I Bought a Jeep CJ7 Project! Lets Bring this Classic Back!!!
I added a new Jeep to our collection! A 1983 Jeep CJ7!
I bought this jeep from Bens Uncle a little over 4 years ago, and it sat in North Carolina for a few years until we were able to go pick it up and bring it back to Oklahoma where it sat in a buddies field for another 2 years... Its time to bring it to its permanent home and pull it in the shop.
The CJ is a classic jeep, and it will always been an iconic model. Its simple, rugged, reliable, and overall a staple of what Jeep really is.
Before we dive too deep into this project, we need to make sure we can get it running and driving. After all, it has been sitting for years...

Multam calm gndesc stiu bun❤❤❤❤❤❤
This is going to be a fun one 🤙🏻.
2 1/2 cans of starter fluid is a great way to kill a motor as it has no lubricant. Use a bottle of gas mixed with 2stroke oil to prime a vehicle that has sat for prolonged time. It will fill the carb bowl and supply some lubricant to the cylinders and rings
I was cringing when they were spraying that full stream in the carb.
Smart, never considered that
There’s always one in crowd
No larger than 35” tires. Keep those classic Dukes of Hazzard wheels & install BF Goodrich KM2 in a 33x12.5x15. Same ones the Rubicons used to come factory with.
Hell yeah, make this into a Daisy Duke jeep!
I Love the CJ build project. My first big build and project was my 1986 CJ-7 that I fully restored when I was still in High school and I still have it today.
I miss my CJ-7 so much. I will be watching this build.
Thank you for bringing a classic back to life!
My pleasure!😆

There is nothing more iconic than a CJ Jeep. I love my CJ8.
I went with my dad in the late 70s when I was a kid and bought a new CJ7. It's a fantastic memory and why I'm a Jeep guy today (Gladiator) The CJ7 only came with the driver's seat, and you had to buy the passenger and back seat separately along with the soft top. I shifted gears for him when I rode up front. So much fun.
Why do I love the old school, “does it run?” and “fix the little things as you go” type of videos? Thank you both. I enjoy the banter and the trouble shooting. Can’t wait to come along for the ride.
Now that's what I like and want. A Lady who has the same passion for Jeep's as I have. Great watching your video for the first time all the way from the Land Downunder, Australia. I will surely be following your re-build project to see what the final outcome will be. Thank's again and cheers from the Land of OZ.
Nice, going to be a blast. I fix up XJ’s and this CJ is awesome!🇺🇸
Good luck with the CJ7 you two🙂
Thanks! Lots of work to do, but the LJ isn’t going anywhere 😎
Hey Okies also a fellow Okie. Love when she said a Braums getter 🤣🤣🤣 can’t wait to see the finish product. Good luck yall!!!
Yeah welcome to Oklahoma and welcome to the good side of the river 🤣🤣🤣
The best thing about CJ-7s is how SIMPLE they are!!! No computers, no emissions.
Yes, they're the last of the real Jeeps..
This just isn't true. An 83 CJ7 has an ECM controlling the Carter BBD as well as numerous emissions components.
Finally someone else with a Cj-7! I’m about done with mine now and started using it! Excited to see what you guys do with this one!
Tip. When using starting fluid, alternate between starting fluid and WD-40. Starting fluid washes oil out of the cylinders WD keeps them lubricated. Helps prevent scoring of the walls.
I had a CJ5. Hated the day that I sold it.
Great story. I love these Jeeps. Good luck on this project. I had a ‘73 CJ5. How I miss that one.
I had a '73 CJ5 too. And before that I had a '67 CJ5. I'm an OLD jeep guy. Haven't owned one for many years and am lost when it comes to the modern models available.
@@toddb930 I now have a 2019 Cherokee KL Trailhawk. It’s been to Moab and Kanab. Handled trails well as long as it wasn’t real technical. A lot more comfortable than that CJ5, plus it has AC. Way too old for the punishment.
I had a 79 CJ7 and LOVED it! 304 V8 Giddy-up. My first vehicle. Have fun with this restoration, I'm excited for you.
Love this build already! Good luck with the CJ7 you two!
Glad you're back. I had a 79 CJ 7 golden eagle with a 304. It was the best jeep ever. Can't wait to see your build on this one.
Engine sounds sweet
It's so much cleaner than anything we can find up our way. Looking forward to following this build.
