  • Rublev to me, is the product of Tiger Parents/unreasonable expectations. As a former college player who grew up playing with high-level junior players that could've gone pro I've seen this playout. Had a teammate in high school who actually attended one of those IMG/Evert/Nadal-type tennis boarding school academies and they came back home after a short struggle with mental health. It's a bittersweet realization to have that maybe your dream (being a pro tennis player) is someone else's burden or nightmare...

  • I think he's one of the few "temperamental" players which 99% of the fans like, and that says a lot about him. I find it easy to empathize with him, and I believe anyone who's gone through depression, imposter syndrome or similar self-perception issues might as well

    • I am one of that 1%. I hate his tantrums and raging style on court. It is bordering on arrogance (I can't make mistakes). I also think there is a huge double standard, fans hate on Tsitsipas, Shelton, Rune but adore Rublev. To me Rublev seems like someone who could be triggered at home for some minor thing and would commit a crime of passion. It is my opinion based on his behaviour and style/attitude on tennis court.

      @Stu49583@Stu4958315 күн бұрын
    • @@Stu49583 I thing the biggest differenciator is that Rublev never comes as arrogant, and arrogance is one of the most divisive traits for most fans. Rublev always apologizes for his tantrums and is respecful when he's sound, while other players often "own them" and make it part of their public persona. As the video says, Rublev's tantrums are always out of frustration with himself, never with the opponent. All I said doesn't justify or diminish his childlike behavior and mental shortcomings, but there's a reason most fans root for him and want him to get better. Rune is starting to improve a little bit in that regard and focus on his tennis, and Tsitsipas seems to be sort of maturing now, but Shelton has this type of personality when he acts like part of the big 3 without the results to back him up

  • I think that a penalty during a match for self harm (including verbal harm) would make matters worse. However, some kind of post-tournament penalty along the lines of required counselling could be helpful, depending on what the ATP could come up with. Watching Andrey melt down for me is far, far worse than the classic tantrums of McEnroe or Kyrgios, or the constant umpire abuse that a lot of players exhibit. The latter is unpleasant, but I don't worry for the player (I just don't like them). With Rublev as many have said, I always love him, but fear for his health.

    • Kyrgios had exactly the same background as Rublev - amazing junior results, huge expectations, prodigious pressure, terrible perfectionism and anger at himself for even losing a single point that he should have won. Depression and injury. The media destroyed him as they are not destroying Rublev. Kyrgios is also known as one of the kindest and gentlest people around off court. The ATP used him over and over until he was 26 because he wouldn't say no and they exhausted him.

    • Consiidering the Grand Slam tournaments all threatened Osaka with disqualification for trying to avoid press conferences to avoid anxiety you get a pretty good idea of how much tennis cares about its players. Even after Serena's meltdown against Osaka in her first US Open win you saw her talking to reporters shortly afterwards. Players are timed for their bathroom breaks during 5 hour matches in 36 degree heat. The money in tennis can be great but players live inside a moving fishbowl along with their failures. Most of these players look at any loss as a failure and out of 32 players only 1 gets to raise the trophy.

He said that it’s the Soviet style of growing big champions by cruel, aggressive and intimidating training, but he didn’t talk about himself and definitely didn’t say anything about beating. There’s some truth in his words, you can look up how Russian coaches (gymnastics, ice scating, volleyball) destroy sportsmen, but he is top-10 in world tennis, he is a $ millionaire, maybe it worth it?

  • He may need a sport psychologist, but mainly he needs a psychologist pure and simple. A psychologist with the stated mission to make him a better tennis player will run the risk of making matters even worse, since the main objective, and thus focus - explicitly or, if not, at least implicitly, is achievement, not well-being as such.

