Large and in Charge the Viking Queen pushing 4 loads and 38 empties northbound Mississippi river passing Bee Tree County Park. I could not resist flying into the smoke lol. Recorded from the deck at Bee Tree Park. I hope you all enjoy!
I was piloting The Vessel when this video was shot. She still has a little throttle left, was not hooked up. Stepped out of wheelhouse and waved at 3:01. Crew was in the middle of painting. All signs and logos were off as a result. Great Video. Good Job Bowzer.
@Jeff C 10500 HP

Must take a lot of skill to steer clear of collisions!
I grew up on the Upper Mississippi river, my dad worked for the Corps of Engineers as a lockman at Genoa lock and Dam #8, then was promoted and transfered to Trempeleau lock and Dam #6 as an assistant lockmaster, back then the lockmaster and family and assistant lockmaster and family lived in 2 identacle houses on site. As a kid in the 50s and 60s, I played all around the Dam, unlike now, we weren't allowed to cross the Dam but we did occasionally with parent. It was an adventurous childhood!
I used to freelance deckhand out of the NMU hall in Joliet in the late '70s. I used to love going out to the head of the tow (t's quiet) and watch the riverbank slowly pass by. Great job
My mother was the cook on this tug for about 10 years. My uncle was Rusty Barrilleaux. Pretty cool!
The power of this boat make the earth turn a rond 😊 I’m born in the wrong county Great vid and greetings from the Dutch
Greetings! And thank you.
Normally when a video isn't doing or saying much I move on. There is something so majestic about this tugboat working I just let it play to the end.
Agreed 👍
You’re exactly right bud, I feel you!! Just watching that tug slowly but surely push ALL those damn barges along is amazing to watch. Really makes me marvel at the sheer power of these tow/tug boats that do this!!
You took the words right out of my mouth. Funny thing is great minds think alike. Cheers!
This is a way bigger boat than we normally see on the Red River here in Louisiana. Awesome shots. You are a damn good Drone Pilot.
I agree 👍
It's cool this found me. I just started flying over Tugboats and barges on the Arkansas River Mini 4. Great videos! Keep it up!
Very cool video! One of our favorite camping spots is Trail of Tears State Park on the Missouri side of the river just north of Cape Girardeau. The camp ground sits right on the river bluff so my favorite thing to do is sit and watch the barge traffic and trains go by! BNSF runs coal trains about 100yards from the campground too. Makes for a noisy weekend, but the sound of revved up 4000hp diesels is music to my ears!!
Awesome footage. These pilots make it look so easy.
Your drone video perspectives are phenomenal. This vessel has a lot of power. Just look as the propeller wash and thrust against the river. Thanks for sharing.
She is a 10,500 HP towboat
@@kevinstone9638 Burning over a ton of diesel per hour.
Nice boat. Seems like it is smoking a lot. I have been around many large engines and the never seemed to smoke that much. If that's normal for this type of engine, then I'll bet his EGT is near red line. Clearly those engines are working hard, and that's what they should be doing, working hard. Nice video!
Awesome photography. Thank you, beautiful vid. We’re from Missouri, grew up on the Mississippi in St. Louis
that must be a ridiculous amount of force to push an object that large against the current of the Ol' Miss, nice drone shots :)
What beautiful Towboat thanks for sharing Bowzer I always enjoy.. thanks again
just found your channel and find the big rivers fascinating... hope we get some water this year
Love these videos, I live in St. Louis, and love watching these boats go up and down the Mississipi River.
Absolutely amazing
Jefferson city here . I'm starting a job next week on a boat 😊

I filled in on the Viking Queen a couple of times back in the early 80's when Wisconsin Barge Line was still the owner. And 1 time after ADM bought them out.It was differant being on a bigger Dravo boat after being on smaller St.Louis Ship boats for years. My regular assigned boat was the Sierra Dawn.I was the mate on it for 8 years.