Nice to see you back making jeep videos. Really liked the LS swapped TJ and how Ben and yourself explained the details. I went on a rabbit hole researching LS's 5.3. 6.0 etc.. thank to your build. Can't wait to see what you guys do with this CJ.
Glad to see you are posting again. This should be a fun project.
I have a 1983 Cj 7 totally cherry ! I will probably never sell it !!! I am a Jeep guy and have been all my life !!!
I have an 80 CJ7 great rig, I strongly suggest doing the MORE Shackle reversal on it, makes it so much nicer to drive on the road!
Plan on doing this! 😊
I want a Cj 7 for my next project. Love that you are doing a Cj. Keep it simple, clean it up, fix the body, check out the frame, axles , freshen the bushings etc, get some 33s or 34s and drive it!
I need that top for my 80 CJ7. Mine has a 304 and 4 speed manual. Needs some work, leaky rear axle seals, brakes, convert the motorcraft ignition to HEI, and the gas tank leaks. Luckily you can build these out of a catalog. I also have a 360 and 401 sitting on pallets.
Can't wait for this build.
You guys already have a few big-time off roaders. Keep the cj on 35's or smaller and make it perfect for cruise nights or cars and coffee. There's already too many "rock crawlers" on KZhead. Keep it simple, just make it super clean.
nice CJ7, i need to get working on mine again. I also just bought a 76 DJ5 for the collection, I love the old ones.
Saweet can't wait to watch doing a cj7 is on my bucket list after I finish my 67 commando.
Love CJ-7s I hope y’all do a lot to it to make it even better!
Nice CJ 🇺🇸0lllllll0🇺🇸
Woohoo! A CJ! I’m excited about this one for sure!
Bout time. Love the CJs miss all mine
Looks like a great CJ to start with!
Hi Ben and Cassie, congrats about saving the life of this CJ7. My first Jeep was a CJ7 with a tiny Renault diesel engine 60hp. But it was funny to drive it. I'm so excited and can't wait to see your next videos !! Herve from France.
Glad to see you back on the new project 👍🏽
Excited for the build!
Love this build already! Would like to see all the lights inside and out converted to LED, maybe do a Rustoleum paint job, Greta idea keeping the leaf springs, lowish buck resto
This should be a fun project. Looking forward to it.
I love the front and rear Warn bumpers!
We have a 86 Cj7 Laredo, California no rust. It's a work in progress
If you want to remove the screens from the headlights, you can cut them out using dike's or wire cutters to remove the screens, of course you still can use the rings to secure the headlights from falling off.
CJ 7's are awesome.. Would love one
Nice to see You back.
Looks like my old Blue 82 CJ…but I converted it to a 92 Mopar electric FI. A fun project. I miss ‘ol Blue.
I’m pretty excited about this project!
Glad you’re back! Stoked for the cj
I am here for this build!
This is going to be an exciting build. I’m ready for the next video!!!!
Last time we rode with you guys at Crossbar ( been awhile….Ben was driving the LJ up Screen Door ) I was thinking he said you guys were maybe wanting to change TQ converter in LJ…???…..I may have that completely wrong…..Nice ride though….Gonna be super awesome as usual coming out of y’all’s shop.
Great memory! Needed a high stall tq converter for the LJ. We ordered one and it should be here in the next few days. Once that is in we will be taking it to cross bar to test it! Have the stock te right now and it pretty much drives through the brakes😬
Agreed!!!
Love seeing Cassie again! Great project, keep us informed 👍 🫡 🇺🇸
A cool tri-color Renegade paint scheme would be sweet to go get Ice cream in.
My first jeep was a new 1976 CJ7. The ttotal price was $5005! I put a doug thorley.header onit, a clifford research intake manifold a turbo mjffler, jacobs wiring aand a dual point distributor and then a 550 cfm holley carburetor. It had a 258 cubic inch six cylinder. It came with 7 layer leaf springs. It was a good jeep, had lots of milesbut in a moment of silliness sold it and bought a truck. Should have mept it, it ran like a hot rod, and got an average of ten miles per gallon
So glad ur back! Love ur videos!