  • I'm a psychologist and your insights were pretty good. That exact moment when he's "undercover" struck me aswell. It seems all around he's struggling to be somebody who is equally loveable by both himself as others. On court he sets an immense bar (but who doesn't; they're professionals). The fact is that his behavior gets him in trouble sometimes. From my point of view he could benefit from changing his core beliefs about himself/others (cognitive therapy). Identify those and at least he knows what he's dealing with: the ghosts of his past. He is already succesfull in tennis, but somehow I get the feeling he'd rather has a succesfull character.

    • Rublev CANNOT beat someone like Alcaraz, Sinner or Ruud on clay right now. He really needs a Dimitrov, Khachanov or Struff to slay the favorites for him in order to have any chance to win the tournament. He overstresses thinking he could win by just hitting harder against those types of players. That's why guys like Ruud are so chill in defeat, they know their limitations, and just go home and work harder on them. Andrey doesn't do that, he really thinks playing the same way ALWAYS will suffice to win championships and that his mental breakdowns are the ONLY thing holding him back. It is a limitation, yes, but his tennis is his biggest limitation, the moment he recognizes that he will be more at ease with himself.

However I don't think he believes that his mental breakdowns are what are keeping from winning big, otherwise surely he would spend way more time on the mental side of things instead of training. I think he's just too impatient with himself, so he'll dwell on every mistakes he makes like bad calls or not converting a break point. The outbursts are just a result of this impatience.

  • The fact that the tennis commentators and fans are able to talk freely and empathise and look for solutions for Rublev now shows just how far you have all come in the last ten years since Kyrgios showed exactly the same issues under stress. He has been a ground breaker in highlighting what lies behind Rublev's behaviour. For himself, Instead of showing concern and empathy he was fined, suspended and banned for months, for much less. Banned for three months after arguing with an umpire at Shanghai. Fined $110,000 for smashing racquets and calling Fergus a 't...' when given a time violation. Taken to the cleaners for underarm serves. Called a clown for tweeners. Kyrgios is obviously very concerned that the same does not happen to Rublev and has offered to fly from anywhere in the world to talk to him. The ATP must not do to Rublev and Rune what it did to Kyrgios and Tomic. You have never shown any care for him in your videos. Yet every reason behind Rublev's issues is present in Kyrgios's life. Except colour. And being Australian.

    • The clip was selected so that you would have this negative reaction. this video maker has an armful of clips which use Kyrgios to make a point but neglect to put in the rest of the extract which includes his enormous concern for Rublev and his offer to do anything to help so that he doesn't end up self-harming and self-hating like he did as a result of media and fan scrutiny.

  • I couldn't get why a lot of tennis fans value the so-called "stoic" so much in tennis more than in other sports, we are all humans and humans have emotions. Ofc some players are very stoic and seldom express their emotions, but we should be seeing them as a "rare occurrence." c'mon man if you didn't do well on a test or work even if you spend a lot of time or money, will you be happy about it and just say nvm?

  • Rublev's fine. It's time we talk about the whacked ATP tour schedule and how players are getting frequent injuries. Also, please talk about ATP and WTA's policy of mandatory tournaments -- imposing penalties on top players if they don't play the Masters 1000. It's becoming problematic. Rybakina just talked about it in her presser. Tsitsipas talked about it last year when he was playing with injury.

  • 9:30 It was a joke, mate, simple as, don't make something out of it. He definitely needs some help in the mental area, I think he has the talent to break off that QF curse. Once he does that, he'll calm down a bit. He just gets angry way too easily. Medvedev also gets angry but Rublev just bursts even at 40-0 if he loses a point. Limited or not, he's beaten Federer, Nadal and Djokovic, not something many players can brag about. He is capable of better but at the moment there are many highly competitive players on tour.

  • I think he needs to learn self control. He needs to accept reality the way it is. It seems the biggest problem with him. Maybe he has some trauma from childhood which has a bad influence on his game on court, but it's possible to separate both things. Rublev seems like a really cool guy. I'd like to have a few glasses of whiskey with him and talk about life. I like his aggression in his game but he definitely needs to work on his self control and not to allow negative emotions to break his performance.