I tripped on the dawn once with you I was a regular on the spirit and then marinare
Looks like someone (chief) needs to run the over head.clean air cleaners
That boats sitting in my harbor right now sierra dawn
The engines seem to be a full power and then some with that black smoke. I was on a ocean going tug and full power we just had a brown haze. We had 4-12 cylinder super charged diesel engines and 4 electric drive motors. Great video.😁
Excellent video. Bravo.
She’s pushing hard Captain. The exhaust stacks show she’s digging in and getting it done. Your drone work is awesome……this is much more captivating than watching a push thru the pilot house windshield. Thanks for posting.
They're all empties, she better have something left, lol
Great footage; keep up the good work
A flying DeLorean! When this baby hits 88mph, you're gonna see some serious sh*t! Another great video Bowzer. Loved it. Have yourself a very nice day sir. You deserve it!!!
Wait a minute. What's a DeLorean?
Wonderful videography , I couldn't pull away !!!! John
Looks like them EMDs are working! Love the sound of their turbos
I am impressed on how well the cellphone picks up the sound from up on that overlook deck in the park. Thanks for watching!
@Jeff C I quess there lower sounds overpassed all other sounds, so you can't hear turbos so well
@@jannejohansson3383 I believe higher pitched sounds attenuate faster through a medium like air or water.
95% of time no turbos except on Cats. EMD's have superchargers
@@stevennewman8276 it’s actually both on one engine. It can be belt driven and then exhaust driven but depends on the engine model. Some just have turbos/superchargers or both depending on the use. For marine it might be both?
Impressive, such lovely smoke too 😀
Love watching these boats, wish I was out there, I did do some commercial fishing out of Dutch Harbor for a short time, to old now but I sure miss the boats.
I would love to see the engine room on this big girl. Wow. What a power house.
My two favorite river jobs were working in the Memphis harbor doing fleetwork & working for Economy Boat Store refueling & resupplying passing towboats.
Notice how clean tug is, Great housekeeping and I bet they have top notch PM program. Michigan
Absolutely
I would love to see a tour of this boat . Very impressive.
Amazing video, thanks!
She’s pushing hard captain 💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾
I see those barges way up north here in St. Paul, MN. Its awesome to see them up close.
I can smell the HP!
Thankyou you are good at this , enjoyed
You're very welcome glad you enjoyed!
Push boat pushing hard getting that work in, impressive boat man!
Great video! Love the drone footage. 👍🏻🎥💯
Thank you 🙌
@@BowzerTowboats you’re welcome
That’s unbelievable and the power it must have, how do they tie them together and where would they start from? I’m in Australia and have never seen anything like that, great video and the captain must be a legend.
Wow , your video footage is good but the subject you picked makes it even more so ! That is a lot to haul , especially up river ! Try doing that with batteries . Lol
judging by the smoke, id bet you can feel the vibrations thru your body in the engine room when those diesel's are under high load.
Thanks for this fantastic video. Greetings from Amsterdam
Thank you so much!
Just Amazing
Loaded those barges could carry about 63000 tons at the 1500/barge maximum. Almost as much as some of the 1000 footer ships on the great lakes. Some of those go over 80000 tons.
Man, that engine room must be deafening!!
Just discovered your channel What app or website do you use to identify what boats are on the Mississippi river? We are at Tom Sawyer’s rv resort West Memphis. Thanks Jerry
She’s cranked up
Imagine being in the engine room with three 3500 hp diesels in almost full power! Those things are shoving hard.
That speeding boat could have been my old Allison bass boat that would run around 90 mph, it had a 265 HP Evinrude Super Stock engine on a boat rated for a 115HP. You knew that you were in grave danger wide open.
I love how the quick-water rushes out from under that transom when they're pushing hard
Propeller Wash
What name brand of drone are you using ? Nice video!
It's hard to imagine the skill required to manage that massive barge in a river with many bridges and shifting depth.
Exactly
One of the blessings the united states has is so many navigable waterways.