I just started the video, and this is actually the first jeep/jk gear and gadgets video ive seen in a while. Im definitely excited to see someone from the youtube offroad scene getting into older stuff with older tech. I used to have a 2012 jk and sold it for an 87 YJ. I got sick of the modern tech and electrical on new stuff. Ive got it 350 swapped with k30 kingpin 60s, and im swapping the th350 for a 700r4 and building an np241/208 doubler in about 2 weeks. I want to say I 100% wouldnt give up on carb and leafs. Aside from just liking being contrary, my holley truck avenger carb performs up to 90% of the angles that efi does, and leafs can be made to flex just as well as any "non-professional" grade coil set up, while being simpler to maintain and a 2° set of sliders
I have a 77 CJ7 that I daily drive. It was a barn find, I slowly restored every system and upgraded evertying I could to make a fun family criuser. I recently got a brown spice soft top and I've been taking the top off all the time now days. I love this Jeep. Keep up the good work on your CJ7, I can't wait to see it back on the road. I would skip on the light and grille guard, especially since you don't like it.
I love my 85 CJ-7 If you do put 35s on it I would upgrade the steering box bracket. The stock one is pressed steel and 2 separate plates at that and are know to cause lots of problems when they start falling apart from bigger tires putting more strain on it even on road. I know this from first hand experience and it happened while I was doing light wheeling with my jeep with 35s.
Heck Yeah!! Welcome to the CJs👍🏼🏁🏁🏁
❤❤ awesome can't wait for more content ❤❤ Do a spring over !!!! keeping it classy kasie !!!
This is fantastic. I'm hooked.
Yeap, Christine and I have been working on stuff together and I too have yelled the famous “turn it off, turn it off!” 😂😂
I had a 84 CJ7 Renegade , bought it new for 11 grand out the door Canadian. Best vehicle I ever owned
3inch and 33s. Are perfect on CJ's
Braums!! Heck yes
cj7 simpleness durable a looker and just great jeep going to be watching this hoooo yeah🤩🤩🤩🤪😜💯💯
i'm realy love you guys working together,
I love ❤️ jeeps.as u can see .
Have a different level of affection with CJs!!
I liked that old Willys where you picked up the Jeep.
Love those wheels
Hell 👏 YEAH! 👏 Let’s go wheel some old CJs around!
Can’t wait to see how this turns out!! Hey - it can be Grammy’s new Jeep (for when I visit) 😉
i like to go with a reverse shackle kit when keeping the leaf springs, then long soft springs. my scrambler with leafs rides as well or better than my gladiator fwiw
Lookging forward to seeing this build. My vote would be to put a AMC 304 OR 360 under the hood.
Leaf springs! Lets go!
Enjoy it and drive it
I don't know if they still sell it, but I had a Weber carb conversion on my 81 CJ7 (My first Jeep). It ran SO much better than the junk Carter carb that was on it stock.
No fuel in the tank is a good thing. Fresh fuel is much better than old fuel.
Great video
simple buiild with 35's and make it the family sunday cruiser with mild off roading. make it so the whole family can enjoy it
Do your thang young lady
It’s been a while since I’ve seen your post. Keep posting and I enjoy your content.
CJ7 when a Jeep was a Jeep
I remember when Ben thought the 2-door JK was gonna be a simple build. 😂
Nice to see a classic being rescued! I was distracted by that Willy Wagon in the background though! Congrats. Enjoy the resto. The only (as far as i can tell) 82 Cherokee in the UK is on my driveway, waiting for me to win the lottery and afford the restoration. I'd suggest checking the oil. When my fuel pump stopped working, on my AMC 360, it was because the diaphragm in the pump had failed. So the pump was dumping gas into the sump! And yes, i'm going to point it out too... "I Bought a Jeep CJ7 Wrangler!" A CJ7, absolutely. A Wrangler? NotSoMuch
I had a 83 Cj-7 i bought new and daily drove it for probably 12 years that carburetor if it’s factory will not idle after a year or two, i used to rebuild it every year and a half then it was good to go. Or just replace it with a Webber
Holly Sniper is a great mod and keeps it more reliable.
Thats what we are thinking for down the road!
Thumb nail really got me!
GR8 CJ7, Congratulations, 258 six is a GR8 engine 😊 New subscriber, go gal go😊
Love to find a good 5 or 7 for my soon to be 16 year old son.
Finally the cj !!!!!!!
I have 3 jeep tj's and one is for rides to the beach and ice cream rides. nothing wrong with ice cream rides
Take the fuel cap offshore the pressure from the air hose can get out
Keep the head light / tail light screen. I like them. They are so old school. Probably a Pep Boys special.
Was this a popular add on for the CJs?! I decided to keep the headlight screens. I mighttttt paint and put the running/tail light screens and put them back on.
De-burr the winch (drum, fair lead)before using synthetic line.
