing my Apple library, but support is just a text or phone call away.

Now I have 2, with relatively new tvs because the experience of use is just so so much better. With this I am confident I am getting the best performance out of my television. AppleTV has it quirks, it seems to hate my Vizio soundbar but otherwise I wouldn’t go back unless this product was discontinued.

  • I am very much still a media pc type of person. (Not that d+ or prime video gives you good quality on a pc) But mpv is such a powerful media player, add in shaders, upscaleing, and many other advanced settings. (Like dynamic tone mapping for hdr) Atv is more locked down than even ios and is just a huge hassle for me to work with. But it does have some very useful features like audio format shifting and a atmos decoder? (Mac can decode atmos to high channel pcm but mabye not atv) I guess the airpod features are cool if your in the apple ecosystem but I am extremely sensitive to audio latency and Bluetooth dosen't really cut it. (Although you can delay it out and that's mostly fine for media consumption that isn't live.) The whole home media space is a mess. Expessaly now that audio is expected to be carried over hdmi. Hq audio and vrr at the same time is very expensive to get now. Cec is still mostly a mess. Modern displays all seem to have earc now but a few years ago high end displays only had arc causing more configuration issues. Streaming services 4k distribution only comes in locked ways with weird requirements that causes signal processing to essentially be a no go and most things that work or are the distribution formats are stuck behind licenses. Like hdmi 2.1 essentially being broken on Linux because of the licensing changes from the hdmi standard.

  • The one thing to think about using external smart box is that TV processing features might not work on them. For example Sony XR clear or new Alpha 11 LG G4 OLED might only do some of it's processing on internal apps in their Smart OS. Not sure how much of a thing that is, just that it has been shown at times that things can look different between an AppleTv or Shield vs internal smart TV processing.

  • In addition to this accurate review, it was the picture quality that was a really pleasant surprise. It's dramatically better. That's not hyperbole in my experience. The most obvious signs of artifacting and low throughput are the black to gray levels. It's been decades since I haven't seen some sort of black level banding, pretty much with all of the digital non OTA signals, cable, satelite, or internet based. Unless you've seen enough film or analog, you might not even realize that the picture isn't supposed to be banded like that. This was really the 1st time I fealt like I was getting the full use of the gorgeous 4k OLED screen outside of physical discs or an OTA sports broadcast.

  • Kyle, thank you for creating this fantastic video! It’s refreshing to see someone finally addressing TV OS issues. Personally, I own an LG OLED TV for my entertainment room, a Sony TV for the family room, and a Samsung TV for my master bedroom. I completely agree with your observation that each TV OS can be clunky when it comes to usability. Additionally, streaming directly via the TV isn’t as smooth as using the Apple TV App. The picture quality on Apple TV is noticeably better, especially considering that I still have two Apple TV 4K devices from 2017. I often recommend Apple TV to my friends, and I even gifted one to my friend’s father. He’s extremely satisfied, especially when streaming catch-up TV. For streaming, I rely heavily on my Apple TV and keep other TV OS interfaces clean for live TV viewing. Regarding network connectivity, I’ve meticulously Cat6 cabled my house, with separate cables for the master bedroom and entertainment room. Each point has its own router in a mesh network, and my Apple TV in the entertainment room is connected via an Ethernet cable. I believe this setup significantly enhances the streaming experience.

  • I agree! I also have the Apple 4k tv (first iteration) and i'm waiting to see if they release a new one after WWDC. If not i might pick one up. It just runs so much smoother and now, with my new tv, having all the newest features would be nice. Especially 120Hz. Since my 75" Samsung tv goes up to 144Hz. Would be nice if Apple could support that.

  • My biggest issue with at least LG’s WebOS on the C2, is that if I want to check something while streaming through for example the Netflix app, I go to a HDMI-input and then want to go back to the Netflix app, it has to reload the entire thing. So no multitasking at all basically. It should at least be able to keep one app in memory when you are switching to HDMI-inputs, but nope. So yeah, Apple TV ftw. Not to mention issues with HDR/DV if you have Plex. Infuse on ATV is just flawless here.