Early June 2021 you should have filmed the American Heritage pushing 56 loaded from Wickliffe to Memphis picked up more, pushed 64 to Kenner!
Beautiful pusher. What engines does it have? EMD 710?
Ran Mate on there a few times one my favorite crews and boats I've ever rode on in my almost 21 years on the river
Is the towboat a 8400 Hp?
Shes a clean machine Bowzer, good video, as ussual! Its really stirring up that water. Ever figure out what was going 90mph in begining of video?
No but I figured it could have been an amphibious aircraft I have seen a few along the river I just never saw one here. Thanks!
I ask you green deck hands have you finely found those 5 gallons of wheel wash. It took a whole first day on the job before the Capt. finally told me. ( Green deck hand joke). I loved it. I e be en pranked new deck hands. Big laugh.🤪wuz up.
We enjoy flashing the river boats at night from the river banks with not only our high powered flashlights but our trucks with light bars just to mess with them. We always hope they’ll shine us with their big light lol!!! What do y’all think of people like us? 😂
That’s one huge boat.
Yes it is. Thanks!
Curious: Do you get as north or farther north than Clinton, Iowa/Lock and Dam 13?
This big triple screw is really pushing hard upstream, the black smoke indicates metal to the pedal. Great job as usual Bowzer and keep um coming.
They got bad fuel or need to change the fuel filters...
Daniel R I was thinking the same, bad fuel.
Poor valve timing,,,, bad fuel,,,, or burning a little waste oil lol. RETIRED EMD CHIEF ENGINEER.
Damn I wanted to hear those EMD diesel engines screamin
I wish I could get a microphone closer.
I guess it's like a sailboat. Long hrs of bordom, interuped by short sperts of TERRIOR.
Towboat muito poderoso incrível muitas barcaças ea inda consegui correr nossa este vídeo foi perfeito Bowzer gosto de ver towboat com muitas barcaças amei
Muito obrigado. Fico feliz que você tenha gostado!
I delivered planes from Europe to the USA. We’d arrive in Maine and fly them to Texas. On the clear days I could clearly see these huge barges on the river. Wow
Dam that thing is putting some power down
Awesome !111

No stupid music…..👍👍👍
WHERE'S THEBRAKE PEDAL ?????? THANX A BUNCH. GREAT VIDS
I routinely kayak the Missouri River from KC to STL and I’ve always wondered two things: is there any place online I can go to see real time barge operations? You can’t really tell from the footage but those things really churn up the water. Makes for a pretty bumpy ride for about a mile down river. Other question is whether their radar can pick up returns as small as a kayaker at night? I always run with USCG approved bow and stern lights, but they can’t look much more than little red, green and white points of light at night. Every time I get within 500-600 yards of one of these operations at night, it seems like they instantly know where I’m at and shine their trillion candlepower spotlight on me lol, which I’m very grateful for. They have to have a pretty fine radar on board that can pick up a paddler in a 15’ kayak.
Yes the radars on a towboat when adjusted properly will pick up targets smaller than a navigation buoy. It's great that you use lights. It's also important to when possible stay out of the navigational channels. Towboat this size probably drafts 12 or 13 feet restricting the ability to run in less than 15 to 18 feet of water.
Depends on what we have in tow if we have cover tops it will create a sort of blind spot on our radar out about 200-300ft infront of tow he’s thing I can recommend is use your nav lights stay out of channel as much as possible and carry a handheld radio! Always keep it on traffic an you will hear all boats calling north/soutbound and Remember always make sure they know where your at it takes a while to pump the brakes to these especially they have a full tow! Safe travels to you friend
лучше не рисковать , и держаться дальше
If possible, you might want to rig a radar reflector to increase the target that they see. It's easier for you to get out of their way but you might not have time.
@@jacoborcutt3032 That blind spot is 900' out in front of empty tows.
Nice display of Diesel power, what is your fuel capacity and how many gallons do you burn per hour hammer down like that ?
I can't imagine, my boat is half this size and we push three barges at the most and burn about 1,100 gallons of diesel a day with 3,000 hp. Our fuel capacity is 21,000 gallons. Would be interesting to know the specs for this vessel.
I Like watching the barges go thru the lockanddam does anybody know what the website is for them
TopDiesel.. witch type propulsion is used?
Full Barges up river and Empties Down River. Canal Barge Lines and Watson Towing, Worked the Mississippi, the Arkansas, and the Atchafiley Rivers
That port side engine sure smokes more than the others.
EMD 💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾
you should film this going thru the locks see how many times it gets broken down
They don't they just leave all those empties at St. Louis Harbor which is south of the locks then turn around with loads and head south.
Wonder if you can Water Ski behind that propulsion pushing out...back
I was a deck hand for national marine fron April 1990 to 1994. I've never seen 42 in tow. This is awesome. I enjoyed being a deck hand. After my 3rd. I worked with 3 different CAPTAINS AND GOT WHEEL TIME FRON EACH ONE . I PILOTED THE MOBILE RIVER FROM THE CITY OF MOBILE TO BERRY STEAM PLANT TO DEMOPOLIS ALABAMA. ALSO GOT TIME FROM MOBILE TO PASCAGOULA MISS. EVEN PILOTED TO THE DOCKS OF PENSACOLA FLA. I TELL YOU IF YOU MID 20 Y.O.s COULD EXPERIENCE DECKING MAN YOU WOULD FALL IN LOVE WITH DECKING. THE MONEY IS AWSOME. TRY IT OUT GUYS .

How many horsepower does it have?
How many miles to the gallon.? Do you ever come up the ohio to pittsburgh? We see quite a few tugs up here. Not ad big as you.
You mean, how many gallons to the mile?
That is really amazing to me now
Good looking boat, what’s the horsepower ? Unfortunately it’s smoking like a old lady and would never be allowed to sail like this in Europe.
12,000 hp V16-710 EMD 3 engine s rare to see black smoke or any smoke when there hooked up all you see is a clear haze
Cool!
I love that you can share with us all the towboat videos
Seems to.me the engineer needs to change the air cleaning filters!
tha got tha foe-barrel wide open on them big block chevys, dam she’s workin hard
Hey! What app are you using brother!?!
I use boat beacon with an AIS receiver and antenna. I do not rely on cell phone signal and not up to date information. I can receive out as far as 20 miles depending on terrain.
@@BowzerTowboats OK, I thought it was something similar to /better than "find ship". I'm a pilot on mv Scott stegbauer. Thanks
Emd power?
Curious to know the fuel burn rate at that throttle setting and current.
This boat burns over ten thousand five hundred gallons of fuel per day when it is run at full throttle. The estimates for fuel burn used to be one gallon of fuel per horsepower per day, but some of the newer boats seem to burn more. Topping off the fuel tanks with diesel usually costs over two hundred thousand dollars.
How much does one of these boats make a month/year
Круто смотрится! Мощный толкач!
I wonder what the fuel burn rate is.
How much Horse power and Dwt barge?
Must have been filmed when they were painting the boat. No company emblem or boat name showing.
Yes and you can see the name boards laying on the deck behind the smoke stacks.
I understand that the power comes from the same model of Diesel engine as railway locomotives, one for each stack. Are the propellers direct drive or Diesel-electric? Does the tow use compressed air for anything? "4 loads and 38 empties" is the kind of phrase oft repeated by railroaders. Seems running a tow is like operating a train, except in two dimensions instead of one, and on a road that wants to push you sideways where you don't want to go sideways.
Direct drive on this boat. I believe the new Z Drives are diesel electric. Yes compressed air is used.
@Jeff C That makes sense.
@@BowzerTowboats I am not an expert on Diesel engines, but the ones used sound a lot like EMD two-strokes. I would guess 4,000 horses for each.