  • Kudos on the overview. I’ll test to see how things look when I actually get a smart tv this summer. I’ve been running my pre smart era Sony XBR 8 for 15 years and the IC boards are starting to give out. I’ve only used the TV as a dumb display anyway as my audio gets sent to the receiver which does the 5.1.1 decoding and amplification and routing. Most of my tv watching was TiVo cable recordings with an equally of TiVo. The TV is always a display device only. Time to upgrade. The new Sonys for 2024 run Android so I’ll see what they have installed in them. I’ve been tuning the AppleTV 4K first generation and had the AppleTV Gen 1 before that, so I’m familiar with that system. It has its bugs - the podcast app just cannot seem to reliably launch a video podcast playback as of late , occasionally looses its rss back end and just will not put in the quick access the video podcast I watch most. Oh and the phone to search sky entry has become a disaster in KZhead , but that could be a KZhead app issue. One it the big all Apple problems beyond the crap podcast app, is the janky remote with Apple doing its weird thing of swipes and long presses. I use a programmable remote to replace ALL of my other remotes and drive everything that way and by macros. But that’s all based on the established IR remote paradigm of a button puts out a burst of codes IR light per press. This means ffwd/rew and long press to delete or move things isn’t possible on the Home Theater Remote , but hey that’s why I keep the Apple Remote in the drawer or the phone nearby. If there are any ads in the tv’s own interface then that’s that and I’ll never use it again. Period. No compromise there. For live tv I have my TiVo with cable guide (as shit as that Program guide still is , an American problem ). So I don’t really have a use case that needs me to use the TVs app ecosystem. It’s just a duplicate of what I already have hooked up via my AVR. In the slowness issue , having expedited what Apple did to my ipad2, I think for tvs the same applies. If your tv works and has the features you want - do NOT upgrade the firmware. Leave it alone and turn off auto updates. Because computers run the old software just as fast 10 years on as the day they were new. But the new software constantly expects the hardware improvements. That is critical for Apple devices whet you cannot go back to prior versions. For TVs if you can preserve software on a USB stick and downgrade at will then testing new versioned isn’t bad, just be prepared to go back.

This has been a big reason why I have never used Apple devices. I mean it's great for your basic apps like hulu, netflix, disney +, but how about 3rd party apps? Thanks. I use the buzz box and love it because it is android and has NO BLOATWARE and extremely fast.

  • Kyle.. You know this is a little déjà vu here. I just purchased three hisense TVs. 2 U7's 65 inch and a U8 at 75. The built-in application system, which is Google TV has so many bugs and so many issues that I reset the TVs and stripped out, the Google systems. I have five Apple TVs, one for each set in my home. I am so glad to see someone else with the same issues with TVs and their built-in app systems. When I first loaded the TVs, I went ahead and allowed Google to run and I had nothing but problems. For instance, Google would not load Amazon prime, just froze. Now I have the TV programmed where they go to HDMI 1 at power on where my Apple TV's are located. Anyway I just wanted to make sure that you knew that you were not alone with these TV operating systems. Thanks for the video.

Also, I have an iTunes server running on my NAS, and it’s nice to be able to play my music collection right on my home theater system. Also, the remote is able to control the volume on my 10+ year old receiver. It’s just an awesome product.

  • Couple of comments. Walmart recently purchase Vizio so we can expect to see ads on those TV’s soon. One big feature of the Apple TV 4K is the ability to pair to multiple remote devices like headsets. That means more than 1 person can be listening to the TV over their headset - and different model headset - at the same time.

  • Kyle (or anyone). I have a 2022 65" Sony Bravia OLED running GoogleTV. I'm soooo on the fence about this next question, I'm hopeful I can put it to rest once and for all. Here goes ... I'm torn between the TVs native OS and my AppleTV 4K (3rd Gen) when it comes to picture quality. I see endless debates on how one is better than the other. I have the TVs Google OS set to APPS ONLY, so I don't "see" advertisements. And so, can you and or anyone who's familiar with this shed light on my dilemma once and for all. Is native better (picture wise) than the ATV? Please omit the Apple ecosystem features, I don't use them. I just want the very best picture/sound. BTW, sound wise I'm connected to a Sennheiser soundbar and SVS sub. Please, any insight, advice on this will help and will be humbly appreciated. Thanks all in advance. 😊
